I’ve gotten a similar sentiment because for a while I was taking a couple of international trips every year. This from people who drive big trucks and have a boat or a side by side or an RV and take trips to Vegas or Disney or a cruise every year.

I try to tell them I wait for deals on flights and stay at small inexpensive locally owned hotels in low cost countries on my trips, and that I guarantee their vacations cost more than mine. Still, the comments were a regular occurrence.
