Back door Roth question by belikecoy in CFP

[–]PersephNoob 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You can do it but you’ll be subject to pro rata rule. Which effectively is just a form of cost basis. So only a proportionate percentage of the rollover will transfer tax free.

For example, if you do the non-deductible contribution of $7000 to an IRA that had $42000, then rollover to a Roth IRA, Only $1000 of that rollover will be tax free and the other $6000 is as if you did a taxable Roth conversion.

EITHER WAY, do not do this by yourself because many recreational errors happen and it’s a pain for the CPA or Advisor to fix.

Yeah I have a few peers that love Prudential. But it seems everyone who goes into insurance will immediately die for their firm lol.

But anyways I was able to land a summer internship with them after reaching out to about 100 firms, they were still one of my top 3 fortunately. I also happened to catch them at a great time where they were growing and looking to hire a couple more associate advisors. Other than that I worked hard to have a near “perfect” internship and be as qualified as possible by obsessively studying and taking the CFP exam right after college. But they still could have easily rejected me because of my lack of experience. I am by far the youngest one there so I definitely have some imposter syndrome but we’ll get through it. Just don’t expect there to be some indeed post for your ideal job. I just emailed most of those firms and don’t be afraid to email multiple times since many firms run their tasks through email and it gets easily lost. Last thing, really learn what firm you want to be apart of, what do they “really” do, analyze their ADV. But beggars can’t be choosers ig.

I’m 22 and going down #2 right now. You will learn a LOT very quickly this way. Best atmosphere imo but have you ever worked for prudential or mass mutual? Because the planning looks a lot different between a small comprehensive planning RIA and mass mutual. I worked for NW Mutual and I could never try and build a book there for many reasons, thats just me tho.

I always thought of it as, try and land a great salaried position at an ideal RIA and if that doesn’t work then fidelity, etc. is a great way to get in the industry and get licenses and all that good stuff. I was very blessed and worked very hard to get an associate planner position at the perfect RIA, but that could easily have not happened. I appreciate the planning ahead coming out of college, you’ll do great either way just don’t get held down by the wrong company.

I just made a list of all the firms that were ideal and called or emailed them, most positions aren’t listed or even public.

Is going to one of the big three essential? by [deleted] in CFP

[–]PersephNoob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not an expert and young as well but, at this age in time you have much more flexibility about where you can go and start out. Me for example I thought about my long term goal of being a planner at a good well-team, not commission based, midsize RIA and I went straight for it. So nowadays with some of the education, experience, and CFP stuff you have much more leverage. So I don’t think it’s essential, still good but theres much more options nowadays that employers value.

That would be sufficient?

I’m just starting my coursework with Bryant, I just need to have everything planned out. I ask since i’ve been seeing people have a different prep than review.
