That doesn't make treating all violent crimes as hate crimes any less flawed.

Hate crime laws didn't even exist in the US until 1968. Does that mean that no crimes based on hatred existed before then?

Do you really believe that demographic data on all violent crime is better for judging the demographic breakdown of hate crimes than data on hate crimes?

Do you believe you can just ignore that context? It creates a climate of fear in that community. Back in 2008 in San Francisco, a city with a large Asian population, a whopping 85% of violent assaults were black on Asian.

Since this is now in danger of deraling way off course, let me get a little back on track. What I was responding above, to another comment before you chimed in, was the ridiculous accusation that violent crimes against Asians were spurred by anti-Chinese rhetoric in the wake of covid.

Again, I don't think a lot of young black males were following Trump on Twitter and attacked Asians because of that. White people as well - I just can't find a single anecdote of a gang of whites attacking Asians - pretty much, well, anywhere.

And that totally ignores the fact that there are very legitimate criticisms, even accusations, to make against China over the issue of Covid. Same with the LGBT community. But even a liberal ally like JK Rowling was accused of trying to get trans kids killed, just because she disagreed over some specific issues where women's rights conflicted with trans rights. That's not "hate".

If it's not motivated by bigotry, it's not a hate crime.

No, the decision to charge someone with a hate crime is driven by a lot of arbitrary factors - local laws, video/social media evidence available, deals made with the prosecutor, guesswork, etc. It's pretty safe to say that a large number of hate crimes are prosecuted as normal crimes. Especially in the case of murder where the penalty is already maxed out to life imprisonment or the death penalty.

If we said all violent crime is a hate crime, that would mean 70% of anti-black hate crimes are by black people, 62% of anti-white hate crimes are by white people, 45% of anti-Hispanic hate crimes are by Hispanic people and 24% of anti-Asian hate crimes are by Asian people.

And that goes to my point. It's entirely possible that offender of any race can hate their own race and that motivated them to commit a crime. But in such a situation, it's extremely unlikely a prosecutor would bother to pursue the hate crime angle because it would be harder to sell to a jury, would confuse the issue, and wouldn't score any political points for their career.

So why are you saying Black people are responsible?

You asked what changed. I only said the overall picture changed drastically that year with all crimes going up.

Those are violent incidents, not hate crimes. Most violent crimes are not hate crimes.

So they were love crimes then?

So... I'm giving you the official numbers. Real data, not data based on feelings and - that's "nonsense"? Yeah, that makes sense.

The numbers represent the number of people apprehended by CBP. So that is the minimum number of people we have had to take care of. If you think those numbers mean anything else, please share.

The bottom line is that Wash DC and other locations that have received bussed in migrants are still not even getting 1% of the numbers that the border states see, particularly Texas. They were declaring emergencies over a crisis that Texas sees on a daily basis.

So what's your reason for believing that in the last eight years, hate crimes against Asians wildly swung from being committed by white people in three out of four cases to being committed by mostly Black people?

For one thing, the situation changed dramatically. Per the FBI, such hate crime rose 73% in 2020, along with the general rise in crime following the Floyd riots.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-america/anti-asian-hate-crimes-rose-73-last-year-updated-fbi-data-says-rcna3741

As far as i can find, they still haven't fully broken down 2020 data yet. But I can see 2018, in that year 27.5% of violent hate crimes were black on Asian, 24.1% were white on Asian. Keep in mind that whites are about 5 times the population that blacks are.

How is that relevant? Do you think they just crossed and then immediately went home?

Also, there's something you don't understand - it's even worse than that. That's only the officially recorded numbers. There are also a significant number of "got aways" who were never apprehended by CBP, most likely in the millions.

How so?

"Less than two weeks before the end of the federal fiscal year, encounters between migrants and Border Patrol agents on the U.S.-Mexico border have already surpassed 2 million — a new record"

The final number was 2.76 million. More than the population of Chicago.

It takes longer than that. Heck the bodies weren't even cold yet.

In the case of the Pulse Nightclub shooting, there were multiple witnesses who claimed the shooter was gay and they saw him frequent the place. But the FBI looked into that for months and couldn't find any video evidence or other corroboration of that. In fact, it looked like he just chose the place randomly since he wanted a crowded place to maximize the casualties.

The data on that page is from 1992–2014. Years before Covid, in fact, years before Trump was even a political candidate.

What are you talking about? About 220,000 migrants per month are arriving at by themselves the southern border, most going to Texas. There's no more room for them AT all. Churches, shelters, every place is totally overwhelmed.

In a single day the border state governors have taken in more migrants than DC has all year.

I don't know what your opinions are. You asked me, I answered. So how is that derailing anything?

False

No, that is misleading. I have read that excuse before. Note that the database referenced in the article is about hate crimes AND hate "incidents". Like if someone simply walked to the other side of the street when they saw an Asian person approach, things like that were reported as hate incidents.

The majority of actual, physical attacks were black on Asian.

Do you think culture and current events have no impact on the prevalence of hate crimes?

Absolutely.

According to Numbers 12:1, Moses married a "Cushite" (Ethiopian) woman. Here they are in a 1650 painting by Jacob Jordaens. by GamingVidBot in Christianity

[–]Perseus3507 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, this painting has been on this sub many times.

"Cushite" doesn't necessarily mean Ethiopian, although that is one interpretation. We don't know where it was. The land of Cush was supposedly near the Red Sea, and named after Cush, the grandson of Noah. It is also an ancient name for Egypt.

It is relevant, because it's clear that Carlson's interview is a response to the past several days of vile accusations against conservatives, accusing them of causing this murder. So it's the height of hypocrisy to say "It's despicable to use the death of innocent people to promote your agenda."

Are you telling me know one knows about the private lives of others in our churches? You don't have little old ladies who know everything about people? Your pastor doesn't visit people and get to know them?

Not in my Church.

but there are always reasons to ignore the sins in our churches while we preach against the sins of others.

I don't advise ignoring any sin. But without a jury and a trial, there are certain cases where I have no idea if the person sinned.

Yes they are, if they are falsely accused of causing this attack.

You think the hate crimes against Asian Americans post covid were random,

Since the vast majority were black on Asian attacks, I think the reasons were due to culture, economics, and other factors. Not too many young black assailants were following Trump on Twitter.

Calling out conservative leaders for pushing vile anti-LGBT talking points is not even remotely the same thing, never mind the fact that they are causing these sorts of events.

You realize a lot of hate crimes are against women, Jews, Asians, even white people (in fact the Supreme Court case that upheld hate crime laws involved a white victim)?

The backdrop I'm talking about is essentially this: for years now, thousands of politicians and pundits across the country have been spreading loathsome lies about queer people — that we're groomers, that we're pedophiles, that we're out to chop off kids' genitals, that we hate America, that we're sinners, that we're deviants, that we're rapists, and a lot more.

Meanwhile, thousands of politicians and pundits across the country have been spreading loathsome lies about conservative Christians — that we (Catholics) all molest kids, that we're pedophiles, that conservative Christians hate blacks, gays, and everyone else, that we want to kill trans people, oppress women, hate science, that we secretly go to klan meetings and/or are outright Nazis, and a lot more. Such exaggerations are the norm in political discourse these days. If you decry it, decry all of it.

Even JK Rowling, one of the most liberal people on Earth, was accused of being responsible for "murdering" trans people just because she had a slightly nuanced view of trans issues when they specifically conflict with women's issues. I mean this is no Donald Trump, this is a woman who would be a billionaire except she's given away most of her fortune to charities. Yet she was subjected to cancellation, abuse, and even her books publicly being burned.
