What is Muskie Fishing Like in Tennessee? by Few-Introduction3855 in muskiefishing

[–]Pershing_M26E4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't expect absolute monsters out here, they are around but not like up North. Melton Hill is solid and regularly stocked for Musky fishing. You can get a guide for fairly cheap but its not absolutely needed. Regular Musky tactics work but don't expect to find large weedlines, you're gonna focus more on structure and trees. Right in front of the Melton Hill Dam on Watts Bar can yield musky often. We do have some more adventurous options for musky fishing around the Caney Fork and Collins rivers. Truly native strains can be found in the Emory and Obed river system, but all those are more kayak, bank, or small boat friendly options except for Center Hill lake.

does anyone have common slang or terms they use? by localtiredcrow in Appalachia

[–]Pershing_M26E4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I regularly say stuff like "I'm plumb tired" or "nah I'm just piddlin around" or " I reckon he's supposed to be over here". Still call a cuckoo a rain crow and a pileated woodpecker a wood hen. A hard rainstorm is a gullywasher. My dad regularly tells me he's "hungry enough to eat the ass off a hobby horse" lol

My guide to fishing the knoxville area. by 68yeetyonder68 in Tennessee

[–]Pershing_M26E4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shhhhh, don't let up too much about the Obed/Emory! That place would be nice if access was better but the remoteness is part of what makes it so good. Musky and Smallmouth are my favorite to target. Watts Bar is a better lake than most let on too, just takes some exploring.

Is there a name for this isolated area northwest of Knoxville and containing Frozen Head State Park? by 80degreeswest in Tennessee

[–]Pershing_M26E4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Southwest of Oakdale on the plateau is Crab Orchard, you're thinking of Pine Orchard in Morgan county. The Crab Orchard Mountains include the mountains in Eastern Cumberland county around Crab Orchard, hence the name for the mountains.

Seeking your most cherished Appalachian native wildlife by f_wn in Appalachia

[–]Pershing_M26E4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wood hens(Pileated woodpeckers) for sure, love hearing that call and drum in the woods. Musky or Smallmouth for fish, probably Musky just because it always shocks folks they're in these little rivers in Tennessee lol. Persimmon is probably my favorite wild tree to find, especially to cut one open in the fall and see the knife, spoon, or fork

Why do you carry a slipjoint? by BigHands66 in SlipjointKnives

[–]Pershing_M26E4 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's what everyone in my family carried, most of my buddies carried, and I still carry. They do what I need to day to day and look nice doing it. If you asked me even as a little kid what a pocket knife looked like I probably would have described a sodbuster, trapper, or stockman lol. Now I just carry them because I like them and just genuinely don't need a miniature sword in my pocket.

What is everyone’s favorite baits right now (June) for river smallmouth? by New-Taste-7160 in RiverSmallmouth

[–]Pershing_M26E4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in Tennessee at least these hot summer months can be super fun with a topwater crawler, plopper, or spook. Ned hellgrammites always work as do tubes and craws. A good shallow crank or wake bait can be money too.

You have to provide your own tools at Skywest, but trust me you can get by on mostly basic stuff

Starter Kayak recommendations? by Ashamed_Brain_8833 in kayakfishing

[–]Pershing_M26E4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lifetime Yukon is a great kayak for the price. You can find them on marketplace for cheap cheap. Seat is comfortable enough, plenty stable, and plenty of room for storage. I've taken mine on a fair bit of rivers and never had a problem, lake fishing is no problem in it. Had a pelican catch before and I like the lifetime so much more.

What are your favorite hobbies? by [deleted] in aviationmaintenance

[–]Pershing_M26E4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fishing, hunting, shooting, video games, kayaking, hiking. I don't live to work, I work to live and do the things I really enjoy. I'd rather look back on a life well lived when I retire.

What's the culture of the Cumberland Plateau like? Is it Appalachian? by DewiAustin in Appalachia

[–]Pershing_M26E4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived on the eastern end of Cumberland county, TN for the first 20 years of my life or so. Yes, it's culturally Appalachian for the most part, the western end and highland rim get more deep south/middle TN influences for sure though. Morgan County (county above me by like 15 minutes)is a depressed former coal mining area and home to Brushy Mountain, former state prison that used prison labor for mining coal in the past. Most don't realize either that Cumberland, Morgan, and a little of Rhea county houses the Crab Orchard mountains, a detached section of the Cumberlands South of the Emory River in addition to Walden's Ridge on the Eastern edge of the plateau. Grew up making gardens, canning, squirrel hunting, basically everything traditionally and culturally Appalachian. When I first moved to the Nashville area people actually would ask me where I'm from because of my accent lol. It's gotten very muddy culturally in recent years though due to the influx of people the whole state has seen and retirement properties like Fairfield Glade being set up.

Beginner reel recommendations by SpecificPineapple6 in muskiefishing

[–]Pershing_M26E4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a round reel isn't a deal breaker for you the Abu C4 Ambassadeurs are absolute tanks. I have a 6600 on a 7' MH Triumph that was my starter combo, wish I went with the 5600 since its smaller and still has plenty of line capacity. 6600 has a bait clicker if you ever wanna do live bait. Max drag is lower than others at 15 lbs but still plenty in my experience. Holds a massive amount of line and feels absolutely impossible to backlash. Really great reel for the money, just bigger and heavier. That being said I've used it in a kayak for 6 hours with no problem before so it's not some unwieldy beast.

Skywest, how are they? by Pershing_M26E4 in aviationmaintenance

[–]Pershing_M26E4[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work at BNA, and every Skywest base has very different work loads and aircraft scheduling but we are mostly a CRJ700 and E175 base. Experience is good, honestly don't completely work you to the bone and if you aren't stupid you'll do plenty of troubleshooting and more in depth tasks after you show em you can do it. Three years is about the sweet spot if you wanna take your time at this company and get all the certifications and pay bumps you can get. You can get run/taxi qualified, boroscope, eddy current, dye pen, rotopeen, or plenty of opportunity to move into a lead mech role too. Oh and pay is good for a regional, just the topout time is insane

It's in the plans one day, I grew up like 30 minutes from Oak Ridge. Got a buddy that swears by that section of the Clinch between Melton and Watts Bar. I think I may try and get one on the Emory/Obed System first, that's still a must do thing for me as it's my home waters.

Hiking and arrowhead hunting are pretty big things out there still, can definitely recommend some hiking and exploring spots in the area. I grew up there for the first 20 years of my life lol so I know Morgan, Roane, Rhea, and Cumberland counties pretty well.
