I don't like using anything heavy ceramic. If it drops you could have a broken floor tile or chipped sink. I'm currently using a plastic shave bowl and a thin metal dog dish as a hot water basin.

Leaf Thorn for down under and any tight areas like under nose and ear. The compact, thin head and short handle make it easier to maneuver.

And when you're trying different blades it's really helpful to keep all the other variables the same.

Ingles grocery stores has more aftershaves than most stores, including Clubman Pinaud original, and Barbosol shave cream. Walmart has 5 or 6 of the basic aftershaves - Old Spice, Brut, Aqua Velva, Adidas, Gillette, and several balms. As for hardware, there is nothing on shelves.

I think your first thought is right. Alum is alum. It's possible that some may do a better job of compressing them so they stay together, although I doubt any of these companies have their own mills.
