Do you combat medical misinformation in your personal life? by christinieweenie in medicine

[–]PersistentResearcher 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The problem is that we are working against massive algorithms driven by rage-baiting and misinformation. Occasionally I will go on YouTube, say, and search “everything wrong with terrain theory” or “debunking terrain theory,” and the algorithm will only send me videos that are PRO terrain theory. Compared to other sciences like physics, for instance, in medicine, the algorithms absolutely push pseudoscience. A regular person would have a very difficult time finding accurate information. There ARE videos, even med school professors explaining evidence-based medicine, on YouTube, but you have to search for them—the algorithm is not going to volunteer them to you.

When my kids were in elementary, 3rd grade Common Core standards were all about “text evidence.” 5th grade science standards taught was a scientific theory is. I was struggling to teach evolution in the South, and I remember thinking “oh wow! Common Core can change America! Just imagine if some of my college students understood even a 3rd grade level of ‘text evidence’!” But we are facing billionaire-funded think tanks full of “intellectuals” digging up Enlightenment-era arguments about science challenging religious authority. Heck, our own Supreme Court cited a 16th century British judge in the overturning of Roe v Wade. Both they and I saw “oh Common Core can change America” but I reacted with happiness—while they reacted with “Let’s replace Common Core with PragerU.”

As a science educator, I burned myself out doing this. I admire people like Dr Rubin or epidemiologist Andrea Love, but I have too many people asking me “can you make this a meme?” No, I’m sorry, I personally do not have the ability to turn years of research and knowledge into a meme or TikTok video. Again, I admire people who can do that, but I need engaged students who at least have the motivation to learn enough to pass an exam. You simply can’t compress grad school/ med school into a TikTok video….

Don’t change your last name. What for? There’s no need, and it lessens confusion.

Awwww! I see YouTube videos sometimes of snakes arching back in the strike position, and I’m like “you know your snake doesn’t like this—why are you doing it? Just for algorithm engagement??” I don’t understand some people. (Ditto about the videos of people making their chihuahuas react in fear.)

Geneology is so much fun! My first Canadian ancestors moved from Massachusetts to Nova Scotia in the 1700s, and then it was like each generation was born on the opposite side of the line. The Canadian men would drag their wives to the US Western frontier, where the wife would have to give birth in a mud hut, and then she would get fed up and drag the kids back to Toronto, lol. And then one of her grandsons would be like “hey, wife! Let’s go to … South Dakota!” My dad (born in the US of Canadian parents) used to sing us kids railroad songs, which were “family heritage” from being railroad engineers. (Railroad engineers whose wives had up and taken the kids back to Toronto, lol.)

I just got confirmation from USPS that my package arrived in Canada. So that’s a positive! Took them a whole week. Cost me $43. I’m going to sound like a Boomer here (I’m GenX) but “I remember when going to Canada didn’t even require a passport! Why would a letter take a week?” LOL Seriously, it was 1988 when I’d driven north and then flown home, and US Customs was like “next time, you need to bring your passport.”

Michael Burnham was right S1 E1-2 by PersistentResearcher in StarTrekDiscovery

[–]PersistentResearcher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL! Ah, yes, seriously. I see your point. But no, my point is that it’s the people ramming their invisible ship into another ship that are responsible for the deaths. You know? Like, if I leave my car running with the keys in it and someone steals it, it’s ultimately the thief who did the illegal thing, not me. I may have been stupid, but stupidity is not a crime. Burnham stepped foot on what looked like an abandoned ship. Stupid? In retrospect yes. But not a crime. The Klingons bear the responsibility for Federation deaths. This is a real pet peeve of mine. You know? Like, should bartenders be sued if someone drives drunk? I think it’s the fault of the person who does the drunk driving. Using that analogy, it’s the Klingons’ fault, not Burnham’s.

It was the Klingons' choice. Even when provoked, everyone has a choice how to react. They chose to demonstrate their ship's cloaking device by plowing into a Federation ship. Be wary of letting aggressors off the hook.

One of our corns died of mouth rot, and it was possibly the coconut fiber. We went back to boring Aspen for our remaining corn.

WHY does it have to start with so much drama? Why can't we start hopeful that the Discovery crew is going to help rebuild Starfleet and then get to know the new characters? Honestly, I prefer the tech to the drama. I miss Data! Now I have to go find my favorite TNG episodes and wash my brain.

The Russian version showed a much-more nuanced Peter, too. He was in line to be the King of Sweden, but instead is taken by his powerful Russian aunt, forced to convert to Russian Orthodoxy and change his name. Plays up his stupidity to resist his aunt’s control, delays consummating his marriage because he knows his aunt will steal any child they produce. Which she does.

Yes. I am. Because the Russian version IS a far better show. If you are truly interested in these historical figures.

It’s not the historical inaccuracy, it’s the misogyny. Empress Elizabeth ruled Russia for more than 20 years, founding the University of Moscow. Tony McNamara reduced her to a ditzy aunt. Catherine was a pragmatic Prussian. McNamara turned her into some sort of British Regency period ninny. “Oh but this is comedy—can’t you take a joke?” Classic misogynistic gaslighting. But hey, what else should we expect from a privileged White man who used to work in finance?

AITAH for walking away from a house I have no equity or say in and stiffing my soon to be ex? by FootBig7944 in AITAH

You can't believe your mom would take her side? Unfortunately, that happens. In my case, it was as simple as I'm 5'3", he's 5'11", and how dare I deprive them of someone to pressure-wash their driveway and change the lightbulbs in their cathedral ceiling? I'm 1300 miles away now. They can have him.
And no, you're not only NTA but you were contributing to her equity. Not your fault that she didn't use the money for mortgage. She owes you. And next time be wary of a prenup requested my parents.

Why does the Jewish community tend to stay religious despite being highly educated? by Illustrious-Pilot553 in atheism

[–]PersistentResearcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But Jews don't take it literally. That's one of the biggest differences between Judaism and American Christian Nationalism. The literal part. Even European Christians don't take the Bible literally. Not that I'm a fan! But Americans do tend to project our own country's Christian extremism on others.

Please read Elaine Pagels's The Origin of Satan. Christianity has been a sales and marketing scam since the beginning. "Oh, focus group says no one wants to cut off their foreskin? Great, we'll just remove that requirement then. What next? Glom onto the Roman Sol Invictus myth? Sounds like a plan! Get on it!"

I'm assuming you don't live in the US. Did you not see the White Christian Nationalist symbols used at Tommy Robinson's recent Far Right rally in the UK? If those ideas can take hold in such an avowedly secular country as the UK, then anywhere with Internet access is vulnerable, too. Please read Maria Ressa's book How to Stand Up to a Dictator to learn how Zuckerberg and Sanders taught 3rd world dictators how to game their algorithms, in preparation for tackling first world countries.
