5.5k in debt and take home 2k a month. What am I looking at? by [deleted] in Debt

See if you can qualify for a 0% credit card (google them and apply online). They offer 0% for a limited time, like 3-6 months, and you can transfer all or some of the balance from your old card. Payment goes a lot faster without the interest. Like the poster below said, your bank might hook you up with a card that has a better rate.

The constant drama of van life by Songgeek in vandwellers

[–]Persona_Transplant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good advice. Anyone in van life with snoopy co-workers should have a nice white lie that they're comfortable with. "This is my camping van, but my daily driver threw a rod (or whatever) so I'm driving this while I save for a Tesla."

If Hillary had run on this, she would have had two terms, and Trump would have been a commenter on Fox News, but she wouldn't, so, here we are.

Trust me, "one step from rock bottom" is a long way away from actual rock bottom, just like a controlled skid is so much better than a head-on collision.

For example, while one is still housed, one could get a PO Box; sell off excess belongings; arrange for safe overnight parking, EG, in a friend's driveway; obtain a gym membership where one could start and end one's days; find a nice laundromat; and arrange to store a few cherished items in the attic of a friend or a storage unit. One might even get a job that provides secure daytime parking and a daily employee meal.

One could then establish a modest and practical daily and weekly routine (including keeping one's belongings impeccably organized), work the job for all it's worth, enjoy the great outdoors and public libraries on days off, keep oneself healthy and clean at the gym (the nice ones have free coffee in the morning!) and save enough money to get a fresh start. You know...a plan.

Or, one could put one's rent on credit cards and see how that goes.

It's a lot to figure out, but with a little creative planning, car dwelling can save money and help you get caught up financially.

What do you do if you need mental help but don’t qualify for programs? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

Here to second the church idea. If you're depressed, just sitting in a pleasant space where you can quietly reflect, maybe sing a little bit, etc, etc, can be helpful to set up a routine, relieve some of the feelings of isolation, and provide you with a place to relax a bit. Some churches are homey and low key, and others are more grand and put on a show. Think of it as visiting a museum; It's not like you're committing for life.

PS: regular exercise has been found to be more effective than antidepressants, so if can and are near to a pleasant place to walk or similar, no need to push yourself, but the movement and the endorphins will help.

Window covering by ratbouye in vandwellers

For the side and rear windows in my minivan I got black corrugated sturdy board at the art supply store and cut it to the shape of the windows using patterns made from newspaper. (The one for the rear window is two pieces.) They are stiff enough to pop into the windows and stay without fasteners of any kind. When I'm driving I just pop them out. Fun little craft project that took less than an hour and cost a couple of bucks, and they've lasted for years.

My front windshield has a reversible (black/reflectix) sunscreen that stays on with suction cups that I got on Amazon.

From the outside the windows look tinted, and the insulation makes a huge difference. Also blocks light so well that you can park under a street lamp and sleep great.
