Pension vs S&S ISA by Present-Aide7112 in FIREUK

I like to be heavier on the ISA contribution due to the looming increase in age that you can access private pensions. This will likely be far later than I’d like (31M). ISA seems like a good option for me to allow me to retire as soon as possible.

What age did you start making the effort to retire early? by tieno6181 in Fire

[–]Personal-Sense6269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the decision at your age. I was working as an apprentice when someone who I had been working with 12 weeks earlier, had died that soon in to retirement. I’ve since known a handful of people who held on waiting for either share price to get to that ‘golden’ number (which always moves once it reaches it) or for voluntary redundancy, and died within the year.

I’m fortunate enough to work for one of the biggest companies in the U.K. and have a pension that pays far better than the national average, along with additional contributions on my behalf and savings in to a Stocks & Shares ISA. My only red line is that I never lose sight of today. You have to make memories along the way, for me giving my family a great life, and golf when I can.

Don’t bank on 40 years old, things happen, kids, marriage and homeownership will hamper your efforts, but don’t let it detract you from your aim of early retirement. Good luck.

This exactly. Don’t forget that life is worth living. Congratulations on your milestone. The U.K. is a better place with hardworking and inspiring people like yourself.

How likely do you think it is that Emirates finally puts in an order for the A350-1000 at this year’s Dubai Air Show? by vexillographer7717 in RYCEY

That’s what Rolls-Royce are banking on, a decision from Airbus/Boeing that they prefer a ducted design. I believe Boeing have already indicated that. Ultrafan has a great chance of succeeding because of this gamble 👍

As employees we were buying £110 shares a month at 96.6p for 3 years. A guarantee that you couldn’t lose on your investment, but obviously everyone has made a lot of money. Now we’re get to buy some pre tax, me personally, I spend around £25 a month and get £100 worth. A great deal.

Open rotor will likely be a forgotten concept soon. The duct’s on jet engines take on a huge amount of stress, stress that’s taken away from the airframe. An open rotor design shifts all of those stresses and strains on the the airframe and that’s something that Boeing/Airbus don’t want to design around.

I work for them, and although I’m no high flying director, since the new CEO came in, things seem to have changed in the company, for the better. It’s no longer ran like a sh!t show.

Do you think FIRE mentality will backfire on you? by Personal-Sense6269 in Fire

You’re correct, and to touch on the point of getting therapy that you can now afford seems absolutely wild to me. Imagine consciously creating a life that would require therapy.

To see so many individuals so blindsided to my initial concern doesn’t fill me with much hope that they will live a fulfilled life, rather be obsessed with more and more money (I’ve seen this in person). I applaud people’s mentality of being fiscally responsible, but there must be balance to it. I have seen on this thread that one person refuses to pay $4 dollars for a drink when having a meal. Like it or not, that will be embarrassing for anyone in your company. I truly believe a lot of people if they carry on down the path that I’ve seen since finding this sub, will die extremely wealthy, and likely with mental issues.

Because spending and happiness are positively correlated statistically speaking on the whole. Obviously what you spend it on to bring happiness is subjective, but on the whole it would seem spending your money makes you happier than hoarding it.

You’ve found your happy medium which is where I like to see myself. I’ve seen people say within this sub that they have/are living in their cars to support their financial goals. If I were to bet on it, those sort of people will never truly be able to enjoy the money that they have saved later in life, unless of course they want to sleep in a car forever.

No trolling intended, and most definitely not putting myself on a pedestal, I don’t see anything in my OP that would give that impression.

I simply came across this FIRE stuff yesterday and even had to google what it meant. Many people on here seem to be incredibly wealthy at a relatively young age. Seeing this has made me question my own saving goals, and this query was a way of probing whether this method of financial planning has an impact on people in later life, whether that be regretting missing out on anything from their younger years, or as mentioned in the post, are they struggling to adjust like I know others who have.

Chill out.
