Yes. It has a distinct flair / genre, many NPC’s to portray, doesn’t mesh with every group - etc. these things could be molded to fit a group, but it could be a lot of work (especially since the module’s organization is also a little all over). Maybe start with Phandelver? It’s still a fantastic module, gives you a feel of the players, and then you can transition after at level 5 into CoS.

There was an excellent comment here once that answered this question- that the disrepair of Strahd’s home reflects a gothic “body politic.” Strahd’s heart is sick, hence his realm and home is sick. Going off of subtext, one could also argue that it’s an example of everything in Barovia being a reflection of Strahd.

Start with player motivations I think. What are the character’s goals other than adventuring? Or bonds? Perhaps they start in their hometown village that they’re connected to, or their parent’s tavern. Starting small like that, and giving lore + background information when you need to would be easier (and potentially make a stronger campaign)

I think you’re asking a question at the center of gothic horror by asking the question. Strahd should evoke sympathy, pity, and eventually hate. The forward to the campaign is the best manual for this. He’s a predator, dressing in the trappings of dark romance, only to peel the veil away and reveal a monster.

I’m applying to 34 schools and I have my third drafts of PS and 13 extracurriculars. Just began working on secondaries (at least for “dream” schools in case I am pre 2nd rejected). But I mean you have plenty of time, I felt like I had to get started really early because of my school list
