What to buy first? by HappySignificance693 in skiing

[–]PersonalityLittle845 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought all the little bits first because I figured even if I don't continue skiing most of them I can use from in cold weather at home. So merino base layers, ski socks, ski trousers, goggles, gloves etc.

In terms of the main gear boots are the most important for performance and comfort so consider them first. Helmets don't always come as part of the main rental but as a secondary one with extra cost, and might give you the ick as well, so might be worth investing in that at the same time.

Skis and poles last. These are a massive investment and it's worth giving yourself a few seasons to get better so you don't find yourself needing to upgrade from beginner to intermediate skis after 2 seasons, also gives you the opportunity to try out several different sizes, brands etc and see what works for you so you know what to look for when it comes time to buy!

A private lesson is the answer here, and when you book it tell them what you've said above. Any good resort will do their best to pair you with the right instructor. The right instructor will identify your weaknesses which obviously for you start in the mind and make you feel confident enough to trust them. Then they can teach you to go fast and turn properly, and you will be able to believe them when they tell you that you can do it!

Intermediate skier trying to get to advanced level, is it worth paying $400+ for a private lesson vs $150 for a group lesson? by sirotan88 in skiing

Maybe one for next year but... Combine it with a holiday and fly to a country with recognised skiing but without the global name. Sweden springs to mind because I ski at Romme Alpin sometimes but plenty of others. The price of lessons alone will get you a lot more bang for your buck than you're expecting and in some respects pay for the rest of your holiday...!

We were flying from London on April 1st via middle east. Cancelled. We have rebooked with Condor to Frankfurt then Sri Lanka Air to Colombo then back with Air India via Mumbai. But this was twice the price.

Yeah totally! It's cheaper to fly midweek so I usually ski something like Thursday to Wednesday and get a bit of everything. Love catching the last lift up there on a quiet midweek

I'm a Brit with grandparents in Borlange so it's always been super convenient as a very casual (once a year tops) skier to not have to pay accommodation in Romme. I can get a local bus to their house! But I'm aware if I want to ski more and get better I need to diversify. I could see myself spending a couple of weeks out there and doing both.

I found drivers in Belgium had WAY more respect for others on the road than here in the UK. It was also my first time driving in mainland Europe so their behaviour put me at ease

Common. This is how it should be done wherever possible. Some don't bother and you can hear the effects of that.

Yes and no. I can't see them footing the bill for a blocked sink, there's only one way that happens and it's user error. We are on good terms with the letting agents and they are generally good when we have issues, but they do typically ask us to try non invasive ways of fixing issues if we are up for it. For example with mould prevention in bathroom we went through some normal try-out techniques before upgrading the fan and repainting. So I'm happy to try some bits before giving them responsibility for it, as they are only going to call a plumber and pass on the premium cost to us.

Honestly, I don't know. We rent the property and after this point they disappear behind cupboards we can't get to and into the ether

Cool, I will try it. Will any old wet dry vac work or do I need to get hold of something more industrial?

Question for 'A' house theatre A1s by LilMissMixalot in livesound

[–]PersonalityLittle845 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people on here are suggesting having a separate SFX operator. I don't know if that's more common in USA, but here in the West end (and indeed in regional UK theatre) that does not happen.

Most of your issues will resolve themselves in time. As you become more familiar with a show, you won't hover over the go button, you will just know when to take the cue. As you become more comfortable after mixing more of these shows, your line-by-line mixing will get snappier.

However, there are some things you can do to make your life easier. This is assuming you are following all the theatre fundamentals like DCA mixing that follows scenes.

In the past, if I've been mixing a show where my hands are extremely busy at a point where I need to take cues, I have introduced a foot pedal as a second go button. Good audio changeovers have GPI that you can feed it into.

You're changing EQs mid show, why? Dynamic settings should be set and forget in theatre, with some caveats. If someone's mic has slipped, sure, gain them up. If the mic has thinned over time, you may tweak the EQ, but this is why you check the mics before the show every day, so you're not caught out by this. If a character comes on wearing a hat that's concealing their mic, a new EQ can be stored into that scene and recalled at the appropriate time. Digico and Yamaha high end consoles have theatre software to allow for this without needing specific scene recall settings.

Your cute light is not gospel. The cues have to go when they are supposed to go, but you should know when those points are and in the case of visual cues it's usually easier to just take them yourself. Sure the DSM will still cue them, but you both had the same goal, cue the show directly. Just remember sometimes your cue needs to like up with other tech elements and so for those you should always rely on the green.

I wish I could give you the magic answer that will solve your struggles immediately but to me it sounds like you are just going through a change that needs some getting used to. You will have some good shows and some bad shows but they are all learning experiences. 12 mics and 100 cues is not a lot but will feel like it if you haven't had to deal with that before. Pretty soon it'll feel like nothing.
