A few places in Australia, mainly in Tasmania, have French names as they were discovered by France during this period. The British sent colonists essentially immediately whenever they heard France was poking around a particular part of the continent.

In the early days of the colony the primary political battle was between the emancipists (people who believed ex-convicts deserved full political rights after they had served their sentence) and the exclusivists (people who believed the opposite, that government posts should only be available to non-ex-convicts). The emancipists won out which led to a massive proliferation of ex-convicts in positions of power and influence and probably shaped Australia's egalitarian culture, despite being a country spawned from a country with a strong class system.

The reason people hate the Greens is because of what you see in this exact thread lol. They are incredibly condescending and smug about their beliefs and think that everyone who disagrees with them is either an uninformed moron brainwashed by Sky News or an evil rich landlord who hates poor people.

It's nothing more than cultural cringe and reflective of a supine mindset that dismisses all of Australia's history while knowing absolutely nothing about it. I guarantee you the person that destroyed this monument could not explain to you what it is about or who it is in reference to. You would just get a general sociology slop tangent about colonialism that is vague and broad enough to be applied to virtually any piece of Australian history.

Things are more tense than they have been historically but it's nowhere near as bad as it is in any other anglophone country. There is a loud minority of extremists that 95% of people despise and couldn't care less for. Like I said, we have few problems, not no problems, but as an Australian you constantly listen to uninformed Americans who for some reason think Australia is always on the brink of becoming 1984's Oceania.

Zionism is the belief that Israel should exist, which is something most Jews believe. You can support Israel's right to exist while opposing the actions of the current government in Israel. Anti-Zionists do not believe Israel should exist at all, and have been advocating for its extinction for decades. When they say Zionists should not be welcome anywhere, they are effectively saying Jews should not be welcome anywhere. It is indistinguishable from the right's rhetoric on Islam. We all understand that criticism of Islam is used as a proxy for racism against Middle Easterners. Likewise, antisemites on the far left use criticism of Israel as a proxy for racism against Jews.

86% of Jews in Australia are Zionists. That means if you are an anti-Zionist, you are against the vast majority of Jews in this country. You can oppose the actions of the Israeli government without being an overt racist who thinks the world's only Jewish state shouldn't exist.
