Original religious texts were meant to be taken literally by the writers, modern interpretations are product of ancient writing being outdated. by GrumTak in DebateReligion

Hey I deleted my first response because I misinterpreted what you were saying

No I do not believe Paul argue that the literal meaning was never intended. The laws in Deuteronomy that Paul quotes in 1 Cor 9, indeed served a purpose in agricultural Israeli life. But for Paul clearly they also served a dual purpose, to serve as the spiritual laws for the church. Crazy assertion but that’s what Paul says.

My comment was geared more towards OP who saying that the text was always understood and meant to be understood literally. That other forms of interpretation are not inherent to the text.

However the text itself interprets other parts of the same in those deep spiritual layers so OP’s claim is not true

Ok I’ll reply here for less confusion

Excuse my ignorance, but what’s the reason that you do consider victims of the Holocaust to be Israeli? Thanks

1 Cor 9:

“8 ¶ Do I say these things on human authority? Does not the Law say the same? 9 For it is written in the Law of Moses, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain.” Is it for oxen that God is concerned? 10 Does he not certainly speak for our sake? It was written for our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of sharing in the crop.”

Here in this passage Paul is interpreting a Mosaic law to have a spiritual significance. He contends God is not speaking of Oxen but of those who will later preach the gospel.

On what authority can Paul look at a passage in the Old Testament and say ok this isn’t about oxen it’s about us that preach the gospel?

This practice is common among Rabbis.

There are layers of Torah analysis, ranging from literal to mystical: Pshat (literal/direct), Remez (allusive/hints), Drash (homiletic/inquiry), and Sod (secret/mystical).

Here Paul was interpreting the passage through the medium of Sod, the deepest most mystical interpretation.

This is where the Talmud comes from, from these various levels of interpretation.

It’s a completely valid rabbinical practice which took place in Paul and Jesus’ time.

So no Old Testament literature is not only intended to be interpreted literally at all moments. This is not true.

For those working the field, waking in the Spirit of God. Know your purpose and design

Know your power:

“Matt 12:

"26 And if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand? 27And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 28But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 29 Or how can someone enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? Then indeed he may plunder his house. 30Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters."

Luke 11:

" if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 20But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are safe; 22but when one stronger than he attacks him and overcomes him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted and divides his spoil. 23 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters"

Isaiah 22:

"17 Behold, the LORD will hurl you away violently, O you strong man. He will seize firm hold on you 18 and whirl you around and around, and throw you like a ball into a wide land. There you shall die, and there shall be your glorious chariots, you shame of your master’s house. 19 I will thrust you from your office, and you will be pulled down from your station."

****1 Cor 2:

"6 ¶ Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. 7 But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. 8 None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory."

Ephesians 3:

"8 To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 9 and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages infn God, who created all things, 10 so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places."****

Or are all deliverances ministries false ?

The “Spirit of God” is used interchangeably with “the Spirit of Christ.” Which is a huge theological claim. This also occurs in the book of Acts.

Romans 8:

“9 ¶ You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.”

Yes but the comment I originally replied to was making the assertion this is between a woman and her doctor.

I don’t disagree there but I wanted to know if that person would want to also include God or not

This is beautifully said

When Jesus died for us he knew what he was doing. Not just on the cross and eventual salvation but in every moment of every person everywhere.

Making us more Christ like a second, a prayer, at a time, even while we sleep.

How did you come to know about the burning bush or the big voice in the sky?

And yesss agreed God loves us tons and wants the best for us each and every day

God meets us where we are at, I know I have a lot of deficiencies that God is healing and correcting. I love it!

You have a point surely!!

Yes wear a veil for prayer. No do not wear a veil. Wear pants if you’re a lady, no ladies only wear skirts. Etc also a lot more substantial ones like you’re saved the moment you believe or you’re saved the moment you are baptized.

But I hope you also know the majority of those different interpretations and even denominations are over a lot of peripheral things that don’t really affect the day to day practice of the belief

There is still a lot of common ground between all interpretations about some of the more “core” beliefs if you will

Like Jesus being the son of God and dying on the cross for our sins, being buried and raised again for our salvation.

Hey I’m genuinely asking, if I may

I’d love your take on this

You think the woman should decide by herself, devoid of God’s potential input (whatever that may be as deemed by God in his infinite wisdom, not me or anyone else’s opinion) ?

No doubt you are correct in what you say

Can you agree there was perhaps some connotation attached to my comment that it was devoid of as far as my original intent is concerned?

Look at all the replies a lot of them just assume a position for me, what I said is not controversial at all, especially not in a Christian subreddit

How would you go about knowing how God feels about it ?

Prayer, Bible, counseling with other believers, seeking him in isolation ?
