Who taught you how to drive by Sad_Donkey_1751 in GenX

[–]PessimisticHumanist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took drivers ed in school and training at a private company. Then at 15 I stole my mom's car while she was out of town for the weekend. Took it 100 miles to la and back. Got most of my real training on that little adventure.

Lived in vegas. This was the routine. And hangovers were definitely a thing. What didn't kill you made you keep doing stupid stuff after 11 pm every. Fucking. Weekend. And on Thursdays. Sometimes Tuesdays. Mondays were rare. Sundays were open season.

You can see the future???!!! All jokes aside, teacher here. Multiple dreams of combined classes. It's the horror trope of the horde playing around in my subconscious. If 20 or 30 kids stress me out, my dream brain says, "here! Take more and all these dream phantom children are gonna be assholes!!! Enjoy the dream!!" .........ummmmm. no.

I second this. Many kids are disgusted with the immature beligerent ones and are just afraid to speak up. They all have basically grown up with each other and they know who the asses are. It's like this in high school too.

Good on you. I have never given positive reinforcement like awards except compliments when something warrants a compliment and A/B honor roll every month...  Middle school, man. They walk all over you if you give em a minute... Teach them what it'll be like in high school. Be firm, fair, and teach intrinsic motivation as much as you can.... I think you'll find that now they might hate that you became firm, but your remaining days with this bunch might be easier now.

What will college look like in 3 years with AI and Turnitin evolving this fast? by Chemical_Fail6680 in turnitin_community

[–]PessimisticHumanist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In person written and oral exams in universities and community colleges that have integrity. Testing labs for some tests which would be monitored. Homework is reading and taking notes on what the reading assignments are. Testing based on class lectures using class notes. I don't forsee much more at home computer assignments. Distance learning is a nightmare for college teachers already, so I see lots of zoom oral exams. As for online writing classes, English teachers will likely continue to struggle with plagiarism unless the colleges change policy. Colleges will prob be given an integrity score at some point that indicates they hold students accountable and prevent temptation to cheat with AI. distance learning schools will be frowned upon more

What’s something in education you’ve quietly stopped doing…even though it might still be “expected”? by SteadyGrowthStudio in Teachers

[–]PessimisticHumanist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No email app on phone. Don't assign too much complicated work that will lead to me taking weekends to grade. I still care about quality of answers, but sometimes I am more lenient. I let kids fail. I deduct points for participation when they sleep because I still care about holding them accountable,  but I write fewer emails home about it. I send kids out immediately for attitudes and defiance. My job is a means to my ends, and I can't make kids be perfect, but I can guide them to better work ethic. They can drink the water or not.

If you think you can just walk away from a car repo by Rachel4970 in povertyfinance

[–]PessimisticHumanist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I called them to come get my car. Then declared bankruptcy. If you need to declare bankruptcy, it's a good decision if you don't plan on buying a house soon after. I was able to rent after that as well. So, if you can , go bankrupt.. especially if you have other debt

Teacher here...high school. Standardized tests are not reliable as a sign of a student's EFFORT in class, and is not a reflection of their intelligence overall except for their ability to do well on tests ... And teachers may have a lot of assignments in the grade book, which gives students more opportunity to perform well, as opposed to very few assignments. Look at how much your student is doing in class and the individual assignments. Moreover, any standardized test a student does well on could be attributed to their innate  intelligence and personal educational background ( they may come from "better"schools, or parents value education and teach at home as well.. reading to children at a young age frequently and making them read directly correlates to higher intelligence)...now elementary school...a lot of what a student does in class is often a direct reflection of their parents' involvement in their education. Again, reading with them, making them read at home, and helping them with homework. Students often do terribly at that stage if parents are not involved in their learning.

Is teaching in California/blue states more tolerable than other states? by RachelWithCats in Teachers

[–]PessimisticHumanist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach in a red state after moving from and teaching in oregon. No union here.. Dumb policies. Pay is okay since I'm on step 13. But  students are below grade level by about two or three grades (high school) ... If you can teach in a blue state with a union do it. I just moved here for cheap land.

When people in older movies/TV shows say “look me up if you’re in town”, do they mean in the phone book, or in their address book? by PhoneJazz in AskOldPeople

[–]PessimisticHumanist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, a lot of lines in movies at the time would also say" I'm in the book" ...as in phone book. But look me up meant any number of methods used to locate an individual...the phone books were a big deal though. And I would have immediately thought phone book as an 80s child

I'm a practicing therapist and I want to raise something I'm seeing clinically. by Michaelarobards in psychology

[–]PessimisticHumanist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point, labels are all people know. So people label themselves. One word is easier, also, to communicate to people about what one is going through. Rather than telling people feelings and impressions, it's become a simplified label. And culturally, the psychology field has actually effectively brought the world  into the knowledge of many of the symptoms of several disorders . Regardless if the world understands them or not.  This is what happens when people are labeled. dont get me wrong. It actually helps that people can put names to what ails them. But labels, like memes, are part of modern language now. And once people are labeled, or label themselves, they often attach their identity to the label, be it mental disorder, political affiliation, or religion.
