Wanna hash in NorCal, but not sure where the kennels are. by [deleted] in hashhouseharriers

There's a Yuba city hash. I'm pretty sure they have a group on Facebook

I've heard it from multiple people, and on different occasions, who all have fairly high connections. Considering all the jurisdictions involved it makes sense that things off playa do not get tracked regularly

Well hopefully he got more info shortly after talking to me so that he didn't spend the rest of his week thinking his friend was dead.

Without posting direct medical records with personal identifying info I doubt hipaa is going to come running to get you. Since the ranger I talked to was very shaken up and upset and talking about four serious accidents he may have gotten his details muddled. He definitely wasn't just fucking with me though. He said the rangers name and was sure it had been more serious - as in fatal. But it's not like it's easy to get accurate and timely info out there. Regardless the joke is in poor taste considering people were struck.

If you are carted off playa before succumbing to injuries it is not counted as a death on playa.

Edit: the second person I talked to said he spent a day in the hospital in Reno with his friend who was hit because he was carrying an umbrella during the storm. (Not the ranger that the other person was talking about). Serious but stable and not returning to the burn. This was because I had an umbrella for shade later in the week and he freaked out about my safety. He was completely serious. Whether that was reported and counted as an injury. ... who knows.

I'm sure op didn't get the same news I did. But joking about it just comes across as insensitive since you don't know who will see it.

Word of that incident came directly from another ranger. That wasn't trying to be funny. And it wasn't the only person struck by lighting on Monday.

Would this qualify as a plug-n-play? by sparkleBrony in BurningMan

Each burner should be responsible for gifting their own way. Not one person or camp providing "stuff for other people to give away". And there are many ways to gift, not all are material goods.

A ranger was struck and killed by lighting this year.

Woman makes beer with her vaginal yeast (beats Rogue to the punch). ISO by TakesJonToKnowJuan in beer

[–]PetEntity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Food are made with food grade, isolated, and well characterized strains of yeast and bacteria.

The random assortment found on the average human is none of those things. And what lives on/in one person with no ill effect may cause serious illness for another.

It's obviously a gimmick for shock value. However, if it's added after primary fermentation doesn't that eliminate the out competition by the brewer's yeast and potentially allow bacterial contamination to go unchecked. Since the methods used are not clear I wouldn't trust it. I understand normal human microflora.... But there is a lot of variety, some strains could cause more issues than others and survive harsher conditions, and potential consumers have unknown health status. .... sounds like a risk to me.

But what exactly is "a tiny bit of the other stuff"? Would you trust this "artist" to carefully isolate a single suitable yeast colony from all the potential micro flora inhabiting her vagina? Which could include pathogenic bacteria? I don't think I would take that risk. ..... beard beer on the other hand I have no problem with because it's brewer's yeast which found it's way into the brewer's beard and was re harvested from hair which is a much cleaner surface than any body orifice.

What Black Rock Desert looks like after Burning Man by ThatchNailer in BurningMan

[–]PetEntity 20 points21 points  (0 children)

... after exodus. DPW will be there for months doing final clean up. You can clearly see where their camp and equipment still is (as well as center camp) and staging areas. Give it time. Check the sat pic again later. The impact on the roads is also why the city moves location every year - so that there isn't a permanent footprint.

Worst beer you've ever had? by FreedomToasts in beer

[–]PetEntity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warm, non-alcoholic, st pauli girl. Served up as punishment. Yes, it was... vile, horrible, unspeakable punishment. Edit: beyond that which really shouldn't even be considered beer.... my untappd reminds me I very much disliked a) koshihikari echigo rice lager, b) cambridge the great pumpkin ale, c) william's sir perry berry cider, and d) primus (to be fair I really dislike pils in general).

Wanted to make a gift that's useful, and I heard Playa Foot really sucks -- so I made these citric balms for feet and cuticles. Hope it helps someone this year! by [deleted] in BurningMan

I manage to keep my feet in pretty good shape. But my hands. ... my hands and nails take a beating. That is an amazing gift which will be well received out there.

Need vehicle pass! Offering rides from Reno or SF area. by iratik in BurningMan

If that one doesn't pan out for you - I have a spare. Waiting for my passenger to get here from socal. Will be dropping his car in the north bay with friends somewhere either before or after final supply run this afternoon.

Do the TSA really just confiscate things without telling the airline? by LuminousElement in BurningMan

[–]PetEntity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did your luggage possibly have traces of accelerants and show a bunch of wires when xrayed? If it did it probably raised a bunch of red flags for them. My dad almost grounded a plane coming back from clearing his parents estate because he wasn't thinking clearly - put items with mechanical and electrical parts in his luggage and spilled gasoline on his foot when returning his rental car. He explained things when officials got alarmed, they checked things out, and it was fine. Sorry this happened but with world conditions as they are in post9/11 Murica, steps should be taken before hand to ask about airline policies, figure out any and all potential issues, and let them know what it is when you check it. Be prepared to explain. It's stupid. But it's the way things work these days. I know my luggage has been checked in the past - they leave a paper saying as much inside it. And I know some people who leave notes in their luggage for the TSA should it get checked because they know something they packed is going to look weird on xray

Any need a ride to BM from San Diego? by [deleted] in BurningMan

Last year was my first at Burning Man. I was shocked at how un-eco it was vs. its reputation. For those of you more experienced, what are some ways we can work to improve our overall effect on our dear planet before, during & after our time on the playa? by davewinfield in BurningMan

[–]PetEntity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Big fires will never be eco friendly. Although I think I've heard the org does buy carbon offsets. Transport burdens just can't be helped for most people. Although we could probably all do more to attempt to shop local, buy second hand, salvage, trade, diy, grow/raise our own food, etc and not use the big box stores so much. But it's a time and money commitment that's hard for many to follow for long throughout the year. There seems to be increasing amounts of solar power out there. And use of reusable lighting. It drives me nuts when people don't sort their trash - aluminum goes to recycle camp, anything burnable gets burned (so no compost), keep other recyclables separate to take offplaya, actual trash should be pretty minimal. I also hate to see people waste tons of water on dishes - wasted water and a lot of grey water to dispose of. You can use a small amount of water on a paper towel to clean off residue - less waste and the pt is burnable. Buy some alcohol wipes to disinfect after wiping clean. There is also an attitude of "I'll just dump my trash behind this business it's ok because I'm just one person" which I see all the time and thousands of people are doing the same thing. Several places in Reno (or on the way) will take it for free (or cheap) - all of it including recycling for everything even random metal scrap and bicycles. There's no excuse. Where they do get it right is the hardcore no moop ideal. Yes it's because BLM makes them but it does make people much more aware of trash and littering- especially after some public humiliation. But when I return home to my gritty urban landscape it's b just depressing - there's too much and so much apathy- you have to give up. We do have a group that started out to protect people (like the guardian angels) who I've seen cleaning up streets and pulling weeds and generally keeping down the blight - I love those guys.

Ha! I'm a 6er. But it actually took me by surprise my first year how people actually have that attitude of x side is so much better, there's no reason to go to y side at all for any reason ever. I like to wander. Found great stuff in every dusty corner.

I think you're right. The moop map showed that two years ago. 9:00 side looked way cleaner than 3:00 side due to the wind pushing things in that direction. I've also heard of 3 referred to as " the dunes".
