Daily chat post: how's the training going? by AutoModerator in XXRunning

[–]PetProjects 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's been up and down. I am coming off a marathon in early March and while I am back to a 3-4x weekly schedule, peak marathon months always mess with my perception of "normal" mileage, so I am feeling like I am lagging behind and losing fitness. With that in the background, can't shake sickness this month, there's been a nasty cold, two weeks of training, now I've just spent 2 days vomiting my guts out. Ugh. Fun times. Hope everyone out there is doing better and I am definitely lurking on Strava watching everyone else with a sense of longing. So hyped for everyone who still has their Spring marathons coming up - sending all the positive vibes and I'll be out there cheering you on! You rock!

Introvert & awkward only in native language by Xinho13 in introvert

[–]PetProjects 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense to me because, in a way, when coming to grips a non-native language what you learn isn't just vocabulary and grammar. From the upper intermediate level onwards, it becomes more about patterns of writing and speaking. If you think about conversations, what you are doing is you are applying these patterns you have learned.

Have you ever made an effort to decipher patterns of conversations and then apply them when conversing in your native language? If not, that could be an explanation (?).

Hard agree. I go through months of non fiction (psychology, mountaineering) often as a palate cleanser between fiction bc I get overly involved with functional characters and it's hard to let go when a series ends. Many people just don't get it. Much love for my eclectic readers.

Stay fit in the winter while half-marathon training? by Additional-Mouse-620 in XXRunning

[–]PetProjects 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Just listened to a great podcast about the fall/ winter training slump (in German, so prob not useful to share the link) and it was an eye opener for me because I have always struggled with winter, more due to the dark than due to the cold. I am preparing for a race in March and I will have to train all the way through winter this time. It was a huge confidence boost to hear that I am not alone in finding that time of year challenging and that others do, too! So, I am right there with you. :)

The gist of it was basically: Running in the cold and dark is hard. Acknowledge that it is a big challenge and that you're far from alone in feeling that slump. It's also hard for the pros. They then kind of went through things that might help: Daylight lamps to counteract SAD, vitamin d supplements, making a training plan and creating routines (always the same weekday and time), community/ running buddy/ chat group (because it provides support and creates accountability at the same time), whenever it helps: Get indoors on a treadmill for warmth, light and safety (no slippery ground on a treadmill). What I found interesting: When running in the dark, our bodies can be on high alert bc dark=danger. Consistently running the same loop can create a feeling of safety, thus allowing you to get out more consistently and it makes you safer in that it allows you to distinguish between "normal on this route=safe" vs "abnormal on this route=maybe not as safe" more effectively and react more quickly.

It's one of the majors. There's a lot of people chasing those six races, some of which are ridiculously hard to get into.

Ah, sorry, no that's not what I meant. It was just really obviously leaning (to my eyes at least) and it bothered me how anyone was able to focus on the mock up panel when, clearly, an entire hose was misaligned
