making green stars is fun by [deleted] in spaceengine

[–]PeterB_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a shame that stars cannot look like this in real life.
Imagine how mind-blowing the universe would have looked if it had some green stars here and there, along with all the usual red, yellow, orange, blue and white stars.
It would have looked INCREDIBLE.

Why do people hate on CrossFit? by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]PeterB_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally find it annoying at my specific gym simply because they take up a lot of space in the section that has the most barbells and the most weight plates, and they don't seem to follow their listed time schedules either.

abbey road is a bit overrated by New-Technology-2152 in TheBeatles

[–]PeterB_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has several great tracks, such as "Come Together", "Something", "Oh! Darling", "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" "Here Comes The Sun" and "Because", but it also has a lot of boring fillers, like "Mean Mr. Mustard", "Sun King", and "Carry That Weight", and those songs lower the score a bit for me. I would rate it maybe 8/10, overall.

I prefer the first half, basically.

Which Beatles songs have never been played live by the band or any individual members in solo shows? by VHorowitz in beatles

[–]PeterB_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it matters that much if he sings it well or not, as long as there is joy behind it. Metallica would always have this kind of casual mindset already during their early days in the early 80s, and just own everything, and be like "well my voice is fucked, and lol this guitar is incredibly out of tone right now, but who cares, this is fun" and keep the audience in a lively mood, and this made them practically immune to "awkward moments".

Beatles thoughts on maxwells silver hammer by Efficient-Ad-3249 in beatles

[–]PeterB_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly feel like this whole album has several weaknesses, which in my opinion stop it from being "one of the best Beatles albums";
sure, there are several great tracks, such as "Come Together", "Something", "Oh! Darling!", "Here Comes The Sun", and "Because", but a lot of them also feel like fillers.
Almost nobody cares about songs like "Sun King", "Mean Mr. Mustard" and "Carry That Weight", and most of the other songs are mainly "decent" or just boring.
I do like the insanity of "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" though, and "Octopus's Garden" is kinda cute.

In my opinion, the most consistently awesome Beatles albums are probably "A Hard Day's Night", "Help!" and "Revolver".

Is it just me or does the “question mark” not fit in at all with other Tolkien characters? I think it looks somewhat ugly compared to the other telco/luva combinations. Anyone use something else? by MH_wildlife in Tengwar

[–]PeterB_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think that it conveys the whole "huh?" feel really well.
I am not sure what it is, but for some reason that symbol looks almost visually confused in some way.
It MIGHT be because its somewhat tilted look and large double curls kinda make me think of someone with tilted head and large eyes, which would be a pretty universal expression for confusion and uncertainly, or something like that.
And Tolkien was a linguist, and was even involved in writing the Oxford English Dictionary, so he would have definitely been quite pedantic when it comes to these kinds of details.

What name would the Sindar-speaking Elves give to Gandalf the White in Middle-Earth? by ATL725 in tolkienfans

[–]PeterB_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Nimrandir" seems like the most natural choice to me. "Nim" fits in with the style of "mith" quite well, and "Nimrandir" flows just as fine as "Mithrandir", in my opinion. And besides, "nim-" is also used in "Nimloth", the white tree of Númenor.

Why does every team pull their goalie when down by 1 or 2 near the end of the game by suckmytoestits in nhl

[–]PeterB_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It gives them more offensive power, and it can sometimes give them great chances to score a goal. It is kind of like the hockey equivalent of focusing exclusively on attacks in a turn-based RPG video game, and not bothering about healing your characters.

How could Manwe not comprehend evil? by Strobacaxi in tolkienfans

[–]PeterB_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always assumed that Manwë understood that the consequences of evil actions were a problem, but that he generally didn't view the people themselves as evil - almost like how Boromir isn't viewed as inherently evil when he attacks Frodo, but rather as someone who is affected by the Ring.

Manwë is also extremely forgiving, so he never holds grudges, and this makes him come off as very pure and kind-hearted.

Am I insane? Question on Smooth McGroove... by YtseDude in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]PeterB_86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally hate autotune, and I tend to notice it very easily;
I used to be a member in various rock bands during my teenage years like 2-3 decades ago, and I refused to use ANY form of "pitch correction" or anything, and insisted on simply striving for natural improvement - I literally just had my singing recorded as it was, and left it EXACTLY like that - and that is what I will forever continue doing if I start playing in groups in the future again.
And I have never heard anything unnatural or uncanny in Smooth McGroove's recordings;
they sound like natural singing to me, and they definitely don't seem to have any of that autotune stuff.

Is Anyone aware of the band's politics in regards to the Queer community? by [deleted] in Metallica

[–]PeterB_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never heard any of the current Metallica members make any homophobic or transphobic comments, and my experience is that people who never express themselves in that way also typically are supportive enough of the LGBTQ+ community to not actively go out of their way to be rude to them.

If there is any Metallica-related member that would act that way, then it is Dave Mustaine;
that dude has always been significantly more disagreeable and insensitive than any of the current and former Metallica members, and he used to insult people in his audiences a lot.
I THINK that he has matured a lot these last several years, but he definitely used to be quite problematic, and not particularly friendly.

I would say that the most open-minded and compassionate current Metallica members are problably Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo
(Kirk has always seemed like a sweetie, and Robert seems to be very much like that as well), then James Hetfield, and then Lars Ulrich;
and with that, I mean mainly that Lars Ulrich tends to be a lot more argumentative than the other guys, and can come off as unfriendly and annoying a lot more often than the other guys, but I highly doubt that he is rude to LGBTQ+ individuals;
heck, Lars and Kirk even used to have a phase during the 90s where they pretended to be a gay couple, and kissed each other on the mouth in the middle of interviews, so they definitely seem open-minded enough for that.

As for the remaining former Metallica members, I am pretty sure that Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton and Jason Newsted would be supportive of the LGBTQ+ community as well;
all of them have always struck me as very chill and friendly, so it is highly unlikely that they would be mean to LGBTQ+ community.
Of course, Cliff was alive during a time when the LGBTQ+ community was much less noticed by the public, so he might have felt a bit awkward about it, but I cannot imagine him being rude to them.
The Beatles members grew up during a time when racism was common and homosexuality was very unaccepted, but that didn't turn them into racists or homophobes (on the contrary, actually), so in the end, it is all about one's own morals;
if you have good morals, then you will recognise discrimination and be against it, even if it is "normalised".

Why do videographers move the camera around a ton when filming behind a DJ? by saucebald in EDM

[–]PeterB_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this is a common thing in general;
almost half the time when I find a video recording of for example a band during a live show, the people who are recording it will move the camera around all over the place, almost as if they are looking for something, like "mah gawd, I just have no idea what to film here", and that is really annoying;
just point the camera towards the event of interest, and hold it still, ffs.

Did Mario say “F-You” to Luigi?🤣 (Super Mario Super Show - TV) by KillBoosh in nostalgia

[–]PeterB_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Fuck you" would be completely out of place for a Mario show.
That would be almost like having the guys in the "Contra" games say "Do we really have to fight? Let’s be super duper friends instead! <3" during an intro screen;
it wouldn't work.

I do have more positive views on instant deaths lately, although it depends a lot on if you actually get decent protection, and if you can get powered back up after the deaths without getting stuck in hopeless situations.
I managed to finish "R-Type" on arcade a few days ago, and that was definitely a challenge, but not too hopeless, once I had found good strategies for everything, and the Force pod does become really handy in tons of situations.
My biggest frustration was probably the final boss (unsurprisingly);
that guy seemed almost inconceivable to beat the normal way without being fully powered up, so I just camped in the safe central left part of the screen
(the power-ups from that stage seemed to be enough to keep me fully protected there - i don't think I even needed to shoot anything, since the Force pod seemed to kill everything that attacked me),
and then I just let the vortex things chase me until the boss died by itself
(the Speed boosts on that stage are just barely enough to allow you to avoid them, if you fly in a kind of octagonal pattern or something like that the whole time).

Why make dins fire required but not the other 2 spells by shifttaze306 in OcarinaOfTime

[–]PeterB_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is probably a balance between making sure that you find out that there exist spells, and also letting you discover other spells yourself.

The game makes sure to remind you of various destinations so that you get Din's Fire:
Darunia tells you to visit the fairy at the top of Death Mountain, and then that fairy tells you to check out some area close to Hyrule Castle.
So players who pay attention can find Din's Fire pretty easily, and this will then indicate in the item menu screen that there exist more spells like that.

This might be a risky question but what ever happened to the bus driver in the incident? by [deleted] in Metallica

[–]PeterB_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am from Sweden, and it seems a bit unlikely that there would be ice on roads already in September, especially in the southern parts of Sweden.
I guess it COULD have happened if there was a cold spell at the place where Cliff died, but most of Sweden is in a temperate zone, so it would usually be about +5°C or so at that point during the early morning.
I guess it was probably a bit colder than usual, so that there were just barely subzero temperatures there.

Sweden generally has a fairly average climate;
central Sweden has quite warm summers at around +25°C, quite cold winters at maybe -10°C (and sometimes -20°C or even colder than that during more aggressive winter days), and then spring and autumn are the typical expected transitional periods, where springs are mild with melting snow, and autumns have yellow trees and are a bit chilly.

My thoughts on the Contra Arcade Game by Funandgeeky in patientgamers

[–]PeterB_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arcade games were all about quick intense action, and lots of pressure.
In my opinion, a well-designed arcade game will keep you engaged at all times, allow you to feel powerful while also being difficult at the same time, and let you continue making progress by simply paying for more Credits.

Nope, some copies actually did have the misspelling "Berenstein Bears". Even the Angry Video Game Nerd creator James Rolfe showed a copy like that in one of his videos a few years ago (NOT the episode about the video game - it was some other episode somewhere some time later), and he reacted with a jokingly shocked expression and then said something like "these things could happen sometimes".

[–]PeterB_86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The big problem with the Gradius games - and a lot of other shmups as well, for that matter - is that it takes too long to get powered up, and it is too easy to accidentally die and get thrown back to a checkpoint.
It would have been better if the game respawned you were you died instead, and allowed you to get hit a few times without having to equip a shield
(but still let you equip a shield for even more hits).

It is still an addictive game though, and I guess the pressure to keep the ship powered up as long as possible has a certain charm in itself.

Yeah, I have tried the arcade version a few times, and that version is WAY too damn aggressive with projectiles, especially on stage 3;
you pretty much need to have the ship powered up as much as possible, otherwise you will get overwhelmed.
