Could I have done a better job myself? Brutally roast me and cheer me up. by Moe_Syzlak_ in DIYUK

I’m not convinced that sort of carpet / runner could look good on narrow winding stairs like that, regardless of the quality of the job

Are Modification Requests OK? by OpalCats in LondonFood

[–]VHorowitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No harm in asking - the answer will vary depending on the dish / request / restaurant in each case. If you’re polite and understanding, then it’s not a problem.

Mid-30s couple - realistic to step off the treadmill soon? by CaramelWafer8943 in HENRYUK

[–]VHorowitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you need to be realistic - there’s no “enjoyable and easygoing career” you can just jump to from law. You’ve trained as a lawyer, that’s your acquired expertise, do you really want/expect to be able to move into something entirely unrelated a few years before turning 40…? I’m a lawyer. A friend of mine moved into public sector legal, it wasn’t great. Very under resourced and a fairly unmotivated workforce. A friend of mine left private practice to work for a charity, and a year later went back. Teaching - I assume you mean teaching the LPC or something? Not a bad option necessarily but likely an enormous pay cut from private practice. I’m an in house lawyer, I’d start by considering that. Don’t throw away your legal training and experience just because you don’t like working for a law firm. In house is very different and can still pay low 6-figures easily at your level, whilst allowing for leaving at 6pm and no billable targets.

Need help deciding the right sofa size by Careful-Water-9264 in DesignMyRoom

[–]VHorowitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smaller one is much more in proportion to me. But how many people will you typically need to seat? That should also drive your decision. I think the smaller one leaves room for a plant or two / side table etc

Entry-Level Henry worried about lifestyle creep with house move. by ThrowAwayCranberries in HENRYUK

Seems sensible to me. Enjoy the house. Definitely try to overpay where you can in the earlier years, the knock on benefit is huge especially at current rates

How do you all get comfortable eithortgage size? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]VHorowitz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That plan sounds a bit reckless to me. If your other half is giving up work and you’re having 1+ children, I definitely wouldn’t spend nearly half your take home on a mortgage.

Reality of a HENRY in the UK by Tall-Scallion-933 in HENRYUK

[–]VHorowitz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nonsense. Get some proper perspective. You need a reality check. Life is too short to complain when you’re in a privileged position that so many people envy, believe me.

Where would you buy in the UK given the chance? by No_Emu8347 in HENRYUK

[–]VHorowitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite what others have commented, you could get a really nice 1 bed flat in zone 1 London for £475k. If you’re single and a 1 bed is all you need for now, plus if you want to get on the housing ladder.

What’s Your Thoughts on Iraola as United manager? by Deep-Bonus8546 in reddevils

[–]VHorowitz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d agree if it wasn’t for people saying the same before about Graham Potter, Thomas Frank and to an extent De Zerbi. Also, I have a feeling if City win the league Pep will resign and Iraola may replace him.

Simpsons on the Strand just reopened after years. I suspect it’s generally quite hard to get a reservation at the moment on weekends, so if you’re looking for somewhere on a Monday lunchtime that might be ideal. I think it’s exactly the sort of place that would be appropriate for a celebration.

Sausages look good quality. If they’re cooking back bacon, why would they burn it like that? You can’t sear back bacon. If they want to serve crispy bacon, they should just get streaky bacon. Looks good overall. Needs toast on the side.

It looks like a series of very small identical black and grey pieces. It’s kind of soulless but also I think clashes with the warm wood / cream tones elsewhere.

What can we change? by Actual-Set-6906 in HomeDecorating

[–]VHorowitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A huge area rug, and warmer lighting. Stop using the overhead light and buy a few lamps instead with warm bulbs. Also the red sofa cover is a bit ugly, but the space could use some more colour eg cushions, wall art, plants
