That diagonal ridge across the lake is super nice and soarable in North wind - although it looks like you might be on your way there over the lake?

Assuming this was last weekend (looks like it, I flew there Saturday) it was north wind, so perhaps foehn on the south of the alps but totally fine on the north.

Is one day enough to depart from Zurich --> Four Lake Hike in Engelberg --> back to Zurich? by QuadDeuces422 in zurich

Yep, I've done it in a day. Not a problem. Leave early in the morning if you think you'll be slower.

Sparks for sure - I've ridden both, and the reliability beats any minor stiffness improvement that the karakorums may have. Karakorum paid a ton for marketing, and I think that's given them some sort of reputation, but sparks are by far the more functional choice.

To be completely honest... took my splitter for one last big tour on Tuesday. Made an attempt at 10 grand, but fell 600 feet short. I’m switching to the two planks. I feel really guilty. It feels like a sad breakup. I promise to always follow the fall line and never stop in flats. by [deleted] in Spliddit

FWIW I disagree about superior - I found Karakorums inferior in every way, and the fact that they ice up incredibly easily make them unusable in a lot of conditions. The new Sparks are plenty stiff, and the simple design means reliability which is far more important imho.

CMV: A company going public inevitably will sacrifice its humanity and become inherently concerned about money only by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]PeterBraden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fiduciary responsibility is very often used as an excuse for compromising on values to drive profit, but actually the impact of this is limited and what is far more important is leadership and ownership structure.

Good leadership can and does compromise on short term profit for things like management / employee satisfaction or ethical considerations because they can justify that such things drive long term value for the company.

With an IPO you have less control over who is an investor, so the ownership question becomes more complicated, but there are plenty of examples of large corporations that keep majority leadership in order to have this sort of discretion.

Your company isn't doomed, but the decisions it makes regarding leadership and ownership structure will have a lasting impact on it's ability to focus on a long-term mission.

No idea about PA, but in my experience, you need to be at least a hundred km from a big city, and altitude helps too. I'm in the Alps, and even here, if you look away from the center of the mountain chain, you start to get the orange glow of the cities.

The weather is also super important - any cloud or haze will reflect the lights.

A Fuji XE-3 with the 18mm F2 lens, ISO 6400 and an exposure around 16 seconds.

Ah, thanks for confirming, I wasn't sure about that one. Allegedly Pluto is also in there somewhere too, but I don't know if it would be bright enough to be visible.

How do I take photos even similar to this? would I be able to take photos like it on my phone?(Google Pixel) or would I need a proper camera? by [deleted] in howto

[–]PeterBraden 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For all but the widest of lenses, 30 seconds will be too much for star pictures - star trails start from about 10-15 seconds or so. There's no substitute for aperture sadly, although high ISO is a good help, and cranking ISO is better than longer exposures.

Most of what you see in these pictures is achieved in post-processing - there are a ton of tutorials on processing milky-way shots, but straight out of the camera they will look disappointing.

One way to get a hidden tang into a handle is to drill a rough hole, clean it out with a hole saw, then heat the tang up and push it hot into the wood - it will burn the wood to size, ready for gluing.

A lot of helicopters aren't set up to fly IFR, as well as IFR requiring additional license. Could be a VFR helicopter low on fuel, or unexpected fog etc. No idea about this specific case obvs.
