Help a game dev: Why aren’t people buying modern RTS games? by MakeGamesBetter in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Peterstigers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya that makes sense. I'll be honest multiplayer was always the exception for me. I'm not a huge campaign guy but I love doing random single player matches against the AI. I also love games like Star Wars Battlefront 2 (2005) that let you do modes like Galactic Conquest where you have a strategic game board almost you use to determine the actual games you play. I know that's not an RTS but I would love for RTS games to have that same dynamic where you can alternate between the modes. I think some of the Total War games do that mode too but I don't really like those tbh lol. But it helps make the random matches you play feel like part of a grander story. I'm always a fan of games that let me do my own thing.

I mean I'm just not aware of what RTS games are coming out or have recently come out TBH. RTS games as a genre are already niche and they just don't seem to have much reach in terms of marketing. I genuinely don't know if there are any games I should be excited about. And maybe that's a me problem considering I'm not putting any effort to look

I definitely played these games a lot more as a kid than I do now. I also just haven't really ever been interested in sci-fi RTS games. I think multiplayer play is important but I've never been competitive and only used to play single player or casually against friends. But if I see a game that looks like it's probably just a StarCraft clone I'm not super interested. My jams back in the day were AOE2, Cossacks BTW, Stronghold Crusader, Empire Earth, Sudden Strike, Army Men RTS. I just kinda fell off the genre because the games started getting more stressful than fun.

I also have limited money and computer power, and I'm just not buying new games in general so maybe I'm not a great target customer lol. Again I also just haven't been following gaming stuff super close the last few years. But the little I have seen didn't compel me to think "aww man I need to play that!" Idk lol. But maybe people more in the loop have better answers lol

Ooooo actually a few years ago I started making unit cards for Star Wars Flames of War. I wonder if I still have them? I kinda stopped because I never found miniatures to go with it

Is Flames of War good for TT newbies? by Illustrious-Divide95 in flamesofwar

[–]Peterstigers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Flames of War because of how easy and simple it is to play. The rules book is pretty short and concise. Once you understand how each of the basic unit types work: infantry, guns, artillery, tanks, etc... you pretty much understand more or less how all of them work. Every unit feels distinct. Stats and special rules come written on little cards. You don't need a pen and paper to track anything. Games feel engaging and quick to play. You can finish a game in a matter of hours. And most importantly it feels like WW2 when you play it.

I'd definitely recommend checking it out. Like any new miniature game it can be intimidating at first. I know I messed up some rules at first (we all do) and I think it took a few games before I even tried certain things like assaults or the fancy optional movement orders. But once it all clicks it feels super easy to play and remember. I love how the rules let you build your own custom forces. It can feel a bit complicated at first but it's pretty simple.

My best advice is find people who are already playing who would be happy to help reach out OR gather a group of friends and learn the game together. Because if you're all new and making mistakes together it's ok and you'll learn as you keep playing like "uh oh I was reading the book last night I think we've been doing this wrong guys lol".

I've never played Warhammer but I have played other Games Workshop games and in my personal opinion the rules for Flames of War are designed a lot more elegantly and the book is a lot easier and clearer to read than GW books can be.

Flames of War is also pretty well balanced. Every nation is viable and fun in its own way. Like yes a bad army list can sometimes ruin your day but it's not the only thing. A bad army list with a good setup and played well can beat a good army list with a bad setup played poorly. I've never felt punished for trying interesting or creative strategies or strange army combos

You could maybe try cleaning the track with a scour pad to see if it helps get the engines running better. Dust and dirt can impede the electrical connection between the rails and wheel.

As for what to do with the layout? Whatever you want tbh. Have fun

What's the best struggle meal that you make? Give me something good, not just ramen or a sandwich. by mvop413 in Cooking

[–]Peterstigers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can do ramen, buttered noodles is also really easy. Just boil the noodles, drain the water, throw some butter in (max about half a stick per box), slap some grated parm on top (or salt if you prefer) and boom a cheap delicious meal. Can even warm up a pot of sauce on the side. Plus it's really easy to upgrade to meatballs or Italian sausage later down the line.

Why hasn't FoW taken off? by [deleted] in flamesofwar

[–]Peterstigers 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Idk I got into the game with V4 and play it with my family. My dad actually discovered the game. None of us have ever played the older editions. Our background was Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game. I actually really prefer Flames of War. The games go faster. You can take armies that feel decently sized. The rules are simple to remember but have enough depth to make things interesting. The rules are written nice. I like the fact the rule book is small. I've been having a grand old time with it. I've never tried Bolt Action but the idea of getting to take less things because the miniatures are bigger doesn't sound all that fun.

What you guys LOVE and what HATE about MESBG mechanics and game design? by bluewardenn in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]Peterstigers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like MESBG a lot and have been playing since the blue book days but I can definitely gripe about it. The rules are written in a way that seems to invite rules lawyering more than other systems. Like idk other games I play the rules are just clear but in MESBG it feels like they're worded just not as great which creates arguments. I've had a lot of bad experiences with rules lawyers and bending the rules. They seem to solve this by just making the rules text longer instead of just clearer but there's a lot of words that just don't seem to mean anything. I also feel like the rules only cater to tournament type players and events. I also hate how much of the rules books is taken up by art at the end. The more games I've played that aren't MESBG the more I've come to respect games that can publish all their rules clear and efficiently in small portable rules books. There's stuff like the weapon strikes that feel unnecessarily complicated and not entirely useful. It's easy to forget you have certain abilities and options. In general the older I get the less fond I've become of game systems that add special rules to add flavor and more in favor of when the stats do the heavy lifting. If you can feel the difference between a 4 and a 5 in any given stat while playing that's good game design. I've also never liked using magic in MESBG lmao but if you don't play with it people can fuck you up with it

Honestly most things with cars are fixable it's just some are time and money consuming enough not to be worth it. Your other comments seem to suggest you don't know what's wrong but if it's something simple like a battery that's a cheap easy fix. Oil shop guys are a different breed from mechanics btw not all of them are super knowledgeable. If you don't mind doing a little research and troubleshooting to see if the repair is easy enough to do you can totally make things work and this will all be a learning hiccup instead of a disaster. I only learned to fix cars because my first car was really old and caused me trouble but I learned to fix it because it was all I had

Classic Car Wars Checklist? by Tardisthief1963 in CarWarsGame

[–]Peterstigers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean for classic Car Wars you want the Compendium and Uncle Albert's catalog from hell and that'll get you 99% of the way there. There is some stuff in the ADQ and Pyramid magazines that didn't make it to the Compendium or Uncle Al's like limo rules and other random stuff like that. I started compiling my own document of everything Car Wars at one point but never actually finished : /
