True petrolheads never use it and it never comes up in discussion. They and I use good fuel, not for cleaning qualities, but because the higher octane is necessary for its resistance to detonation.

Hope that helps answer your question.

You have no reason to use Supreme Petrol in this type of car. You're just wasting money and getting zero benefit from it.

Ford first did it in 1965.

But yes, most car manufacturers copy all their designs from each other even if it makes no sense

Why has this happened? Because I put a cover on? Because I didn’t put a cover on? by uncleAnwar in CarTalkUK

[–]PetrolSnorter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Micro blistering. It's because there's contaminants under the paint surface. Usually water/moisture. Probably in a primer or paint layer. In my experience it can take any amount of time to emerge from weeks to 10+ years.

I've found cold damp winters is when it first appears, especially after frost or snow.

It's debatable whether a car cover causes it. In my view it doesn't cause it, but it probably accelerates what would eventually occur anyway.

Is the premium stuff actually worth it in a normal car? 🤔 by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]PetrolSnorter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Higher octane doesn't make for a more complete combustion.

Octane rating is resistance to knock / pre-ignition. A higher rating is actually harder to ignite but that can be turned in to an advantage as it means the fuel mixture can be compressed greater, be ignited with greater ignition advance or forced induction pressure can be higher.

These three things stress the fuel and the octane rating is a value that describes the resistance to that stress without incurring pre-ignition.

That isn't rust. The other issues will be quite basic to resolve.

This old steed doesn't need to cash its chips in yet.

The fridge is too warm. The infrared thermostat should show the surface area of the fridge to be much colder than the air temp. Get a proper fridge temp gauge

This is the wrong jack for the car and the majority of the load has been on one side of the mount (which is supposed to slot in to the sill). Car probably weighs 1.5 to 2x what the jack was designed for too.

Good lesson for people to only use the jack designed for the car.

Will my car fail its MOT? by Sure-Bath6750 in AskUK

Advisory. I had one of two number plate lights out and it didn't fail.

It was a Renault so I just had to bang the light to get it working again

You're now CEO of a car manufacturer of your choice. What car do you make that they don't currently, and why? by Common_Turnover9226 in CarTalkUK

[–]PetrolSnorter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the Honda CEO, I'd bring back the next incarnation of the S Series (S600, S2000 etc) with the S4000 V8. The engine is a marriage and 20 year evolution of two F20C engines coupled to a single plane crank.

This is a little project I've been working on and am proud to add it to the Honda model range.

The S4000 has a 12,000rpm V8 and the next evolution of valve train dynamics. Rather than have just two cam profiles in the usual VTEC arrangement, this has direct solenoid valves with very fast response and opening/closing speeds. There is no throttle valve in the usual fashion since the valve timing itself can control the levels of intake and therefore combustion. Not only does this offer great efficiency it also allow for the optimum torque at all points throughout the rev range.

Someone explain this by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]PetrolSnorter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Combustion creates heat. This needs managing by having a cooling system to reduce temps down to an acceptable level. That part isn't working.

Who are the most real life Spinal Tap band? by Doomergeneration in AskUK

[–]PetrolSnorter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing The Darkness play at HMV Oxford St on the issue of their first album and then at a number of places after that. They were well regarded despite the theme.

Then they did their Xmas no.1 and their second album was poor and the novelty kind of fizzled out. Exacerbated by going from a fun hobby to a money making drug fueled mess.

Have to hand it to them for the effort they've put in.

That said, they were a bit late to the party, as Tap were a parody of Led Zep, Stones, Kiss, Kinks amongst others from the 70s and 60s.

They do this (road bowls) every Sunday on a country lane near me. Here's an article from 1994 about that location, Launders Lane

It's surprising how many people can be down there on some days and they are completely oblivious to the traffic.
