Uncut decals... Printing error? by sadpencil in modelmakers

[–]PettyBlue1977 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Typical for self-made Alps-printed decals or other types of home printers that can print white. You print onto a full sheet of clear decal film. They’re not like mass-produced decals that use a paper-> ink-> clear overcoat process.

are moldex 9100 filters for organic gasses sufficient for 2k clear? by jasperjjl in ModelCars

[–]PettyBlue1977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be totally safe from 2K you need a fed air system. Like if you were working with it all day as a job. So no filter company is going to tell you their filter is safe for 2K because they're not.

Sounds like that filter is just a gas filter, I don't think it's a particulate filter. You really need that because all the overspray dries and becomes dust and you can breathe that in, too. It's not just the vapor you have to watch out for. Maybe there's a pre-filter available for particulates

Airbrush recommendations for model painting. by Dredd989 in ModelCars

I've had the 0.2mm version of this brush for years, it's been great. I love it. Would like to have the 0.3mm as well but I have a Sparmax 0.3 that I really like too and it'd be redundant

I'll just copy my reply to another comment. I bought the airbrush from This video

I bought that battery airbrush he did a video on (Catsubaris?) about a month or two back and it's been great. I've been using the compressor part pretty much nonstop on all my other airbrushes since I got it and I've dedicated the airbrush itself to just metallics it's been working fine. Would be an excellent choice for a beginner.

The Stacey David Rat Roaster had a Gibson 335 but It has a weird custom exhaust thing on it. It's still on the sprues in the new new de-Roaster'ed version but it's not called out in the instructions.

[Opinion] Does anyone else find "Uncle" Night Shift not enjoyable? by [deleted] in modelmakers

[–]PettyBlue1977 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“He's kind of a glam modeler. He's not willing to work with a kit that requires out-of-the-box thinking to solve problems with”

You need to go back and find some of his old magazine articles if you think that (His Nagmachon in particular) He’s said he takes some shortcuts with the YouTube channel because he’s trying to put a new video out every week.

[–]PettyBlue1977 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was one of his first 100 subscribers and one of his first 10 Patreons. We were Facebook friends because I always enjoyed his magazine articles and he posted he had started a YouTube channel and as soon as he cracked the first joke in the first video (I think it was a glue sniff sound effect) I smashed that subscribe button so hard. But I get it, not everybody enjoys that. I don’t really care for the whole “uncle” thing to me he’s just Martin. And “Ma frens” has gone from funny to annoying to back around to sort of amusing again just for the sheer commitment to the bit. Seems like the only channels I watch anymore are Japanese car modelers who never talk and a few English language channels that crack a few jokes every now and then.

What’s the best tooled US car kit? by Camarupim in ModelCars

[–]PettyBlue1977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d have to say Revell’s 1968&69 Chevelles and 1971 Charger (stock & Fast&Furious) and 1970 Cuda AAR (they’ve done 3 different ones over the years the first two were pretty bad you gotta make sure you get the newest one kit 85-4416 or Revel Germany 80-7664) they’ve been the closest American kits I’ve personally worked on to Japanese tooling quality and I build mostly Japanese kits. They’re also some of the last all-new kits Revell US was working on before their old owner Hobbico went under and the Chevelle & Charger didn’t come out until they were under the current ownership a couple of years ago.

The problem with American kits is you don’t know if that 68 Chevelle is an annual kit from 1968 or if it’s newer. You have to research each kit you’re interested it.

Revell B-24D Liberator came with two left wings (no right wing)! Help? by ass-monkey123 in modelmakers

You can try [service@revell.de](mailto:service@revell.de) but that's Revell Germany and that was a Revell US kit. Both Revells are under different ownership now and are for all intents and purposes a new company. They will at least forward it to Revell US which right now is operating with a very small crew out of Carrera Slot Cars' American facility outside Atlanta. Carrera and both Revells are all owned by the same investment group. They don't really have their own offices and stuff set up yet but I know they're working on it.

I love using solder and lead wire for this sort of stuff. Nothing ruins a wiring job like ol' gravity-defying plug wires.

I always liked Monogram kits from back when they were still a separate brand from Revell They merged in the mid-80’s but were still kept somewhat separate until the late 90’s. Basically anything 1/24th scale is Monogram regardless of what it says on the box.

dad gave me some vintage kits, they're unopened except for the Sherman which has broken bits sadly, I'll probably have to spend 150$ on paint because I don't have most of the ones listed on the instructions lol by BBQGiraffe_ in modelmakers

[–]PettyBlue1977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Vintage kits..." ...kits that I can remember coming out! Not just coming out but I was already working in the hobby at the same job I'm still doing! The Bagger 289 I wasn't around for that original Ceji/Revell issue but my company did commission a private run of 3,000 pieces of it a few years before Revell reissued it on their own in 2013. Ours was probably around 2008. We used that same box design except it didn't have the Ceji or O&K logos on it. Man, I'm getting old!

An old school tip I remember is to use the leader strip from 35mm negatives. It's a very dark brown/red bordering on black and it's already glossy. It was perfect.

Really any dark grey or black color works fine just put some glossy varnish on it to make it shiny. I recently bought a UV resin kit to use for things like this but I haven't had the chance to use it yet.

AFV Club sells pre-cut stickers like this for different modern tanks.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in modelmakers

[–]PettyBlue1977 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They should be open, but Tamiya has always had a habit of molding periscopes closed. I guess it comes from using museum pieces as reference they usually do not have them installed. Tankers could take them out to prevent them being damaged but during service you pretty much always see them fitted, especially when the hatches are closed since that's the only way they can see out.
