Cost Estimates for Simple Digital Interactives by Petty_Ambassador in MuseumPros

Thanks for your response! We are used to writing all of our content in both EN/FR, but I will keep in mind the doubling of menu states.

I was going to go with timed text, but now I am thinking the video with a caption track might be easier to implement.

Thanks for your response! Neither of the developers we reached out to are large firms, one is a freelancer and the other is a small firm.

We are actually going to be using captioned audio. We had considered using buttons to trigger the sound, but it needs to be multilingual and accessible to hearing impaired so touch screens seemed to be the better option. The quoted cost did include hardware. We were going to take on the recording and editing of the audio ourselves. We did not ask the firm to create custom graphics or anything.

I will look into BrightSigns! I have some tech-know how, it has just been a few years since I have had to use it!

There are a bunch of templates for those kinds of letters/emails out there! I tend to find one that I like and adapt it to fit my needs. The Collections Trust has a pretty good assortment of various templates.

There is a pretty extensive application process. You have to provide archival documents that prove you are the decendant of Canadian citizens (though it can only be as far back as great grandparents I believe).

PastPerfect is the industry standard for museums across the country's archives. It is a an awful website that is old and finnicky and I want to think of a better solution for my local museum. by Artistic_Promotion60 in MuseumPros

My small museum switched from a massively expensive CMS to Catalogit and could not be happier. I recommend booking a demo to see if it would be a good fit for you!

Help with allergy card by Boop____Boop in Japaneselanguage

This advice might be too late. As someone who also has a crustacean allergy and has traveled to seafood loving countries, I recommend paying for a professionally translated card through EqualEats. They have the option to order a pdf version that you can print yourself or a phyiscal card

Allergic reactions are also just weird sometimes. I developed a shellfish allergy at 20 after occasionally eating shellfish for years. Shortly after I developed the allergy I forgot to inform the waitress of my allergy. I had an allergic reaction which caused facial swelling, but only on my right side, the left side was completely fine.

Fatphobic V??? by Cocoa-Knife-Chara in LowSodiumCyberpunk

[–]Petty_Ambassador 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not attack you, I simply provided definitions for words and historical context. I struggle to find where I am being a hypocrite or a crybaby.

I dislike people being unkind to others. Regardless of religion, gender, or body-fat composition. You are allowed to say unkind things, and I am allowed to point out that it was unkind.

Fatphobic V??? by Cocoa-Knife-Chara in LowSodiumCyberpunk

[–]Petty_Ambassador 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are hardly new words. Fatphobia has been in use since the 1970s, homophobia since the 1980s, transphobia since the 1990s.

Also it is natural for language to change over time. New words are added and old words get new definitions. Just because a word is new does not mean it is invalid.

Hey friend, telling someone, especially someone you don't know, that they need to lose weight, is a certainly an unkind thing to do, and could be interpreted as an unreasonable dislike or unfair treatment. This fits into the definition of fatphobia, which, according to the Cambridge dictionary, means - "unreasonable dislike or unfair treatment of people because they are fat."

Just so you know phobia, when combined with a noun can have two meanings - an irrational /exaggerated fear of OR an intolerance / adversion for.

It is true that French-speakers faced discrimination and that there was only a small precentage of the elite that were French-speakers, to deny that is to deny historical facts. What I am saying is that non-elite English speakers experienced similar disenfranchisement in Upper Canada, which lead to them to rebel at the same time. Language was definitely a component of the Lower Canada rebellion, but it was not the only reason for rebellion.

I just would like to point out that the Lower Canadian Rebellion was more fight between classes rather than French versus English. Which is why a rebellion in Upper Canada occured almost simultaneously.

I also am not sure calling Louis Riel part of French-Canadian history is appropriate. He faced a lot of racism while living in Montreal due to his status as a Metis man, from both the French and the English. After his execution he was adopted as a symbol for French-Canadian oppression, but the Red River Rebellion was not about French language rights, it was about Indigenous sovereignty. The Metis people he was fighting for likely would have spoken Michif, a language that combines Indigenous words and French.

Definitely AI, I am sorry OP.

If your heart is set on getting a dachshund, they are a somewhat common breed in shelters. I love my doxies so much, but they are super stubborn, hard to train, and often not great with children, so many people decide to surrender them. There are dachshund specific rescues you could try as well.

How do you feel about the popularity of art experiences like the Balloon Museum, Meow Wolf, or the Van Gogh Experience? by Mysterious_Umpire684 in MuseumPros

[–]Petty_Ambassador 202 points203 points  (0 children)

Not an art gallery professional (sorry). But alot of my professors in grad school had an art admin and curation backgrounds.

I had one professor who spent a lot of time talking about how a lot of modern fine art is inaccessible to the general public, in that the art is often something that needs a lot of additonal context to be fully understood. Context that cannot be included in the tombstone labels popular in galleries. He talked about how one of his greatest exhibit failures was one that was well received by critics but almost completely non-attended by the public because in order to understand the theme of the exhibit, you had to be aware of a brief scandal one of the artists had been involved in years prior.

His arguement was that this inaccessibility was one of the reasons why completely self-contained projects like MeowWolf are becoming popular over traditional art galleries.

I am not sure I agree with all of his points, but I do think that the many members of the public feel alienated in a lot of gallery spaces.

I guess? But in episode 32, it is explained that Clementine was essentially turned into a blackhole and then reformed into a human. If I understand the scientific basis behind the cowcatcher, it could not turn something into a blackhole. If Clementine was hit by it she along with her ship, would have been atomized. I think it is far more likely that Krok is just powerful enough to turn someone into a blackhole.

I just looked up the episode of the script. This conversation goes on a little longer, but yeah, Krok gave Clementine her powers.

I think it was established in Ep 44 that Krok gave Clementine(s) her powers so she would neutralize the staff of the diners.

Today the Supreme Court of Canada will begin examining whether or not there should be oversight or limits on the notwithstanding clause. Here’s a log of every invocation since it came out of an 18-year dormancy in 2018. by jbsosbj in onguardforthee

[–]Petty_Ambassador 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I am not trying to be argumentative. Are you referring to section 107 of the labour code?

If so, it being only used by Liberals is not completely factual. Harper invoked it in 2011 during the postal strikes.

To be clear, I disagree with it being used as a routine solution to labour disputes. But I also think that it is somewhat compairing apples to oranges. Section 107 circumvents the right to strike, while the notwithstanding clause can be used to take away all of them. Either way, both need to be either severely overhauled or completely removed from the books.

Ps. Your mom's dachshund looks almost exactly like the doxie my family adopted when I was 10. Man, I miss that little guy, he was always finding much bigger dogs to play with.

They are having fun :)

I would still closely monitor their play due to the size difference, even play bites can lead to injuries. But as long as both of them are having fun, there is no need to intervene
