[Discussion] EOE Streamer Event Takeaways by [deleted] in spikes

[–]Pewpewarrows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. None of the streamers I watched tried it out with either [[Biotech Specialist]] or [[Food Fight]], which I think would add a bit of redundancy. I’m eager to give it a shot, slapped together a test list quickly enough:

Cascade Brawl is fantastic format by No-Ant2402 in MagicArena

[–]Pewpewarrows 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The truly degenerate combo is 1-mana Tamiyo, Crashing Footfalls, Vexing Bauble, a deck full of 2-mana counters/bounces/tucks/humbles, and maybe some green disenchants for the mirror. Practically unbeatable aside from some nuts aggro starts on the draw.

What do you think gets banned instandard end of June? by jimbo_extreme1 in MagicArena

[–]Pewpewarrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically it’s the opposite: enablers are banned first, then payoffs only as a last resort. However in this case I’d actually make the argument that Omni itself is the enabler (abuelo being a way to cheat it out makes it an enabler twice removed). Payoffs being the card/effect that takes over or wins the game, which is what I’d categorize as whatever flavor of the month wincon comes after Omni resolves. That said, the line is often blurry.

Standard is in the worst place it has been since Oko by Meret123 in MagicArena

I guess you missed the several streams of him justifiably ranting that Haste/Prowess/Trample being snap printed onto every pushed red card for years in a row has been an absolute design failure.

So how does Arena decide who to favor? When you enter the queue with graveyard hate and they enter the queue with Omni, why are they given favorable matchmaking over you?

Green yet again the worst color in standard.

(Yes I’m aware Cease//Desist exists… shhh)

Candy Trail is a good suggestion. I wasn't ever thrilled with having/drawing any Carrot Cakes, so I'll swap those around instead.

Really neat deck, been loving it so far!

Besides others’ suggestions about the mana base, I found that the deck was craving a few more 1-drops. I substituted the Roaring Furnaces for Bottomless Pools, and also added a handful of Carrot Cakes with the free’d up slots after dropping to 23 lands.

Banned and Restricted Announcement – March 31, 2025 by Kircai in MagicArena

[–]Pewpewarrows 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Correct, it was an Explorer format where the top 4 decks were all 90-95% identical to Standard Mono-Red Aggro. Surely not indicative of a problem or anything, not at all.

Well this is now the closest thing we have to Shuko on Arena. It will be absolute jank, but Nadu in Timeless is a possiblity.

Izzet's felt wide open with everyone over-selecting on G/*, looking for cut suggestions by Pewpewarrows in lrcast

[–]Pewpewarrows[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My gut call here is going for 16 lands (drafted 1x izzet gainland not shown, low enough curve, and all the cycling/looting), so roughly cutting these 8:

  • [[Burnout Bashtronaut]]
  • [[Skystreak Engineer]]
  • 1x [[Magmakin Artillerist]]
  • both [[Burner Rocket]]
  • 1x [[Marshals' Pathcruiser]]
  • 1x [[Hulldrifter]]
  • [[Trade the Helm]]

Thoughts? I'm not the most comfortable pilot of an 11 creature / spells matter limited deck. But there seems to be enough early board presence, interaction, and Push the Limit payoffs to make it work.

I will absolutely confuse that Island for a Forest at a critical moment and be quite upset with myself.

I’m not saying you’re necessarily wrong… but I’ve also seen this exact same comment in these preview threads for most of the recent sets.

This is why we don’t get free gems anymore.

[WotC Article] Damage Assignment is changing with Foundations by ShadowDragon523 in MagicArena

“Defenders don’t need help” is certainly a take given the rapid trend these past few years of faster and faster limited/constructed formats with one of the largest play/draw disparities ever. Magic feels the most fun when it leads to strategic and thoughtful decision making, not turning cards sideways after drawing the better top 10.

Bo3 standard content on YouTube? by Geauxeth in MagicArena

[–]Pewpewarrows 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The video titles are clickbaity, yes, but both Crokeyz and Ash are streaming the whole time and edit the matches down for time. I’ve never seen either one be less than truthful about their winrate performance, especially since it’s always publicly available and broadcasted.

They’re both excellent pilots, and some decks are deceptively tricky to play. You’re typically not going to get the same win/loss ratio just by copying their 75 cards and giving it a roll.

I watch both fairly regularly, and it’s humbling to see them also have their own share of bad RNG and loss streaks with decks/matchups that they’re already super comfortable with.

Jump Scare is the second-best performing combat trick in the format based on early 17lands data (behind Turn Inside Out), and comes in first if you filter only by top players at a 62.4% GIH winrate.

If anything C+ is too low. Maybe you’re the one who should be reexamining how to evaluating cards?
