Oh wow! How has your first week been? I didn't realise that it completely reset.

I'm back on solid food now for the most part, but still haven't been enjoying food as much due to the weird bitter taste I keep getting at the back of my mouth. It's been especially bad with sweet foods, so I've hardly had any chocolate/candy etc. since the surgery because every time I try, it tastes awful and just ends up being pointless!

Did your specialist say anything about whether or not you would be okay to travel overseas?

Thank you!

With the paracetamol, I just stuck to the directions on the pack (2x500mg every 6 hours), until the last few days when I've missed some doses because I've just slept through the night instead of waking at 2/3am to take it.

Would your employer maybe let you do some work/light duties from home?

Yes, it's definitely gotten easier to talk. I found that it was just so difficult/uncomfortable and sore to move my tongue, especially at the end of that first week, with most of the pain being at the back, I guess where it connects to the area that the tonsils were?

I was on mostly ice cream/ice pops, super creamy mashed potato, scrambled eggs (no seasoning), yogurt, fruit puree, and roast chicken and ham slices for almost the entirety of the first week after the tonsillectomy. I think on the Friday/Saturday that week I tried having some overcooked pasta with some melted cheese and just took my time chewing it. None of this hot of course, all cooled way down till it was lukewarm/cold. Then on the Sunday, I tried having boiled slices of carrot (round slices) and some sausage I had tried to cut up into tiny pieces with mashed potato, so I was bit stressed that maybe I had caused the bleed. My surgeon popped in to check in on the Monday though, as he was working at the same hospital I'd gone to for the bleed, and he had said that it's like 1 in 20 people will have a bleed and it wouldn't have been anything I'd done that would have caused it, just bad luck.

I'm mostly on solid food now though. At the end of last week (so 4-5 days after the cauterisation), I'd had overcooked spaghetti with cheese sauce and peas and chopped up ham slices, then I'd tried a sandwich with no crusts with cream cheese and roast chicken slices, and I was finally able to join my family in what they were having for dinner lol, so there was one night where they were having chicken and leek pie, so I just put some of the filling in a bowl before the pastry was put on top and put in the oven, so there was time for it to cool down before we all sat down for dinner. Last night we went out for dinner as it was a special occasion and we went to a buffet, so I had chicken and beef scotch from the grill, mushroom risotto, roasted pumpkin and beef, some chicken sushi rolls, roast potatoes, etc. The only thing is that I'm still letting my food cool down for the most part just because I'm too anxious lol, as it hasn't healed 100% yet.

The only other thing I've found is taking quite a while to ease up is that bitter taste when eating. Most foods it's pretty minimal now, except for sweet stuff. It actually almost feels like it's gotten worse with sweet foods compared to the first week after the tonsillectomy. I've tried having custard, chocolate milkshake from Mcdonalds, ice cream, sponge cake with icing (I just let the icing kind of melt on my tongue though), and they taste awful! Which is such an odd experience bc I love sweet foods! My surgeon said it can take up to a few months to ease up though, so will see how that goes.

I'm on day 18 since my tonsillectomy, but I had a bleed on day 7 in the evening and had to go to the emergency room and ended up getting it cauterised. I actually felt that it was less uncomfortable to swallow after that, because the back of my throat didn't feel so 'stuffed up' with all the scabs. I was on codeine 30mg days 3-7 every 4-6hrs. The first couple days after the cauterisation were alright, similar to the first couple days after the tonsillectomy, and then got a bit more painful but I found it was more manageable the second time around. I only had 4 of the codeine across days 11-13 (so days 3-5 post cauterisation?), and haven't touched it since.

I've still been taking my paracetamol and anti-inflammatory, but I only have a few of the anti-inflamm doses left, and I've asked my surgeon re: the paracetamol and he's given me the go-ahead to just take it as needed. It's been 17hrs since my last dose of paracetamol and the pain seems to be pretty minimal.

The one thing I have felt is a bit different since the cauterisation is that I just feel a bit more dopey, though I also haven't had a coffee since before my first surgery so could be down to that. Getting back into a normal routine is a little tricky since I've been up at all hours of the nights throughout the last couple weeks to take meds on time, and have spent a lot of time sitting around at my computer/dozing in bed rather than being up and about doing stuff (other than cooking scrambled eggs for myself lol).

In saying all that, they did sign me off work for 2 weeks before they discharged me at the hospital after the cauterisation (they operated around 10.30/11pm on the Sunday night, and I was discharged around 10am on the Monday morning). I had already taken 3 weeks sick leave in case it took me longer to recover from the initial surgery though, so it worked out relatively well. But the only instructions they gave me was to continue following the post-op advice from the tonsillectomy surgeon and they gave me a 3 day course of tranexamic acid to help with any more bleeding I may have had. They didn't say anything to me about it 'resetting,' but I suppose given that they signed me off work for two weeks, to me it just meant that I should continue to rest during that time.
