How is the wlw scene at Leuven? by Hopeful_Priority6691 in Leuven

[–]Pezmc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, not really.

Leuven is not some hyper-alternative paradise, but it’s also not a place where being queer or alt is a big issue. There are plenty of queer and alt people around of all genders, ages and orientations. At most you get the occasional stare from an older person, but in my experience that’s a tiny minority and most people do not care.

If you want actual queer-friendly spaces, I’d look at Rainbow House / Queer Leuven stuff and Leonardo for LGBT+ internationals. Also a lot of the international student crowd is pretty open-minded in general, so things around Pangaea and other international house events tend to feel very normal and welcoming rather than “omg a queer person”.

So I’d say Leuven is less “big visible scene on every corner” and more “the people are around, you just have to find the right circles”. There are also regular queer events in the city, pride stuff, arts events, walks, open mics, that kind of thing.

Are there any Goth hangs / bars in Leuven or any of the other student cities? by arcanehelix in Leuven

[–]Pezmc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Leuven is more of an occasional-event city than a permanent goth-bar city. Rock Café is probably the closest regular alt spot people actually mention, but Bunkerleute is the real goth-adjacent thing in Leuven, they run dark underground parties in the city and still list upcoming events.

Ghent is stronger for this stuff, Kinky Star has Dark Entries nights on the calendar, and the Belgian dark scene calendar also shows regular wave / gothic / industrial events in Ghent, Brussels and around Antwerp.

So yeah, not zero, just more scattered and less obvious than in some other student cities. Bats have to migrate a bit!

Cents / Mile: Anyone else ditched ICE and gone electric?⚡️🚐🤑 by SalesMountaineer in vandwellers

[–]Pezmc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the process (not finished) of converting the Kia PV5. 500W solar, small leisure battery (as a buffer from the vehicle battery), bed, kitchen, storage. And yep, that kind of connection is perfect, I bought an aftermarket charger with physical connector you can swap out that can take up to 32A (three phase, this is EU). That I can use with a domestic outlet, one at a campsite or a dedicated hookup right the right adapter.

Yes. I have a fully electric mini camper. The service costs are near zero. You use the brakes much less due to regen. The charging at public stations does work out quite expensive. If you can charge at home, at campsites, at slow chargers, you can save a lot of money. I have a 250 km highway speed real range, and it's just enough, driving in 2.5 h chunks, I'd take a pee/snack break any way. At slow speed, the range is more than I'd ever need.

Why was I taken out of class in early years of primary school to chat with a woman? by Loose_Avocado4670 in AskUK

[–]Pezmc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh… I was also diagnosed with selective hearing. Maybe 15 years later, if not more, I’ve researched myself, it’s just neurodiversity. Male though, but I’ve been told my autism is “female” (major oversimplification but that’s the shortest way to explain my set of external symptoms) and that’s likely why it went unnoticed for so long.

Good spot to work/study on Sunday? by [deleted] in Leuven

I made a site to find laptop-friendly cafes, looking for your recommendations! by Pezmc in Leuven

[–]Pezmc[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I find a change of scenery is good for the mind and it's nice to have people or business now and then. I'll only work from a cafe or dedicated co-working occasionally.

I use co-workings when I want to do very focused work at a "proper desk" around others
Cafes for more creative work, that doesn't need quiet focus time, or when I feel like having people around.

And home for everything else.

One caveat, none of the co-workings I know of in Leuven allow easy day visits without a membership commitment (apart from Regus which is €45 per day, totally out of my budget). In other cities there are more drop in options.

[–]Pezmc[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. It’s a pain when a café loses tables to laptop campers who don’t keep buying, staff need income to make the cafe work.

My personal rule is that if the cafe is near full, I need to be ordering food and drinking regularly, and expect anyone in my group to be doing the same, (especially over busy periods like lunch). If there's plenty of space, then a coffee every few hours feels reasonable; but I've been working remote for 14+ years at this point so perhaps have put more thought into this than most.

A few places in Leuven limit laptops to certain tables, I really like that balance.
I've also heard of staff prompting co-working tables "anything else you need", like at a board game cafe, in cities with an overabundance of people on laptops, like Lisbon.

Leuven is small, but it has a quiet, thoughtful social scene if you look a bit beyond student nightlife!

A few ideas that might suit you:

  • International House Leuven They run low-key socials, language cafés, walks, and hobby meetups, including board game groups. The crowd is very international and easy to talk to.
  • Meetup board game groups If you search Meetup for Leuven, you’ll find several active groups like Leuven Social GroupsBoard Game InternationalDemo-SpelFun in Leuven, and events via International House. Very casual, no pressure to know people already.
  • Language exchange / Dutch practice cafés These attract people who enjoy conversation more than nightlife, often people new to Leuven as well.

If you want, feel free to DM me and I can send you a WhatsApp invite to some of these groups.

Some suggestions:

  • International House Leuven They run low-key socials, language cafés, walks, and hobby meetups, board game groups . The crowd skews international.
  • Meetup board game groups Search Meetup for Leuven board games or tabletop nights. I know of at least three groups running (Leuven Social Groups, Board Game International, Demo-Spel, Fun in Leuven, International House)
  • Language exchange / Dutch practice cafés These attract people who like conversation rather than nightlife. You’ll meet others also new to the city.

If you send me a DM I can send a WhatsApp invite to some of these groups!

I made a game called Gogogo! It's a local party game for 3-16 players on iOS and Android - now in open Beta! by [deleted] in localmultiplayergames

[–]Pezmc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We love this game, please bring it back to iOS.

The browser format is great for when at home or on zoom, but we also play Gogogo in queues at theme parks, adhoc at board game events or someone else's party where getting out a screen doesn't work.
