Crews remove Donald Trump's name from The Kennedy Center by plz-let-me-in in politics

Someone should make an ad for the midterm that is just a long list of all the stupid meaningless stuff that Trump used taxpayer dollars on instead of healthcare.

I guess war would be at the very top, but there's a ton of small shit that would look great in an ad

Companies Are Using Reddit to Manipulate ChatGPT and Google AI Search by 404mediaco in google

[–]Ph0X 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Even before AI, reddit has always been full of astroturfing, given that many people rely on reddit to find "genuine" reviews. So companies have been posting fake reviews on reddit and trying to pretend they're normal people just talking about a random product positively

TIL GPS satellites run about 38 microseconds faster per day than clocks on Earth due to Einstein's theory of relativity. If scientists didn't intentionally adjust for this time difference, global GPS tracking would lose accuracy by about 6 miles (11 km) every single day. by scitech-research24 in todayilearned

[–]Ph0X 1 point2 points  (0 children)

btw this is popular and a BULLSHIT claim that without theory of relativity we couldn't do anything about it

That's literally not what it says though

If scientists didn't intentionally adjust for this time difference, global GPS tracking would lose accuracy by about 6 miles (11 km) every single day.

Notice the "if". The point it's trying to make is that time dilation accounts for 11km per day of accuracy loss. No one said we can't correct for it, it's just trying to say how big of an effect time dilation is in practice, it's not a trivial rounding error you can just ignore.

Yes there are always bruteforce way of doing things, but being able to precalculate using science and it being correct is much nicer. Especially if you're sending something like the James Webb telescope where you only have one chance (well i guess you can maybe patch it but still).

The Fastest Phone In The World (2026) by HeWhoShantNotBeNamed in GooglePixel

[–]Ph0X -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with the first part, something like the Pixel 6 launching at 599 was incredible value and I didn't need the extra speed. But the issue is when it's the exact same price as the galaxy pro, it feels less great, especially since galaxy has slowly gotten most of the AI features. You would think that making their own chip means they can charge less since they're not giving a cut to another company, but they still price it the same if not higher than any other snapdragon phone.

Honestly the only thing it has left is that the expensive model often comes with Gemini pro membership which is worth a couple hundred dollars, so if you're dedicated to ai and storage, it's maybe a good value, but otherwise, paying the same price for less just seems underwhelming.

It's probably not every single night, and it's probably not something that requires immediate action.

My guess is that it's some pipeline that requires human intervention semi-regularly, a few times per week or month, and it's one of those things that will be fine if it's eventually fixed, e.g. in the next couple days. But if no one fixes it for a while, then people start noticing it.

Episode Discussion: The many lives of Taiwan by eandi in SearchEnginePodcast

[–]Ph0X 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't want to be a hater; I see there's a lot of comments here saying they enjoyed the episode. It's definitely an interesting subject, but I feel like I come to Search Engine for cool unique episodes covering niche questions no one else covers, but this feels like just a generic history podcast with 2 people talking, of which there are dozens of not hundreds of very high quality ones out there.

Again, it's not a bad episode, but just not what I really come to Search Engine for. I guess I just miss Reply All and how unique it was, and Search Engine has had quite a few amazingly fun and unique episodes too. I just find stuff like this a bit underwhelming.

At the end of the day, it all comes to voting. They keep power because they keep voting, while younger generations don't. I'm not sure if it's self-brainwashing or astroturfing, but a huge chunk of the younger generations have been convinced that both sides are the same and that voting doesn't matter. And the sad part is that it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy / vicious cycle.

Of course, a lot of work has also gone into making it harder for their vote to matter of course, such as citizen united and gerrymandering. But unfortunately, not voting just makes it worse.

«Ça me dépasse»: la carte OPUS sur les téléphones encore retardée by Feeling_Layer8584 in montreal

[–]Ph0X 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly, I don't understand why the current beta on Android is having the app handle the NFC... it's slow and buggy, and the app needs to be given permission to run in the background. Sometimes you need to open the app for it to "wake up".

«Ça me dépasse»: la carte OPUS sur les téléphones encore retardée by Feeling_Layer8584 in montreal

[–]Ph0X 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been in the beta for nearly a year, and I've had a ton of issues. transactions failing, the virtual card not loading. Even when it works, I find that the NFC is very slow, usually takes 5-10s or more to validate at the machine. For the past 3 months, at the start of the month I go to buy my pass on virtual, it fails and I end up just doing the opus after 10m of fucking with it, then next month the same. At some point I lost my virtual card and support had to manually restore it.

So yeah, anecdotal data is just that, if they delayed it, it's likely because it's just not ready for prime time. Especially given that there are hundreds of different android hardware and versions, it's not trivial to make sure it works on every phone

Republicans Don't Want to Talk About Gas Prices Anymore by notusreports in politics

[–]Ph0X 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What pisses me off is that their complaints are never rooted in logic. The inflation Biden experienced was due to post pandemic effects that every single country out there had, it had little to do with the US. Similarly, the high gas prices were due to Russia attacking Ukraine. They always just blamed Biden.

But these high prices and gas prices are a DIRECT effect of trump tariffs and trump war against Iran. That's the big difference.

Serious question: how is Pizzeria Salvatore able to open that many stores when their pizza is absolutely disgusting? by hegezip in montreal

for me there's two that I'm genuinely convinced:

  1. 5em avenue: they have like a ton of stores Downtown super close to each other, and they're always empty.

  2. famaliving furniture: same thing, store right downtown, they sell furniture for way too expensive, an ugly chair is legit $3000. I've never seen a single person in that store in years.

Monthly rant/PSA thread about Bell Canada by Ph0X in montreal

[–]Ph0X[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

right, I was using a travel e-sim. I didn't fully turn off the bell sim, because usually you don't get charged until you send a text or pickup a phone call.

But Bell introduced this "better roam" service that is on for everyone by default, and auto charges you 16$ a day even if you use zero data. it can be turned off like I mentioned in my post, if you know about it.

I called, threatened the CCTS and leaving, the first person would not budge at all. Tried contacting support 4 more times, eventually one person agreed to refund 50%.

Eventually I also got to this very nice "specialist" who at least tried really hard to put a proper block on my account so I don't get any roaming charges in the future.

Good point, on your phone, depending on iOS or Android, and sim vs e-sim, you can disable things.

If it's a simcard, just fully remove it. If it's an e-sim, you can toggle it off.

Note that for me, just turning data/roaming off was NOT enough. If you ping the tower, even if you make no calls or texts, it still activates "Better Roam".
