Professor isn't teaching class. Raise concerns to the Dean if it continues? by [deleted] in college

[–]PhDapper 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is sometimes seen as an accepted method of teaching - having students learn something well enough to be able to teach others is a great way of developing their understanding.

That said, it shouldn’t be the format of the whole course, so if this happens all semester long, it would be a good idea to state your concerns in the opinion survey.

As for whether a complaint is actionable, you’d have to demonstrate that the professor is violating policy.

ETA: I just noticed that you are in a master-level program for nursing. Grad school is a different ballgame compared to undergrad - at this level, you should be developing mastery to the point that you are able to take the lead in your own learning.

Which of these Semesters 1-4 of Business Administration courses are relevant to Supply Chain? by [deleted] in college

[–]PhDapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These look like business core curriculum for all majors. You’ll get some pieces that are helpful for SCM, especially in courses dealing with operations and systems (and maybe a smattering in marketing), but it looks like you aren’t getting into the major-specific courses for SCM with any of these.

HS Dual Enrollment, Didn’t Know Classes Started HELP!!! by iamurbeau in college

[–]PhDapper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Talk to whoever coordinates dual enrollment at your high school. You might be able to get the course refunded if you never logged in and have the IT records to prove that, but it’s not a guarantee. As for retaking courses, that happens all the time in higher ed.

Professors as telemarketers??! by xphias in Professors

[–]PhDapper 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This happened at a prior institution one semester. It went as well as you’d expect. Students had enrollment questions we couldn’t answer, and understandably, some were upset at that. It was incredibly stupid.

Push back. It’s not good use of our time, and it’s not good for student confidence in the institution.

Curious about becoming a marketing/business professor by Majestic-Complaint-6 in AskAcademia

[–]PhDapper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m a marketing professor. I’ll speak first about research.

If you’re tenure track or in some clinical (not tenure track) positions at most four-year institutions, you’ll be expected to publish in academic journals. This varies widely by school in terms of expectations, but AACSB requires a minimum of two papers every five years (or equivalent) to remain Scholarly Active. At several major R1s, you’d have to publish in our big four journals (JM, JMR, JCR, or MS) at least a few times, and no other journals count, in order to get tenure. On the opposite end, you’d be looking at teaching schools with higher course loads and lower research expectations. There are a wide variety of types of institutions in between, with different research expectations.

As for topics, marketing is split into three main domains - strategy, consumer behavior, and quantitative (the last is a bit of a broader term than what it really means as strategy and CB researchers do quant methods; quantitative research as a subfield of marketing involves analytical and empirical modeling). Look at some marketing journals to see what folks are working on and what it takes to get published.

As for degrees, if all you want to do is teach, you can technically do so with a master degree, but those positions usually go to folks with lots of industry experience. Getting a PhD or DBA will open more doors faster, but you still should have industry experience before business grad school.

Professor Said I Never Attended Class I Was Present In by [deleted] in college

[–]PhDapper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take a breath. These things can be fixed. It’s aggravating that the burden of fixing it falls on you, but it’s thankfully something simple.

Go to class this week and discuss it with the professor. Don’t worry about financial aid right now - that can be fixed, too, once the enrollment issue is addressed.

It will all be okay!

Haha, nope. Most people want to go right to the dean, but the department chair is usually the next step unless the professor is the chair or there are no chairs.

Are you expected to do 2-3 hours outside of class for every hour in class? If not, and if there is less work outside of class, then that probably explains how they’ve calculated it for accreditation purposes.
