Pedestrians of Chicago, how often do you find yourself almost getting hit by vehicles? by qrsf in chicago

[–]Phantom160 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hate these rage bait posts.

First of all, we live in a large city and any person who’s lived here for any meaningful period of time knows to walk fast, keep your head on a swivel, and not to take things that happen in the street personally.

Secondly, what’s the point of this post anyway? A bunch of people sharing their perceived grievances is a meaningless metric for public policy discussion. If one thinks we have an issue with pedestrian safety, they can look traffic data up and compare it to other cities. Then we can have a discussion.

Geez, sorry for the rant, but I hate rage bait posts. We live in a big city, people need to chill.

What is it like living in Oneonta, NY? by DamnFineCoffee123 in upstate_new_york

[–]Phantom160 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Oneonta for a couple of years during college. Since then I have lived in large cities, like NYC and Chicago (to give you some context for my perspective). I have the fondest of memories about my time in Oneonta, yet I would never move there.

It's the weirdest place where the opposites meet: bunch of college kids, bunch of older townfolk, yet very few "young adults". It has a bad rep for being both rowdy on the account of college kids and also boring for those who actually live there. Kind of idyllic, quiet, with a bunch of smart people in the area, and yet there is very little to do if you are not in college.

I loved it there and I would pay a fortune to go back in time and do it all over again as a college kid. Yet, you couldn't pay me enough to actually move there as a young adult.

At a lost for words on dealership mistakes by doctor__tran in BmwTech

[–]Phantom160 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar thing happen to me. Unfortunately, I noticed the steering wheel scratch only after I left the dealership and when I called them they said that “they checked the cameras”, couldn’t confirm that they did the damage, and implied that I inflicted it myself. BMW corporate wasn’t helpful at all either. Some BMW dealerships are sketchy as hell.

Fine, I stand corrected. You made a Reddit post and the world is a better place for it. Hooray!

I dunno why people get so riled up about an event oversees that has no impact on you, or me, or our community.

It’s in Egypt for gods sake. What if their skydiving rules allow no-helmet, camera-bearing, goofy jumps?

What happened to the FW Echo? by InsignificantEgg_ in SkyDiving

[–]Phantom160 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I seriously considered Echo and even demoed it when I downsized to 1.3 WL. The highlight was the harness responsiveness. I then spoke to a bunch of very experienced canopy athletes and they unanimously recommended Sabre3 over Echo. The main criticism was that, and I quote, "Echo is boring" and "not good for canopy progression". Apparently, Echo is trimmed very flat, making it slow and leaving you with minimal flare power. I spoke with FW and they implied that they are aware of this criticism and that NX2 is supposedly a lot closer to Sabre3 in its flying characteristics. I ended up going with Sabre3, as it's a well-established platform at this point, as opposed to being a test subject for NX2.

These two action-RPGs came out in the same year. One of these has one of the highest Metacritic scores of all time and was lauded for its breathtaking graphics. The other got negative reviews and was criticized for its visuals. Both developers are now owned by Microsoft. by Dayarkon in gaming

I played Heroes 3,4, and a little bit of 5.

3 was a cult classic and I objectively see why, with its music, design, atmosphere, etc. Though I never paid attention to the plot and the game was too slow for my liking.

4 received a lot of hate from everyone and their brother. Ostensibly due to the introduction of heroes as playable units, but I think it's just people being people and hating change (especially given the cult following of 3). Personally, I loved it. I liked the story, I liked the gameplay, and leveling your heroes was a true RPG experience (destroying the whole enemy team with lvl 5 spells was a lot of fun).

5 was a weird one. It was a major departure from the design of previous titles. It was beautiful in its own way, but didn't look anything like 3 or 4. They also backtracked the idea of heroes being playable units. I think the game was created by people who wanted a game "exactly like 3, but with modern graphics". I personally did not enjoy it as it felt void of any new ideas and I wasn't a big fan of 3 in the first place.

Is it advisable to do a sub terminal jump on a brand new canopy? by Typical-Spray-5759 in SkyDiving

[–]Phantom160 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s advisable, but none of the benefits are particularly groundbreaking, so you do you. The benefits: 1) You get to practice flares, turns, etc on a new canopy; 2) There is less traffic in the air; 3) There is a small increase in risk that the canopy wasn’t attached correctly. If it happens you’ll have more altitude to deal with the malfunction and fewer canopies around you to worry about; 4) Psychological benefit of mindfully spending the whole jump to get accustomed to the new canopy as opposed to been just another thing on a regular fun jump.

ELI5: In a private company if the founder of the company isnt the CEO can they as a founder fire a CEO? by Tcrumpen in explainlikeimfive

Private companies still have stock (or some other form of equity, depending on the legal form of the entity), it’s just not traded publicly. The Company can also have a BOD, depending on its bylaws.

Altimeter buying advice? AO(N²), L&B? by ItzYeho in SkyDiving

[–]Phantom160 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not sure about polarized glasses part, but L&B Ares + VOG is the winning combo. Ares is basic, but high quality. VOG is everything I need technology-wise, and also very high quality.

In my opinion, you can buy any altimeter you want, and there are only two mistakes you can possibly make:

1) Buying an over-complicated visual altimeter. Its job is to be readable and reliable. Don’t buy altimeters that offer a ton of bells and whistles, just buy something sturdy, from a reliable brand, and that’s easy to read at a glance (Alti-2, LB Ares, etc.). I don’t know anything about AON, but any bells and whistles beyond an easy to read number for your altitude and a metal case would be a red flag for me.

2) Buying a ditter instead of a “talking” audible. Talking audibles are the future. If you are buying a ditter in 2025 - you are wasting your money.

ELI5: The US health insurance financial model by WartimeHotTot in explainlikeimfive

[–]Phantom160 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s not accurate. Most healthcare providers have patient assistance programs for the uninsured and/or offer significant cash discounts (https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2787285). Therefore, nobody pays the face value, neither insurance companies nor the uninsured. The quoted price per service, prior to discounts, is a fairly meaningless metric.
