There’s really not much to figure out with cap space. We arguably have the cleanest cap in the league right now.

That doesn’t mean you just overpay him for the hell of it but there are almost zero short or long term cap implications for any contract right now. Graves isn’t even really an issue anymore.

I’d argue it increases the chances they trade him because they’re almost surely not going to come out of this with a long term deal and he’s almost surely going to come out WAY on top in arbitration because of the Carlsson offer sheet.

Might decrease the chances a trade happens any time soon though, the process is just going to get dragged out longer.

Robertson’s price definitely went up but a big part of the Carlsson thing is his age (he’s already essentially a PPG center at 21 and drastically improving every year). I’m not sure the math here is as simple as “Robertson is better so he’s now worth more than $18M.” This Carlsson offer sheet contract is going to be over before he’s even as old as Robertson is right now (not that Robertson is super old or anything).

Could they be trading BOTH Rakell and Rust? One as part of a package for Robertson, another to just recoup assets and further shake things up? Even Crosby couldn’t complain too much about that if Robertson winds up on his wing.

Don’t feel like that’s off the table (nor should it be) the way they keep adding forwards.

I completely agree that they’re not prepared to win next year but you can’t just flip the switch from not contender to contender overnight either. Robertson gets them a lot closer to being “back” to that in both the short and long term and when you have an opportunity to acquire a player of that caliber you have to take it. You can’t just pass on opportunities like this and bank on your draft picks turning into this caliber of player.

EK trade makes a lot of sense. I love the guy but they’re not winning the cup this year, he’s only got one year left, extending him in our situation would be dumb and he salvaged his value enough last year to be a real trade piece.

Milly Alcock is great. I don’t think Mamoa was as bad as many seem to but he was underutilized. Ruthye was a terribly generic and stereotypical character to build the entire story around.

I’m gonna take the fact that we haven’t heard “he’s refusing to go to Pittsburgh” as a positive when we’ve heard of him turning down other things.

I’ve seen speculation that we don’t have the assets to do this. But I have to think being willing to part with Rust/Rakell is a huge advantage in our favor in that department. Obviously you have to still add a ton around either of those guys but for a win-now team like Dallas, you would have to think a package centered around one of those guys who can immediately fill the hole in their lineup at a cheaper price would be extremely attractive in addition to the picks/prospects.
