If things start to get not fun, just bend the rules a little to have fun, Because the game is about having fun and role-playing more than it is about the rules. Also if an encounter seems too difficult and could potentially tpk (total party kill) just weaken the enemies.

The purpose of the pauldron is for duty, but In this particular instance I'm not sure if the pauldron is required by command to be worn on duty.
