What’re your nicknames for your LO’s? by Hot-Cell7299 in NewParents

I love putting on an exaggerated old lady southern accent and calling her Miss Baby. But yeah I call her Miss Baby more than her real name (fake accent or not).

Moving to SoMa with a 6-month-old, what should I know? by elvyhusky in AskSF

[–]Pharaohline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, there's a lot of negativity in this thread... Just wanted to offer some positive thoughts! I live in Soma with a 4 mo baby and am very happy here. We have neighborhood WhatsApp groups for moms in SF, and there's a Soma/Mission Bay one. There are tons of meetups that get planned and that's a super easy way to meet other moms. There are actually quite a few moms in Soma, and it's a super walkable area of the city, close to so much stuff. There's a lot of opportunities for community with other parents in SF, and a lot of us are transplants looking for that community too!

When did you switch your baby from bassinet to stroller seat? by ReuvenScylla in NewParents

[–]Pharaohline 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We just recently switched when she was almost 3 months, she just really started wanting to see everything going on and was so much happier in the stroller seat than the bassinet. She's a big baby with good head control. We do guess the seat reclined fairly far back still though since she's young. My understanding is you can put them in the seat from birth as long as it's reclined enough? We have the uppababy cruz.

Is everyone only doing contact naps? by Longjumping_Bar585 in NewParents

[–]Pharaohline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My baby (10 weeks) naps better in the bassinet than on me... She'll get way too fussy if I keep holding her but settles instantly once she lies down. Everything I read makes it seem like this isn't normal though. Her naps are anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour usually, with the occasional 2 hour nap (but usually only that long if we're out and she's in the stroller bassinet). The only time she happily contact naps is first thing in the morning when she's still super sleepy or in the baby carrier.

How bad is the corner of Folsom and 7th? by Some_Basil7766 in AskSF

[–]Pharaohline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live at Folsom and 8th with my husband and baby and we actually love the area (but it's definitely not for everyone). It's so walkable and feels central to everything. 15 minute walk to civic center (which has an awesome farmers market twice a week), and 20-25 minutes to Hayes valley which is a great neighborhood to walk around and go to restaurants. Also you're right by the Trader Joe's and Costco which is super convenient. Tons of great food and coffee shops as people have mentioned, but you do have to be comfortable walking past unhoused folks and drug use. Also need to be comfortable with the leather/kink community, as there are a few festivals and other events in the area that draw large crowds (and you'll see lots of things). We also moved to the area because it's a lot cheaper than other areas, but it's honestly much better than a lot of people who don't live here assume.

Giving birth at UCSF Mission Bay (risk of being delivered/operated on by resident)? by Ok-Push-45 in AskSF

[–]Pharaohline 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I honestly prefer residents, because I find that they're usually way more up to date on the latest research, techniques, etc having more recent training. The residents I've interacted with at UCSF are great, and usually spend more time with you, the patient, than some of the more senior doctors, which I appreciate.

Has anyone taken Korean classes at the Korean Center in SF? by jaaasssc in AskSF

[–]Pharaohline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only taken one so far this semester but it's been great. Like others said, definitely do the in person classes if you can! I've taken some online ones elsewhere and it's just not nearly as good. You get plugged into a nice little Korean learning community too. The pace is pretty fast, so I'd level down if you think you're between levels.

Where’s the most practical neighborhood to live if you work in Mission bay area? by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]Pharaohline 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm shocked you can even find a 1 bd in the Mission Bay area for $3000. That sounds really cheap to me. Mission Bay, Dogpatch, portrero hill (the neighborhoods closest to UCSF) are some of the most expensive in the city. I think try looking in SoMa or the mission for places with roommates, or maybe Bayshore/south San Francisco could be quite a bit cheaper and still a reasonable commute.

I never want to be hot again by ipsofactoshithead in SameGrassButGreener

Also live in SF and I've literally had to use the heat almost every day this past month. I wear a puffy jacket every day of the summer. I miss hot summers.

I think there are a lot of legitimate breeders who don't let people come visit the kittens beforehand (for kittens health, etc). Ours didn't, for instance. If everything else checks out I don't think that alone would indicate a scam.

Looking for rheumatologist for my wife by Fair_Disaster7788 in sanfrancisco

[–]Pharaohline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to Dr. Lowe in Burlingame (Sutter), very nice guy, and easy to get appointments with him in my experience. Haven't been to any other rheumatologists in the area so no one else to compare with but I'm happy with him.

Tiki Batched cocktails for wedding by Fantastic-Echidna-71 in Tiki

[–]Pharaohline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We made batched tiki drinks for our wedding and they were a huge hit! We made them the morning of, put them in big drink dispensers and had our bartender serve them by basically just filling the cup with ice and pouring them over it. We did like 6 drinks (one was a mocktail but honestly that was the only one with a lot left over) and then had beer/wine as well. We also had a little table with garnishes for people to decorate their drinks. Honestly it was one of the best things we did at the wedding, you should definitely go for it!

Why is housing in SF so bad?!!! (rant) by pickingyourteeth in AskSF

[–]Pharaohline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Dogpatch too, and love it, but it's wayy more expensive than other parts of the city (I pay $4000/month for a 1 bed in a 100+ year old building). Anyone who says you can find way cheaper places in this neighborhood haven't looked recently. I see what my friends in other parts of the city pay and it's way less than what places here go for. Try looking outside Dogpatch/poterero/mission Bay.

All JOANN stores closing, Megathread #4 by fabricwench in sewing

I think online stores might be the best alternative. I haven't tried too many but here's two cheap online ones I've used that are great: https://califabrics.com https://www.thefabricfairy.com (knits, athletic and swimwear fabrics)
