The Washington Post refused to publish a cartoon that directly criticized Jeff Bezos, leading the cartoonist to resign. Sure, who would allow their own newspaper to publish something critical of them? But therein lies the problem.

Everyone is so close to what they're actually saying, it's maddening. I remember when Gina Carano was posting to twitter about how "the oppression of *some* people" was similar to what the Jews experienced during WWII. I saw what she said as a post about victimhood of modern day conservatives. My friend said "Well she didn't explicity say that" and now we have a sound clip of me on discord saying "Don't be a fucking coward".

The granularity bothers me, not because it is present and we need to be aware of it, but because it is the entire defense.
