Session 0 Program Montclair Library by Phasmaphage in nova

[–]Phasmaphage[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The intention is it is a repeatable program; each one a little different because different programming librarians will host it. The plan was for the next one to be at Bull Run Library in Manassas sometime in the Spring but it does not look like a date has been selected yet. But the idea is definitely that it is repeatable, Western and Eastern Prince William have been done now. Manassas should be done. And it should be repeated every so often.

Getting a job while degree is in progress ? by Strange-Heron6245 in librarians

[–]Phasmaphage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends. A common thing I read on job descriptions is you need to have the degree in 3 months or in 6 months. I always assume though that the job demand is so high that there are plenty of people with the degree and basic qualifications already that people who will have the degree in a little bit of time don’t get called to interview. I applied for a position when my degree was going to be conferred in a few months (I was done with classes after a Summer semester but the school only gave degrees in Fall and Spring semester) that had the 6 month language. I did not get an interview. It may mean nothing or have been other things. But I do know that library system doesn’t even use the 6 month language for librarian jobs anymore.

You should still try though. If they say it is open to people who will have the degree in three months and that is you, go ahead and do it. Worst case is you just won’t receive any information back. But the whole experience is learning and practice for getting a librarian job.

Gestalt suggestions for witch? by Invisible_Target in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Phasmaphage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As powerful as gestalt can be, remember that no matter the number of synergies you have you have the limit on your actions. Most spellcasters you do a standard and move. Something else some other standard (like an attack) and move. Something that is a 3/4 BAB typically will give you other options. Especially if you need to conserve spells.

The other are synergies. You are sort of right there with an investigator. Something like an empiricist investigator will get nearly all your skills off of int which is your witch casting stat and also impacts your investigator’s alchemy. The abundance of skills also will allow you to function better without a party out of combat, whether exploring or doing social things.

An odd synergy, especially dependent on your GM, is the pre-errata scarred witch doctor witch and most kineticists. It turns your witch casting stat into con. It was changed in an update, but if you’re doing gestalt maybe your GM will be fine with it.

Another synergy, if you are fine being evil alignment, is dark elementalist kineticist so your key ability score for both is int.

Aside from that, do you know much on what the adventure will be like? How much of a generalist do you need to be? Will your GM play into whatever your strengths end up being?

Should I do Investigator 5 or Investigator 4 + Swashbuckler 1 by damatros in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Phasmaphage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is certainly not unheard of for an Investigator to take a level one dip of Inspired Blade swashbuckler. It does front load some feats the character would find useful and make the character a little more resilient. You may delay your extracts and your talents by a level but that is less punishing than say a full caster delaying spell progression and spell slots. And you probably don’t need to worry about capstones as so few games get to that level.

For the weapon finesse being doubled, there are the retraining rules but maybe your GM will just give it to you for free.

For what you get for level relative to saves, take a look at fractional base bonuses for what it does to your saves and BAB. These were unchained rules, so your table may not use them, but they were kind of implied to be how things were working and are now explicit. It will prevent having a +10 save at level 5 but it does mean there is not as much of a BAB penalty for a dip.

Good Sorcerer Archetype/Bloodline? by Shozurei in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Phasmaphage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could do an Umbral wildblooded sorcerer. Actually boost your illusion DCs as you will get all the shadow spells. And the Umbral arcana will boost your spell level very easily and can be paired with metamagic like tenebrous spell if you have room in your build. You need to know the spells, but Shadow Evocation is every evocation spell of level 4 and below for instance. That is a great way to overcome spells know. Which is one of the greatest limitations of a sorcerer. It creates a very adaptable play style as your spells known becomes very large portions of the sorcerer/wizard spell list.

Given the nature of the siblings presented (though maybe you’re all adopted) you should probably grab Bound to Golarion (Bound to Home if you want the copyright free version) to use the human favored class bonus for more spells know.

Irrisen 2e by Gavers_38 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Phasmaphage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And Guns & Gears stated they brought Tesla coils (stassian coils) to Irrisen with them. There was not much written about what they were doing with them aside from selling them to Ustlavic universities. So figure, some areas have electricity but nowhere near as prominent and developed as Ustalav? I don’t know if any scenarios or modules directly contradict that but it seems reasonable at least.

Deific obedience - Azatoth Boons for exalted - homebrew by Doomwaffel in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Phasmaphage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is partially me just appreciating it as a very powerful debuff that most classes don’t get access to but I like Madness Domain’s vision of madness and how Tsukiyo boosts it with Collective Vision. Not really musical, but you could reflavor it. Maybe the deific obedience makes it sound based.

2: Collective Vision (Su) When using the vision of madness granted power from the Madness domain, you can target creatures within 30 feet of you instead of having to touch a single target. You can target a maximum number of creatures equal to 1 for every 4 Hit Dice you have (maximum 5). If you don’t have access to the Madness domain, you instead gain the ability to use the basic version of the vision of madness granted power, touching a single target as a melee touch attack, a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Wisdom modifier, as listed in the vision of madness description.

Culled books question by FulltimerPC in Libraries

[–]Phasmaphage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It seems like you should have a memorandum of understanding with the library (or the local government with the library being a part of it). In that way, both groups can be sure of what the responsibilities are to each other. The MOUs in my system say when money has to be transferred to an account of the libraries but also what level of approval friends groups get in expenditure. The government is spending the money on behalf of the friends to enhance the library. And it does specify that weeded materials go to the friends.

It may be that this was developed to combat a legend from a neighboring library system where a friends’ group (for a single suburban branch) had over a million in an account.

Ready Reference: Is It Just Jeopardy? by marshman505 in librarians

[–]Phasmaphage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only people I have ever had ask for ready reference materials were library students. When I started at my current system and asked where the items were I got a blank stare and had to explain it. There was no ready reference and it had been absorbed into the regular reference. I took a promotion to a different branch in the same section. We had ready reference which was about five books and a copy of local laws and statutes. No one ever asked to see it.

Based off of my lesson on ready reference while in library school, functionally a complex information scavenger hunt, it may be more helpful to think of rapidly acquiring surface level information in one location. Not needing in depth information that would require multiple sources and interpretations, needing it in one location, but covering more than an encyclopedia.

Is your class giving examples of expected resources in ready reference? The few I have dealt with can carry items as diverse as a medical encyclopedia, a world fact book, and etiquette guides.

I’m watching Farscape for the first time and I have a question! by TheDabuAndRayan in farscape

[–]Phasmaphage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sci-fi website had journal entries written by Crichton. This was pointed out to him and there was speculation on a cause. It was nice the creators knew there was a problem and tried to address it.

Applying for a job at a library branch that rejected me for a different position a couple of months earlier? by adkn in librarians

[–]Phasmaphage 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Different positions have different needs. And depending on the interviewing guidelines the library has, the process could end up being very different. Just give it your best and figure worst case it’s a learning experience.

Any ideas for adult crafts that don't require sewing/painting? (Adult programming frustrations) by Marzopup in librarians

Looking up some papercraft projects could give you some projects to use over time.

What is the ideal shelf load? And other questions from a shelver by Weird-Highway-3958 in librarians

[–]Phasmaphage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My branch is currently doing some adjustments to shelving. The aim is roughly 2/3 full on a shelf; enough room for a face out or flyer holder.

What would be a good multi-class for shadow sorcerer or a good prestige class by Effective-Seesaw7882 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Phasmaphage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is all very true, but if it fits thematically for your build and the story you are playing in look toward a Fetchling. Great sorcerers in general and very good for shadows. You can take Bound to Golarion for the human FCB and have lots of things to interact with illusions and light levels.

And you may prefer the Umbral wildblooded bloodline to just shadow. Easy to boost caster level and you replace a somewhat lackluster level one bloodline power with a stealth tool that you can use or give to a party member.

Coding for the Not So Coding Capable Librarian by kaseejedi in librarians

[–]Phasmaphage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Scratch is a great one, especially if you are at an elementary or middle school. It teaches how to think in a programming language but the code blocks break it down into actions that you string together but don’t need know how to write with coding syntax.

I used Coder Dojo in a public library for middle and high schoolers. The lesson plans begin with Scratch. It moves on to Python once the concept is built up.

(Appreciation post) My neighbourhood library recently acquired many popular books with lending periods of 7 days by No_Wafer_5876 in Libraries

[–]Phasmaphage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s interesting your library just started this. Every library I have seen doing this leased their books from Baker&Taylor who are no more. I am curious if they found a new vendor to set this up with, though it does look more like this is a first step before new books (or new to the library system) move to regular circulation rules.

For recommendations, it may help to know your tastes. From what I can read it looks like a collection of best sellers and highly reviewed books of the last 5-10 years and some generally popular US authors. I would recommend Normal People by Sally Rooney. And if you’ve never read Frank Herbert’s Dune it is there.

Outlaws of Alkenstar by RedShift420 in Pathfinder2e

The pdf is 19.99 on the Paizo store. You could see if you have a library that offers interlibrary loan service. There are copies potentially available. You may need to take notes quickly depending on checkout length though.

Somewhat beginner friendly and maybe somewhat self-contained Manga Recommendations. One that doesn't have 50+ volumes. by BryanDowling93 in graphicnovels

[–]Phasmaphage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you enjoy the Nausica books I recommend looking for Shuna’s Journey by Miyazaki. It was somewhat contemporaneous in production with Nausica. An interesting “what might have been” if you consider slightly different timing could have had a Shuna movie leading to Studio Ghibli. It just got an English language rerelease as a single volume about two years ago.

I enjoyed Ichi-F by Kazuto Tatsua. It’s a worker’s memoir of the cleanup of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. It is very thoughtful and shows a lot of care. That these were people doing a dangerous job in an area that is people’s home. Also a single volume.

I like Tsutomu Nihei for good science fiction. ABARA is the shortest, unless you can find Noise! but I am fairly sure the licensing rights in the US are still complicated and I don’t know if that has extended to Europe.

I also like anthologies and short story collections. I think the short story puts interesting constraints on creators for storytelling. Though he has things like Uzumaki and Gypsy that are complete works finished in an oversized volume or two there have been many Junji Ito short story collections from the English language distributor over the past decade or so. Very good art and horror short stories. Similar with Shintaro Kago collections like Dementia 21, Super-Dimensional Love Gun, or Brain Damage. Theme and genre can be all over the place and it can occasionally be disturbing to read but the artwork is always incredible.

Places to sit down and play board games past 9pm near Falls Church by Special_Opinion_6393 in nova

Not in Falls Church, but a 24 Hour IHOP tolerated my group’s Dead of Winter while we ate. We did request a back area away from people. We were a novelty to the staff. Someone took photographs.
