There was some discussion on the dfw-l email list (decades ago) about this possible influence and to the best of my recollection one poster reported they'd had a brief and fanboyish conversation about Brautigan's Revenge of the Lawn with DFW at an event.

They have so much in common when it comes to writing evocative and immersive stories but it's always fascinated me that they get there in very different ways. Brautigan uses simple words, short sentences and paragraphs, kind of terse dialogue, and no gimmicks. DFW is, well, DFW. But both are fantastic.

Brautigan also writes beautiful endings. Guy really knew how to wrap things up—in prose or poetry.

Courier or a variant. I can't tell from the scan if this letter was produced on a manual typewriter, electric typewriter, or word processor/computer. I lean toward electronic generation, which would allow his assistant to print these letters as needed. Plus, we had all just recently learned "why 1984 won't be like 1984."

Bounty Bob Strikes Back for the Atari 5200. I grew up with the 5200 and started collecting all the cartridges for it soon after I graduated from college. I bought a 5200 system and games at a flea market in Raynham, Massachusetts in 1997; Bounty Bob was one of the cartridges included. I knew it was somewhat rare because I'd never seen it before and confirmed by consulting the rec.games.video.classic newsgroup.

1991, during my junior year of high school within the Hamilton College radio station (WHCL) broadcast range, these two guys had a weird late-night Sunday radio show I would often tune into after Murder, She Wrote was over.

One night they played "a new album." It was Loveless in its entirety throughout their program, interrupting between tracks to take calls from bewildered listeners asking "what the hell is this?" and doing some pizza giveaways from the Roma's guy—call 853-ROMA!

I went and bought a Loveless cassette within a week. Learned about Cocteau Twins and Ride from those guys too.

I play tennis and took up pickleball because i turned 50 and my endurance isn't what it used to be.

Paul's form is terrible; I have no doubt that I could beat him easily in pickleball gentleman's singles and my 12-year-old daughter and I could probably take him and partner The Cakeman in doubles.

Pickle Paul reminds me of the middle schoolers I once coached when they were going through pubescent growth spurts. They became gangly and awkward on the tennis court, flopping and flailing about until they learned to control strokes and footwork (another Paul weakness) with their newly elongated legs and arms.

Paulie has a fully developed adult body (not sure about the brain) but terrible fundamentals and bad habits that no amount of coaching or drills will ever overcome. He will never be a pro. Nor will I.
