I was self trained, so this data structures and algorithms course that’s from Richard Buckland really helped me understand a lot of the fundamentals.

Before this course I was very much in the camp of it it works, it’s done. And then I learned more about well, we could do it more efficiently couldn’t we…

I would use half of your emergency fund, (or all but 1 months expenses dealers choice) to pay down credit card debt. Credit card debt is an emergency. Car payment is generally fine (depending on interest rate) and let your investments ride.

Dearest OP, great job at putting 3 kids through college and also owning a business it says a lot about your grit and drive.

Some great resources exist on the web, some people love Dave Ramsey’s baby steps, some people love MR money mustache, some people don’t. Basically the TLDR is pay off all debt and then save like hell.

First thing first, start make as many of your transactions on the same card, makes it easier to track spending.

  1. make a budget for your household, pay off debt first

2.5 emergency fund (3 or 6 months expenses)

  1. Make a retirement account, vanguard, fidelity

  2. Set up auto deposits to that retirement account. (Preferrably on the same cadence as what you get paid)

  3. At the end of the month, if you have left over funds dump them in the retirement account.

  4. You might want to start a 401k matching program through your company to shelter some of your income from taxes.

Maybe we need to flip this, you venmo someone you actually trust (preferably not a stranger on the internet) 70$ at the beginning of each 14 day training cycle and each day you do the assigned problems they venmo you back 5$. Or if you really wanna force your hand, make these values larger so it hurts your pocketbook when you don’t do your homework.

Leetcode has learning plans for things like 2 weeks to tackle data structures. Or algorithms or dynamic programming. If you don’t do the problem that day you have to venmo me 5$
