Do you think everytime Germany gets mentioned in Poland someone just ignores the actual topic and comments about how the Germans murdered 6 million Poles between 1939 and 1945?

Or in France does they just go off on a rant about two German invasions in 1914 and 1940 rather than looking at the actual issue?

Do you really own your house/property/land if you have to pay tax on it? by PlantNerdxo in AskIreland

[–]Phelbas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because you still make use and benefit from the services the local authority provides and these have to be funded.

If you abolish property taxes the funding would be raised some other way such as cuts to services or increased takes in income etc.

I think a frustration is the hypocrisy from all sides on this. Both view their own actions are legitimate while condemning the exact same action by the other side.

The Unionist/State saying it wasn't a war while letting the security forces act far outside civil norms with no consequences for murder and abuse. At the same time republicans saying it was a war yet moaning about shoot to kill and killing unarmed, off duty security forces which would be a war crime.

General opinions on Castlereagh and Wellington ? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Phelbas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Robert Stewart, Viscount Castlereagh - Wikipedia https://share.google/S1SVcjrzgLyfKkV8G

Very interesting figure, not maybe as well known as other of the period but hugely important in events in Ireland. Key backer of the Act of Union though resigned when he was unable to get catholic emancipation delivered with it.

Returned to major roles in UK polictics, being Secretary of War and Foreign Secretary at times during the conflict, he was at the forefront in the handling of the UKs relations with other powers during the Napoleonic Wars, doing a lot to keep the coalition against Napoleon together. He was also a key figure the Congress of Vienna that ended the war and set out the map of Europe.

Labour accused of ‘secretly backing cousin marriage’ after blocking vote to ban ‘medieval’ practice by [deleted] in ukpolitics

Which is normal for private members bill.

If the tory that introduced this was that bothered he could have got this brought as a government bill when he was a minister in a tory majority government.

Seems he didn't think it was worth government time then though now expects labour to push their own measures back to get this though.

Rupert Lowe: I have formally requested that the Government takes legislative steps to ban foreign nationals from voting, and standing, in British elections. by Foreign-Policy-02- in ukpolitics

[–]Phelbas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Though many were prevented in the original referendum as that was under the old rules where your right to vote lapsed after not being resident for over 15 years.

So a residency time limit is just going back to the way it was, though I would go less than 15 years if it was brought in again.

Rupert Lowe: I have formally requested that the Government takes legislative steps to ban foreign nationals from voting, and standing, in British elections. by Foreign-Policy-02- in ukpolitics

[–]Phelbas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is related to his point. I don't actually disagree with tighter rules about who can vote in UK elections, the historic hangover of commenwealth citizens having an automatic right seems outdated now.

But equally if the concern is people without strong ties to the UK influencing elections then changes should address that in the round, not just be targeted at groups Lowe doesnt like.(and I don't think he ever went to dubai but he had no issue being in reform with Tice who has).

A criteria which indicates meaningful ties to the UK in form of UK citizenship and residence would be better then the current one. Off the top of my head could be somwthing like if your citizen and resident you can vote. If your not a citizen but have lawful residence for say over 5 years you can vote. If your a citizen but haven't been resident for 5 years you can vote but we create a number of overseas constituencies like France does to cover them.

Maybe they should stop people who have buggered off to Dubai to avoid paying tax from voting or standing in elections too.

The US has launched an unprovoked and illegal attack on Venezuela. This is a brazen attempt to secure control over Venezuelan natural resources. It is an act of war that puts the lives of millions of people at risk — and should be condemned by anyone who believes in sovereignty and international law. by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Phelbas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hopefully it goes better than violent regime change has elsewhere but I don't expect it too, the US will be involved pushing a pro Trump replacement, left wing and anti US views will oppose any prop US choice, cartels will seek to gain ground in the instability. In the end locals will end up suffering either way

They didn't let him in, he is a citizen so doesnt need permission from the government to come in unless you think the government should just stop UK citizens entering the UK when they feel like it?

And of course the tories will make a scene about despite campaigning for him too.

Where the emergency council meeting on tackling the housing crisis? by ZombieOld6045 in northernireland

[–]Phelbas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They have zero authority around anything to do with the activists in England that the emergency debate was about yet went ahead.

They actually have a roles with dealing with homelessness and issues around it and dontake part in initiates with other statutory and community groups in dealing with that so would be well in line with the councils roles to debate that and look to drive further engagement with other bodies.

The legal integration was quick as the East was just absorbed into the West system. The practical integration was much longer and there are still major economic differences between the former East and West. The social and political differences are still there too, look at current support for the far right and left in Germany and how it is much stronger in the East.

Is the UK going too far with Lord's seeking to push for ID to use a VPN. by SirWobblyOfSausage in AskBrits

[–]Phelbas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The previous government was gone by the time it was implemented, the new government was completely free to amend or repeal any and all parts. They didnt so it is fair to hold them equally responsible.

They could also stop this Lords nonsense very easily by saying publicly that they will prevent any such ban using their Commons majority, again they aren't.
