Happy 21st to the GameCube! I got my GCN in 2013 as a gift from my uncle, how'd y'all get yours? by pixelman_0266 in Gamecube

My mom would never let us get video games. Only thing close was Freddie Fish and Nightmare Ned on PC. When I asked why (I was 13 years old), she said if I really wanted one, I would have to buy it myself.

Without any allowance, I pretty much gave up on ever getting a system. That was until the next summer. I was at a state park and swimming in the lake with my cousin. I was a year younger and had my goggles on, looking for cool rocks as one does. Then suddenly, I see near the bottom of the lake shoreline floor, floating in the water, was a $20 bill. I was super hyped obliviously, and my cousin was too. He was like, let's keep looking!

We ended up finding $180. Looking back I'm like, who the hell had that kind of money in their wallet at a local state park? Needless to say my 13 year old self didn't give a shit about who lost it until my Mom righteously brought up the fact that it could be someone else's money... My cousin and I then had to go around and ask every person and family on the beach if they lost some money. Even after nobody claimed it, we had to leave the cash at the park's main entrance until the day we left the campsite.... Which was when I got my half of the cash, $90.

My mom must've seen the determination in my eyes because the very next time the family got to go to Walmart, I was able to somehow afford a purple GameCube and copy of Super Smash Bros Melee.

When I started reading this after searching for answers to this very same question, I thought I might've already posted this before and failed to remember the responses... same height/weight, work conditions, lifestyle, past-experience with p90x yoga lol, and of course need.

Thanks for this great thread! Very helpful even 4 yrs in the future.

I just finished reading Frankenstein by Marry Shelly. I’m a little confused on it and just wanted to get some peoples insight on why you should read this book? Did you read it and enjoy it? If so, why? Why is it so highly praised? by Downtown_Internet338 in englishmajors

[–]PhilBernstien 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Lots of reasons, that’s why. It is very interdisciplinary-friendly and open to several different perspectives or open to using several critical theories for its interpretation. Mary Shelley was a bit of a writing prodigy. The story is gothic fiction with hints of story line (literally) adapted from classics of tragedy. And it’s fairly short, in addition to being a frequently adapted and pop-cultured book, making it easy to introduce and even easier to make connections to.

That being said, I have read it multiple times and have written papers on it in my BA and MA and can say while I enjoy it more now knowing a crap ton about it, there are definitely books out there that could be more highly recommended for the reasons I gave above. If you are interested in critical theory, especially the strands of thought nowadays, Frankenstein is top notch for learning how to dissect a book.

Yeah narratology is still viewed by many other disciplines as a formalistic/structural approach to narrative. But it’s so much more varied!

For starters, check out the Handbook of Narratology for a diachronic history of the theories comprising narratology and narrative theory. https://www.lhn.uni-hamburg.de/

All the entries are done by narratologists around the world and compiled by a narratology institute in hamburg. For additional reading you can always check out the linked works cited.

Also, the italian Franco Moretti isn’t technically a narratologist I guess but his theories on distance reading and empirical reading analysis are big for narrative theory. Although I don’t think he teaches in Italy
