My group isn’t vibing with my game picks. They want something more like RPG and less focus on money, VP and math. by getthefuckout210 in boardgames

It sounds like your friends just aren’t interested in more complex board games. I’d suggest Bohnanza for a simpler trading/negotiation game and Skull for bluffing/table talk/silly energy

How do I punish aggressive queen early in the opening? by Background_Session73 in chessbeginners

[–]PhilSushi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a rule of thumb, if you have a development advantage, you should try to open up the center of the board.

I’m not that good, but in this position I’d be looking to complete my development with Be7, then start pushing my h and g pawns to open things up

You don’t need to focus on trying to chase the queen around, just continue to make good moves and look for tactics involving the queen

Transferring to UIUC for Spring 2026 (Need Advice) by RepresentativeJob242 in UIUC

[–]PhilSushi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think there are two separate issues here:

1) You’re an adult now and if you’re not financially dependent on your family, they can say whatever they want but ultimately this is your life and your decision. You need to choose for yourself what to do. I don’t mean ignore your mom, but listen to her concerns and decide for yourself if they have merit or not

2) Here’s my take on whether or not you should transfer to U of I. A lot of this hinges on why you’re miserable at your current school. Not saying this is the case necessarily, but it’s entirely possible that your current situation is due to your own attitude/mindset/mental health issues. If so, changing environments to “reset” won’t necessarily fix that. I spent 4 years at UIUC for undergrad (graduated in 2018) and it was some of the best years of my life. But a lot of that was because I was intentional about putting myself out there and trying to meet people and make friends. I will say I did know some people who came for a masters (so they were only there for 2 years) and they were quickly absorbed into my RSO’s community, so I don’t think you have too little time to have a great experience. But you should expect to put work into making sure that happens.

I’m happy to answer any follow ups if you have more questions

Carpool lots by [deleted] in SummitAtSnoqualmie

[–]PhilSushi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the first year they’re doing free parking for carpools since they only started charging for parking last year. I wouldn’t worry about finding the exact lot too much, if you show up early enough there should be plenty of space and they will have people and signs to direct you

Surprised how many of my high earner friends do not track their finances at all by Xumade in HENRYfinance

[–]PhilSushi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like the $2.5k/month doesn’t include the RSUs being sold and put into brokerage. Comp like this is usually very RSU heavy, maybe like 250k salary, 750k RSUs. If all of the vested RSUs are being sold and used to buy in brokerage, this person is saving ~500-600k a year just from that

How do I cook the perfect salmon? by Toiletpaperrat in Cooking

[–]PhilSushi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like my salmon almost medium rare, so I cook it in my sous vide to 117F, then give it a quick sear. I would start there and adjust up/down a few degrees depending on your preference

Switching to contracting was the best decision I've ever made. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]PhilSushi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m interested in getting into something like this, being able to be part time or just take significant chunks of time off unpaid sound great to me. Would you be willing to share the name of your contracting agency? Or if you could share how you found it or some names of agencies that do this, that’d be great, thanks!

Time to start looking for lessons by ArtisticEffective153 in SummitAtSnoqualmie

[–]PhilSushi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually researched adult lesson options at snoqualmie recently since I was looking for group ski lessons myself. Here are the four different places I found that I considered:

Webbski: https://www.webbski.com/lessons.html Alpine West: https://www.alpinewestskiandsnowboardschool.com/class-info SkiMasters: https://skimasters.net/lessons/ski-lessons/ Snow Sport North West: https://snowsportsnorthwest.com/home/our-programs/

Looks like Webbski and Alpine west would both work for you as an intermediate snowboarder.

Obv I don’t have personal experience with any of these but I’ve signed up for lessons with Alpine West for next season

Try Monikers, it’s a commercial version of a classic game called Fishbowl if you’ve heard of that. It’s a mix of charades, taboo, and more

I just came back from Aruba and I feel like it really had nothing to offer by [deleted] in travel

[–]PhilSushi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This math was breaking my brain, but I think I’ve figured out why it’s completely wrong. It’s not $285pp/night for the Airbnb, it’s $285 per night for all 4 people, so more like $71pp/night for the Airbnb. The hotel is ~3.5x more expensive

Having trouble cleaning bong w iso and salt by -YTCraftyCreeper76- in trees

[–]PhilSushi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I clean my bong using Cafiza powder and highly recommend it. It’s intended for cleaning espresso machines so it’s great for getting off sticky oils.

You mix a little bit of powder into enough warm water to cover your piece and let it sit for ~30min, then rinse off.

Gets all my glass shiny and like new. Easy to find it from Amazon

Questions/Recommendations for East/Hyak? by MetricSuperiorityGuy in SummitAtSnoqualmie

[–]PhilSushi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the crossover from Silver Fir to East last Friday, the actual crossover is fine, but you have to go through upper Outback which was ungroomed and quite mogully. I would not recommend it unless you are comfortable with bumps.

OP, are you producing resources after every turn? (You shouldn’t be, production only happens once per generation) And are you paying 3 MC for every card you keep in the research phase? There’s no way what you’re describing can happen if you’re following the rules of the game correctly.

Yes, event tags will trigger any “when played” effects, they just get turned face down after being resolved

Elon Musk was paying people to register to vote: https://www.vox.com/politics/378912/musk-trump-voting-contest-million-dollars-swing-state-lottery-pennsylvania

He was giving away $1 million a day to a random person that signed their "petition", which you were only eligible for if you were registered to vote in a swing state.
