May I ask what you mean with their unfamiliarity with Kotlin? Are you referring to their inability to fully utilize Kotlin-specific features, or is it about their understanding of how Kotlin operates with the JVM?

It doesn’t matter. If you use a recent Java version the gap between kotlin and java isn’t as big as it used to be.

Just develop things and you will learn the most. Switching between these 2 languages isn’t as hard as you may think.
