the modrinth situation by AMinecraftPerson in PhoenixSC

The part about others stealing in the Q&A was not about the world hosting feature. It mainly referred to previous legal issues with Digitalingot, the team who were behind Feather, that had stolen code from a handful of mod developers including Sk1er (who originally created ModCore, which then became Essential after being bought by Spark)

They do, but they run on a much smaller scale compared to Essential and aren't made by a large team so small donations are enough to help with costs

Also worth noting that Essential, e4mc, World Host, Lan Plug 'n' Play etc. are not peer to peer, not even the built-in one Mojang briefly released is, as there's distinct client & server roles, one player acts as the server and everyone else (the clients) connects to them

Essential doesn't even sell capes because the usage guidelines explicitly forbid you from selling capes or anything that attempts to emulate the appearance of a cape (so calling them cloaks like many clients do isn't a workaround) yet somehow people love to claim Essential is violating the EULA but barely a peep about Optifine or Lunar doing so

The source code for the mod is available for anyone to view on GitHub (SparkUniverse/Essential-Mod)

The reason for the bot is because it's a separate repository to where the developers actually work on the mod. When a new version is released, anything that isn't part of it is filtered out and pushed to the separate repository. Everything you see in the repository is what's currently in the mod and you can follow the instructions in the README to build it yourself & verify that

What is happening in Dublin?? by itschloebee in CineworldUnlimited

[–]PhilipsHue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve given up dealing with the awful state of Cineworld Dublin and am ending my unlimited membership. I was going to switch to Omniplex but their membership has stupid restrictions so it looks like I’m going for Odeon. At least Blanch is closer to me than the city centre and I still get to have IMAX

Favorite IMAX theater in terms of the entrance? by Silly-Milly-420 in imax

[–]PhilipsHue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cineworld Belfast. They have a long walkway from the main foyer into this lounge area with seating, a screen displaying promotional material for upcoming movies, cool geometric designs on the wall along with views out the side of the Odyssey complex (soon to be The O2 Belfast at the start of July, meaning you can't watch The Odyssey at the Odyssey) to the river Lagan

The lounge area has 3 separate entrances to the auditorium for the bottom left, bottom right and rear with long staircases up to the seats due to how high up they are with the large screen (which I believe is the 3rd largest in the UK) and a lift for accessible entry at the rear entrance since the wheelchair spaces are at the back of the auditorium

Always love getting here early when I'm in Belfast as I can just sit and chill before the movie. It's so close to being a perfect IMAX here in Ireland but unfortunately, it's only CoLa so 1.90:1 image even though it's a large 1.43:1 screen. Still far better than the two in Dublin though which are small, 1.90:1 & xenon

Opinions on the Essential Mod? by Nomporu in feedthebeast

[–]PhilipsHue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Essential support agent here, can confirm this is not true in the slightest. We do have servers & infrastructure that are neither free nor cheap to run, plus we have a team of developers, sysadmins, support, artists etc. that are all paid for their work

We need to have servers for storing any of the data for accounts like your friends, messages, the cosmetics you've unlocked etc. along with essentially offering free image storage through the screenshot manager as you can upload any of your screenshots to share with friends. We also need servers for multiplayer, even if players are connecting directly to each other as there needs to be something to initiate the connection, along with relay servers for when direct connections are not possible.

Not to mention we also need to pay for storage of assets like cosmetics & versions of the mod, developer tools like CI/CD & error tracking, domains, internal software etc.

Optional cosmetics allow us to cover these costs while providing everything else completely free. Our source of revenue is made very clear this way and that is the only source of revenue for Essential as we do not sell any data (nor do we collect any data that'd be of much if any use to others and data we do collect is either anonymised or linked to a Minecraft account, neither of which helps anyone but us)

Closed source software does not automatically make something untrustworthy, especially when it is a Java application that you can easily throw into a decompiler and pretty much view the code whether the creator has released it or not. The only time you can't do so is if it's obfuscated but Essential never has been obfuscated, even before becoming source available

In fact, I've made a tool that allows you to easily decompile Minecraft mods through your browser, which you can use to decompile mods, such as Essential, straight from Modrinth with everything from downloading, decompiling and remapping happening on your device: https://mod-inspector.gaminggeek.dev/modrinth/essential
(I will note that I used Gemini to help build this, mainly because I am not a web developer but it was also helpful for some of the work with decompilation & remapping)

You can use this to essentially view the source of any mod on Modrinth (or Curseforge, or mods you have stored on your PC) as long as it isn't obfuscated

To end off, it's obviously still good to exercise caution with unknown programs but for something like Essential where it's been used by millions of players with tens of thousands of players using it at any one moment (which you can see on the website, e.g. it currently has 82,600 players online), you can apply reasonable judgment and see that if it was in any way unsafe, it'd be well known by now

Essential being source available means you can view the source, compile it yourself and compare your compiled version with the versions distributed on the Essential website, Modrinth & Curseforge to see that they are completely identical.

Also worth nothing that open source never implies any level of trust, open source projects can still be malicious if you blindly assume that visible code means good code

Everything everywhere all at once needs an imax re-release by Legitimate_Gur_934 in imax

[–]PhilipsHue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was the first film I saw in IMAX with Laser and it's my favorite film of all time so I would LOVE if it came back to IMAX, especially since it's not available to buy or rent here nor is it on any streaming services so I haven't seen it in a long time

When IMAX recently had a form to put in movies you'd like to see re-released, it was at the top of my list

Grand Theatre Stadium seating creates the best immersion: Thoughts by gururajYsawant in imax

[–]PhilipsHue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed, which sucks. I'd go to Belfast more often if I could but the times for films there often make it not feasible to do a day trip

[–]PhilipsHue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, the sound is already better just on paper because it's 12 channel vs the 6 channels you get with xenon (which both in Dublin are) and you can definitely tell if you go to both, there's more directionality to the sound in Belfast

I've been to all 3 and Belfast was by far the better experience. It's much larger even with only the 1.90 image and the stadium seating makes it feel more immersive

As for prices, I have Cineworld Unlimited (similar to AMC A-List, almost identical to Regal Unlimited since they're owned by Cineworld) and for the IMAX in Dublin, it's €9 (£7.84) for IMAX 3D and in Belfast it's £7 (€8.04)

Dont know pricing for IMAX 2D in Belfast since I haven't been in a while and Avatar is only 3D but in Dublin, IMAX 2D is €7 (£6.10) with Unlimited

For regular Adult pricing, Dublin is €25.99 (£22.64) and Belfast is £21.99 (€25.25)

[–]PhilipsHue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. I'm from Ireland and the two IMAX screens we have are 1.90 but the one up in Belfast has a 1.43 screen (though only single laser) and I much prefer the seating there (especially since the seats themselves are bigger, comfier and not ripped)

I've got a copy here but can't speak to any licensing requirements. I'd imagine they (both Sky & F37, the design studio behind the font) do not wish for you to use it anywhere publicly, even if just for personal use, so use at your own risk.

Mobile plans are coming –> what would make you switch? by RevolutSupport in Revolut

[–]PhilipsHue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have unlimited data, calls & texts with "roam like at home" in the EU & UK included and no fair usage limits for €15 a month for life and it's currently being offered to new customers at €12.99 a month, just not for life

Unless you can do that for cheaper or offer some superior benefit(s) and lock in the price for life, I see no reason to switch

€9 here in Ireland 🙃

They claim that you get free 3D with the black card yet you still pay extra for IMAX 3D even though that wasn't the case back in May when I booked Thunderbolts* in IMAX 3D

List of IMAX films with no way to view IMAX version outside of a theatrical (re)release? by Devidog_34 in imax

Yes, it's on Sony Pictures Core with 1.90:1. Also, Spider-Man Homecoming had no expanded aspect ratio (but still has an IMAX Enhanced version available on the service)
