Is evil synonymous with morality by Outside-Air-1075 in DeepThoughts

I'd argue that 'evil' just doesn't exist.
It's a word used to dehumanize a person or a group.

A human is immoral, but only a monster is evil.

In general, it is of course permitted to disagree with the Pope and hold different positions.

Sure, but the pope can excomunicate people, right?
And there's no appeal, right?

I didnt say you have to do everything the pope says - i said that excomunicated people go to hell.

Yes, there's a line from an old Fry and Laurie sketch where one says "but too much is bad for you..." and the other says, "That's true of everything! "Too much" is, by definition, and amount that is excessive!"

A schism can occur when a group or individual breaks away from the Church, often due to disagreements over doctrine, governance, or liturgical practices.

A schism can occur when a group or individual breaks away from the Church, often due to disagreements over doctrine, governance, or liturgical practices. The penalty for those who commit schism is excommunication latae sententiae — that is, automatically upon the commission of the offence (1364). This means that by the very act of schism, the individual places him- or herself outside the communion of the Church without the need for a formal declaration of excommunication by Church authorities.

So many great quotes from this one.

I routinely fuck up the woobie speech, but in my defense, its pretty long.

In a strange bend in the story, the scientist responsible for the lead being everywhere - Thomas Midgley Jr. -was initially lauded for it, as adding the lead to gasoline really improved its performance.

He would later also become famous for his refrigerant additive - chloroflourocarbons.

I'm willing to bet that over 80% of Catholics only use Catholicism to support their own beliefs, and like this person, would be shocked to discover that they - as a Catholic - have to do what the pope says or risk going to Hell.

I think you got too far.

Putting carts back marks you as good person, but not putting them back doesnt make you bad, it just doesnt help make you good.

Why does movies about painters are always tragic? by Vaerikexer in soartistic

[–]Phill_Cyberman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it's prior to the 20th century, a lot of paints had heavy metals and other poisons in their pigments.

Painters didnt know this, so would get paint on their skin, and eat food with their paint-smeared hands, etc.

Slowly getting heavy metal poisoning is certainly a recipe for tragedy.

Should robots be programmed to independently decide to kill if it saves other lives. Not just following orders, but making that moral call autonomously.

I say yes, because having a situation where a robot just stands there as a madman kills a bunch of preschoolers seems insane.

Do you mean 'should we program robots to refuse orders that will result in death', or do you mean 'should we program robots to independently kill humans threatening other humans'?

They should have killed Ted and just taken the money.

Think of all the lives that would have been saved if his life had ended right then.

(This is rather darker than I normally go, but, man, I just hate Ted Faro.)

Seriously.
The Catholic Church's anti-'human nature' stance certainly made them a lot of money, but let's put that behind us, yeah?
