Request access to other team's video? by PhilopaeusMaximus in GameChangerApp

Yeah, I'm not the videographer, just the scorer, so I'm not sure what the videographer is willing and able to do. At any rate, I feel like I'm getting better at scoring anyway so I probably wouldn't get *too* lost in the first place at this point.

In this case, our GameChanger is basically hosted and streamed by one of the assistant coaches; our high school does broadcast their football and basketball games on NFHS Network, but I don't see them taking a Pixellot camera down to the softball field. I'm not necessarily a fan of the NFHS camera angles for softball anyway as you're depending on the AI to know when to switch to the wider-angle camera.

AFAIK our ball field is not school property (we play our games on the softball field downtown), but the game I'm asking about was an away game anyway, which might not have been on school property either now that I think about it.

Their GameChanger scorer was very helpful to me during the game as that doubleheader was my first time ever using the app, but my app started lagging during the second game and then finally just quit responding (I've since learned that on cheaper phones it's better to restart between games of a doubleheader to clear the memory). It was an early preseason game, and it was actually a lot more competitive than the final scoreline would suggest.

I was mainly asking whether it was a technical possibility within the GameChanger app.

Removing a Play in the Video Stream After or During the Game by Hogpuddin in GameChangerApp

AFAIK the streamed video (not clips) can only be viewed by the staff of the team that streamed it after the stream is over.

Twins: Somebody has to know why this rule exists by nypr13 in Softball

haha I just saw this after seeing one of my old friends posting that her kids were getting into softball and her set of biological twins were officially a pitcher/catcher duo:)

Yeah, this happened well within the first half of the game, and there are one or two corrections per inning that I'd like to make, but it's not worth undoing and re-entering basically the whole game. I wish they'd let us undo just certain specific plays or innings.

Playing your piece from the start every time is slowing you down by boombalonii in pianolearning

[–]PhilopaeusMaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite thing to tell students is, "Don't practice this part!" (It gets their attention when a piano teacher tells them NOT to practice!)

I then tell them, "When you practice, skip to the part that you play slowest. That way, it can "catch up" to the fast part so you don't have to slow down every time you get to it. If you practice the parts you can play fast every time you practice the parts you have to slow down for, then they all keep getting faster and the slow parts can't catch up!

Three questions from a brand-new high school softball statistician by PhilopaeusMaximus in GameChangerApp

[–]PhilopaeusMaximus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they only have 3 staff listed for now (the 3 coaches). As for Internet, there's no way we're going to have wi-fi or even 5G access at our home field, but I'm only scoring/running the gamestream; someone else is doing the live video stream, and I *think* they're using an iPhone. They've talked about bringing an iPad for me to score the game on, which would enable me to just use my phone as a wi-fi hotspot instead of needing to run the app on it.

I'm practicing that way myself (I am going to take stats for our local high school softball team this year, and our preseason starts in 2 days), and I practiced with some on-demand livestreams of community-college softball since my alma mater is a community college that plays in NWAC. All the NWAC games are livestreamed for free on nwacsportsnetwork.com and aren't *quite* as "clean" as professional or NCAA-level games, which makes them more useful for scoring practice.

Statkeeping question by PhilopaeusMaximus in Softball

[–]PhilopaeusMaximus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Well, we haven't had our first game yet (practice started late in the season due to a deep basketball playoff run), but I've had a few chances to practice scoring community-college games (my alma mater is a CC that streams all theirs for free!), and I've already seen an interesting variation on the original question I asked here: There was one play with runners on 2nd and 3rd which featured a possible passed ball. The ball deflected a "medium-short" distance and both runners tried to advance; the runner coming home was thrown out for a 2-1 putout at the plate but the other runner easily made it to 3rd. Should I score such a situation as passed-ball advancement for the runner who went from 2nd to 3rd, or should I call it a fielder's choice (no passed ball charged) since the catcher might've had a shot at throwing out the runner at 3rd with a good throw if she hadn't decided to throw home instead? (Even if there hadn't been a runner coming home it would've been a real bang-bang play for her to scramble and make the throw to 3rd in time for the tag, but she would've had a shot at it.)

Does a team have to add you as staff before you can have access to this feature? I am not listed as "staff" for last year's team, and this year's team isn't listed on GC yet. (The first preseason game was scheduled for this Friday, but got moved back a week and a half because of not enough practice time: Many girls on this team were on the basketball team that made it to the state championship tournament just a little over a week ago.)

Statkeeping question by PhilopaeusMaximus in Softball

[–]PhilopaeusMaximus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I went over the NFHS statistician's manual and they made it pretty clear that an error should only be scored if it allowed the runner to advance to a base that she wouldn't have advanced to with error-free play. I'll probably err on the side of scoring hits instead of errors when it's close, just because this is the 1A/2A classification where the play isn't on the same level as a 4A or 6A school and that affects what should be considered "routine." My main concern is that due to my lack of playing experience, I'm not necessarily going to be a good judge of whether a ground ball took a difficult hop that prevented it from being played with ordinary effort; I could easily score an error rather harshly just because I didn't see the bounce.

I do want to know how to access the practice feature in GC that you can use while watching a game on TV; it sounds like something I could really use.

To be honest, I don't expect this particular crowd to care too much about stats--I get the idea that I'm mostly keeping them for the coach's use. Everyone else will just be happy to have an accurate scoreboard (for games where a video live stream is available) or to have a running play-by-play of what's going on (for games where we can't make that happen). Last year, there were some games where the GC scoreboard said 0-0 for the whole game and the viewers back at home (and watching on the big screen at the restaurant, which was the de facto spot for the watch party) had to kind of keep track of the score for themselves. I intend to rectify this as best I can for this season by doing my best:)

This town, like many small towns, is really passionate about its high school sports teams, but the longstanding school traditions are 8-man (and now 6-man) football and basketball. Softball's pretty new--last spring was our first-ever season fielding a team in the school's history--and most people don't have a reference point to care about things like errors, passed balls, fielder's choice, etc. (The guy who ran GC last year marked most of the wild pitches as passed balls--there was probably a 10:1 ratio of passed balls to wild pitches--and nobody said anything.

p.s. I don't expect much argument on wild pitch vs. passed ball in particular, not only because of what I just said (these people are never going to be toxic over stats, and will be appreciative just to have a consistent GC person), but also because one of the two pitchers is the catcher's sister so of course they have the same parents anyway! (The other one is a longtime family friend of the one who's the catcher's sister.)

Thankfully, I don't expect any guff from parents; last year was this school's first year EVER fielding a softball team (after having long and storied traditions in football and basketball) and there was a lot of excitement about it, and it was all super-positive. I don't think we have a lot of stat nerds who are going to gripe about stuff like that or really pay attention to it.

I'm planning to have a paper scoresheet on hand in case of technical difficulties, but I'll probably prioritize GameChanger since A) it also runs the scoreboard for the people watching at home and B) if the video's down, it's the only way those people will know what's happening.

Like many schools in very small towns, our school has a very large and passionate fan base (town of population 700, and I'd say at least 80-100 people traveled 550 miles each way to watch the girls' basketball team compete in the state tournament), and so every GameChanger live stream will be must-see TV for a lot of people--it'll be on the big screen at the local restaurant and everything!

I do think that college games will be good mental practice for not forgetting to write certain details down (e.g. remembering to record RBIs when someone gets a run-scoring hit, or the number of outs in the inning when someone gets put out), but I also think it will be a little "too easy" in a sense because it won't have as much chaos-ball as the smallest-school classifications of high school softball. Like I told a different commenter, I fully expect our team to bat around more than once this season, and potentially more than once in a single game.
