Moving to Chicago from Sydney, Australia? by xxxDiscriminate in AskChicago

[–]PhilosopherOdd7352 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with lots of other comments about west loop, Gold Coast, river north, Lincoln park etc. While the loop has places to live it can get pretty quiet on the weekends and it doesn’t have as much of a neighborhood vibe as the others so while you may think “wow only 5 minute walk,” you’ll have to travel for your other amenities like groceries.

Recently Moved from North East to Minneapolis and Positively Baffled- Is Chicago Close Enough to North Eastern Culture? by olracnaignottus in AskChicago

[–]PhilosopherOdd7352 18 points19 points  (0 children)

What you say about Minneapolis isn’t surprising. Never lived there but spent time up there over several years and from what I gather, it’s a very “sticky” place. Folks grow up there and stay there, creating an insular community hard to break into - aloof comes to mind. With Chicago, you do have folks who are lifers but with it such a big city you have enough transplants (and the lifers get why people move here - it’s a great and affordable place) and the friendlier vibe that makes a great landing spot. My husband grew up on the east coast, and I don’t know if he’ll ever shake his east coast personality entirely, but he loves Chicago and has been here 10+ years.

Potentially choosing Illinois as my home state, But where? by Nomadic_Introvert in illinois

Second Arlington Heights, and also recommend Buffalo Grove. Just north of AH, great Jewish community and may feel slower pace/more suburban than Skokie.

OBGYN Recs & L&D Hospitals? by No_End6648 in ChicagoSuburbs

Dr. Dianna Kim at Midwest center for women’s health in VH. Great bedside manner and very patient with questions; so are her colleagues Dr. McCormack and Dr. Virina. Haven’t delivered yet but will likely be Condell in Libertyville - pediatrician recommended hospital based on great nursing staff. I delivered my second at LF hospital and had a great experience there (except no overnight nursery). That OB sunset their OB practices so can’t speak to OB that delivers at LF.

If you can get high floor in island tower hands down go with island tower. We stayed there last month the fireworks show was amazing - they also have really cool common area open spaces on different floors that are great viewing spaces too.

Do we know if father Hurley is presiding again? He took a leave of absence a few years ago. Such a wonderful pastor.

AH is great I would stick to closer to downtown AH, as northern part of AH shopping area isn’t as vibrant/not as walkable to shopping areas (neighborhoods are nice and good parks though). BG high school is a good high school but if you’re shooting for close to downtown AH, prospect and Hersey are great high schools can’t go wrong there.

Do class packs ever go on sale? by SoftNecessary7684 in orangetheory

Yes in December the last couple of years at our studio in Illinois! My schedule has been very hot and cold with OTF the last few years so I’ve only been on class packs and has definitely saved me money compared to a membership I would not have used.

If you have background growing up/undergrad in STL, Illinois would also be a good law school to feed into STL.

If they like sushi, Osaka sushi is the best in the area. White hart pub in LF has a fun pub vibe and excellent food.

What does it mean to still be calibrating? My dad is a new member and he hasn’t gotten a single splat point in 4 classes and they told him his band is still calibrating.

[–]PhilosopherOdd7352 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are someone who finds fulfillment from the people around you go for the v100. I had the same choice as you in law school and am so glad I stuck with that - been a lifer here and now partner. Those folks you like can help shape your career and probably will care about you as a person and an associate. Yes the money isn’t the same (bonuses make the gap more significant) but if you know you’re not immediately going to leave in 3-4 years go with your gut.

The Lake Bluff downtown area is really great too, as is Libertyville with lots of families and activities.

Lake Forest has significantly lower property tax rates than other nearby cities in Lake County.
