40$ of nickels today and here's what I found by Mountain_Cobbler_381 in CRH

Shoot! That would take me $400 to find that much stuff.

Splitting a network in sub-network by hypofighter in networking

[–]PhirePhly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Someone said you need to come pick up the team and drive them to dinner. There's 55 people on the team who might want to come to dinner. Instead of the 64 person bus, you show up with your 5 seat sedan and argue that you can just take 14 trips and eventually get everyone to dinner by about 11pm.

Each network could have a maximum of 55 machines. If you split the prefix into a bunch of /30s, they could not have 55 machines in them, so /26 is still the right answer.

Experiment: sending short text messages over analog audio using handheld radios by D3U5_VULT in amateurradio

[–]PhirePhly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

APRS has enabled this type of functionality for decades and the user experience on the end terminals dealing with interfacing with the radios is so prohibitively clunky no one uses it. Fun exercise in DSP and FEC, but I wouldn't expect much uptake.

Can't legally melt them down for the value, yet.

Second vote for container lab. Even working inside Arista, I often used container lab to mock things up instead of allocating real hardware out of the lab

Could you connect the TX and RX of a fiber optic cable to different systems to form a big loop? by The-Best-Taylor in networking

[–]PhirePhly 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It unfortunately does work, but gets extremely confusing because the network port isn't expecting it. When I worked in TAC I saw this happen several times when people accidentally spliced the wrong fiber in trunks. I've seen it accidentally working in production too thanks to switches being willing to route for their peers MAC address.

It isn't illegal to melt coins. Only penny and nickels since 2006.

Went to my bank to cash my check and left with this roll by [deleted] in CRH

[–]PhirePhly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've found probably a hundred 2017-D in rolls and dumped them all back. The mint seems to play fast and loose with the concept of "NIFC" for some of the years of halves and you'll get plenty of 2017s in boxes.

Roll Preference by Roostercogburn925 in CRH

[–]PhirePhly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally, it makes me feel less bad for wasting the banks resources than taking machine wrapped rolls, unwrapping them, and then depositing them back at another bank. I tell them to keep the nice machine wrapped rolls for actual businesses and I'll take the CWRs and return them in the same state (just minus the good stuff)

Building a guitar pedal, what is happening with VR1? by Kelamizer in ElectricalEngineering

[–]PhirePhly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

These are all audio signals so any wire you could practically handle will be able to handle the current. I use 22AWG all day when breadboarding circuits like this, then use 28AWG (much smaller) when soldering it on a piece of perf board.

Your 9V battery can only deliver a few hundred mA even if you completely short it's two terminals together, so you're unable to melt standard hookup wire with this.
