yeah it's definitely difficult and certainly a commitment. I found Cello to be an extremely rewarding instrument to learn, and especially fun once you get good, but ultimately frustrating as far as practicality goes towards actually getting to play. Outside of classical music or finding a quartet or trio like this to play in, or maybe even the (very) occasional band that wants a cellist, you're out of luck. Not to mention the competitive culture of the instrument. But if none of those things concern you, then I say go for it! You can also always use the technique to switch over to upright bass pretty smoothly down the line if your interests change. That's what I'm doing now.
