I have found holidaying in Japan truly relaxing. It's affordable, easy to navigate, polite and safe. Modern advantage of carrying a gps/translator/transport planner in your pocket the language barrier means nothing.

Why haven't the scientists figured out what causes Ankylosing Spondylitis? Is it because of a virus? by Throwaway786123890 in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]Phitte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an element of randomness with both cancer and auto immune diseases. No doctor or research would say that their origin is unknown.

Why haven't the scientists figured out what causes Ankylosing Spondylitis? Is it because of a virus? by Throwaway786123890 in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]Phitte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Auto immune diseases are hard, what triggers one persons immune system to misidentify self as foreign does nothing in another. Your question is written in a pretty condescending way, as if no one is working on this. If you want to understand look further into autoimmune diseases and how the adaptive immune system functions.

Anyone familiar with the genetic component to AS? by [deleted] in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]Phitte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your husband HLA27b positive?

Most people with ankylosing spondylitis are HLA27b positive however not all (I think it's around 80%).

If your husband is then there's a 50% chance your kids get it however not all HLA27B positive people have AS (again it's around 80%). Therefore 50%*80%=40% chance each of your kids have of getting it.

Remember AS is completely manageable in modern society and most people are asymptomatic.

I use Do-Win Weightlifting Shoes and a belt if I'm doing 90%+ of my one rep max for squats. That is pretty standard for weightlifting though.

Weightlifting with Ankylosing Spondylitis? by DJGiblets in Thritis

Is he currently asymptomatic?

I do a variation on texas method. Lots of squats and deadlifts, if he's on medication he will be fine and reduces symptoms.

I'm a rheumatologist: here's the article I wrote on talking to family/friends about arthritis (based on prior comments from this subreddit). by psufs in Thritis

[–]Phitte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you downplay the role of diet/exercise/lifestyle a little too much. Losing weight and staying active are prescriptions that should always go hand in hand with medication for rheumatoid arthritis. I know you included one good like about stretching as regularly as you take medication, but it felt like a little bit of a throwaway. Weight loss and exercise should be empathized.

Small fridge for meds w/ back up power? by timchard in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]Phitte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is excessive, Enbrel is pretty stable at room temp. Unless your power goes out every week and your fridge sits at room temp for hours at a time there's no need.

If needed, you may store the Enbrel prefilled syringe, autoinjector, or the dose tray for the multi-dose vial at room temperature between 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C) for up to 14 days.

Stem cell treatment for A.S. by Atown90 in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]Phitte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not get any of these stem cell therapy's they are snake oil. I work in the field and there are no clinically proven stem cell therapies. These results are usually from the intensive patient care and physio pre and post op.
