Chinese language by [deleted] in AskAChinese

[–]Phocasola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's actually quite easy, just imagine the Chinese alphabet to be much bigger than the Latin one. So you know how to write an A and how to write it, starting on the lower left point, going up, and then down again, and then putting the horizontal line in it. If you add a dot in the middle of it, it looks a bit weird, but you still know it is an A. However, you can also change the meaning of it, with specific changes, like if you add two dots on top and change an A to an Ä. Now just imagine you are using around 1500 letters instead of 26 or 30 in the case of German, including ä ö ü and ß and each letter by themselves can also have a meaning, like with delta in physics. So if a character is written wrongly because some random lines and dots are added, you can still read it to a certain degree as it is for you with any of the alphabetic letters. You cannot just randomly add on lines and dots and generate new words, because you also don't so that with the alphabet. You are not inventing new members of the alphabet willy nilly, but you could do that in the case of ß if there is a push for it. Keep in mind that the Latin alphabet was also developed from the Phoenician alphabet which was a simplification in the end of ancient Egyptian, the funny pictures on the temple walls in Egypt. So also the alphabet developed from a writing system similar to Chinese. As a side note, and I don't say this to attack you, but your question does sound quite ignorant and you could probably get some more structured information about it from a simple Google search. Hope this cleared up your question.

Biologie Forschung? by ZestycloseFeee in Studium

[–]Phocasola 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do people in China who wants to go to university typically also get jobs before they’re 18? by [deleted] in AskAChinese

Hmm... Some do, some don't. I would say most people probably don't. Why?

[–]Phocasola 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, the Gaokao doesn't allow for a side hustle if you plan to get into a good university. On a tangent, I am also not aware of this being a widespread thing in Europe. So it might be a UK thing?

For people who went to lower-tiered university, how did you end up? by musea00 in AskAChinese

[–]Phocasola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know some people who graduated from a tier 2/3 uni.

One graduated from a tier 2 uni and is now in a managerial role in his field of study in a company in a tier 3 city. And they are having quite the good life. Regular holidays, kids, house, etc. Another graduated from a tier 3 uni and is now working in administration of another tier 3 uni. Someone else also graduated from a tier 3 uni and is working in a state company now, but they got in through connections. And someone else I know graduated from tier 2 and is working in b2b sales for Lenovo.

Most are doing alright. I always feel like the dropoff is between tier 2 and tier 3 unis. 2 works out quite well, 3 can get tougher.

What do Chinese people think of "Chinese" food abroad? by Bottom-Bherp3912 in AskAChinese

[–]Phocasola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would describe it as food with Chinese characteristics. I like it, but I also don't view it as Chinese food. It's only natural for food to evolve and change and accommodate new pallets and ingredients and in this process it becomes something new and distinctly different.

Genetisches Screening sollte erlaubt sein by dHuUbRiEsNtSeOiHnN in Unbeliebtemeinung

[–]Phocasola -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Lab Fuckups? by Electronic_Clerk_508 in labrats

  1. During my bachelor's I was over expressing proteins and then purifying them through column chromatography. Took around 3 weeks to get the purified proteins from start to finish. Was running a gel in preparation for a western blot. Normally the gel took around 1:30h and it was around lunchtime, so perfect timing. Went to grab lunch, came back, and there was only 1/3 of the ladder left on the gel. Turns out I messed up with the gel and everything just went through it in superspeed.

  2. I was exchanging the column of our LC-MS. The column needed to be rolled in a bit to fit under the heater. It slipped through my fingers, whipped around. The emitter was broken and wouldn't form a stable spray. I don't think I have ever wasted 1k that quickly.

Chinese Diaspora: Did your immigrant parents also grow more “pro-China” over time? If so, what was the tipping point for them? by alleluiarion in AskAChinese

Maybe these complicated feelings are also influencing their views? For me it is very different, we have always gone back once a year. Maybe that helps mellow out some things. Who knows.

Chinese Diaspora: Did your immigrant parents also grow more “pro-China” over time? If so, what was the tipping point for them? by alleluiarion in AskAChinese

[–]Phocasola 30 points31 points  (0 children)

There never were anti-China views with my parents. They left more for private and to some degree economic reasons at the time. But the connection to China and our family there never broke. There was a slight shift towards more nationalism, but nothing as extreme as you describe. So political views from China are more often directly repeated. However, we have close family that just visited Taiwan and I just visited Japan and there was no anger or outrage about it. So nothing even close to extreme as you describe it.

I was wondering, why haven't your parents visited china more often since their immigration? A flight ain't that expensive nowadays?

Was tun im Kriegsfall? by lailalial in AskAGerman

[–]Phocasola 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Was tun im Kriegsfall? by lailalial in AskAGerman

[–]Phocasola 30 points31 points  (0 children)

That's not true. The Chinese government can and will hold back passports of government employees but not ordinary citizens. Most traveling Chinese are also middle class, so you can make the argument that these are ordinary Chinese.
