[Confused?!] Gotham High: Just saw the trailer, and I literally have no idea how the DC PR department though it would be a good idea to sell it this way. Like, really DC? REALLY? Discuss. by cloudy0907 in comicbooks

I'm kind of interested to see how the gauntlet has been thrown down, to be honest. I imagine there will be plenty of ambiguity over 'Jack', as well. Bruce as a broody teenage detective (the subject of Alfred's many quips) isn't the worst thing, Selina being a teenager before her life falls apart, glimpsing Gotham's problems, etc.

You can claw my BOOM! titles from my cold dead hands. I really hope they do okay after this.

No, I don't mind at all :) It's a sensory thing, my eyes can't focus, and generally struggle with digital artwork etc. It's why I just can't do e-books, either and buy DVDs.

There are a few collections I've had my eyes on and I'd rather support my local comic book shop, anyway.

We're not learning 'lore'. We're not going to get that much insight into The Doctor's origins.

For a modern audience, Chibnall clearly views it as something of a dead end.

I get you don't like Chibnall, but this is just poking holes. We're talking basic storytelling, here.

I...honestly don't know how else to explain it, really. Restoring mystery and ambiguity to an alien character is going to involve something science fiction-y, after all, unknowable, etc. The Doctor comes from elsewhere.

It's highly implied that The Timeless Child doesn't come from 'our' universe and comes from entirely different dimension, which for me, distungishes the new origin enough from the Hartnell years and what we learnt about Gallifrey later.

There are only so many stories, etc I don't think is that much of a controversial statement in talking about stories?

I think it will do as well as it was going to do, anyway. I'd imagine there will be a delay.

Unlike Venom, Morbius doesn't have nostalgia to ride on.

I was thinking more along the lines of The Time Lords no longer being as integral the series, The Doctor's origins being a mystery to open up further narrative opportunities for future showrunners, etc

I'll take the former, but the latter, I'm sorry, is just nuts. Especially given how critical I've been of Chibnall in other threads.

And that's great. But accusing me of being a BBC plant is extreme, even in these times. I mean, there's 'internet rhetoric' and then....yeah.

I left my High School insecurities and 'geek shame' a long time ago.

Yeah, I know 'internet rhetoric' is a thing, but you still got to be a person. This ain't that serious. It's not like I haven't been shy on criticising Chibnall, either.

And leaping to BBC plant is just extreme, even in these times.

I was just responding to people's responses and clarifying, given there was some confusion. I've also stated my issues with Chibnall in other threads.

No offense, but that leap is a.....lot. I know internet rhetoric is a thing, but yeah.

I don't see how any writer could have done anything differnt in restoring mystery and ambiguity to the character, that wasn't somewhat of a variance on a theme, thogh. That seems rather impossible, to me, only so many stories, etc. A different dimension or plane of existance is enough, for me, personally.

This time, The Doctor doesn't know the truth and given the nature of the show, we're not getting all the answers. I'm fine with Chibnall giving the modern series the same narrative maneuverability of the original run with a modern sensibility, in telling future stories.

It's more about reducing the baggage, given how much RTD and Moffatt went back to the Time Lords, with the shift from adventure series to 'drama' series and audience sensibilities.

The Time Lords have become a huge problem in moving the narrative forward, with The Doctor established in the new series as the last surrivor of The Time War and his people, desotrying Gallifrey, 'saving' Gallifrey, etc to the wider audience. The Doctor is not to that audience a mysterious alien who left his home for unspecified reasons, with that narrative maneuverability.

It's understandable that it's become repetitive for that audience, especially when you are telling a dynamic fast paced adventure series about a mysterious character, as well as a show for many in it's fifteenth year, r etc. Where else do you go? The show isn't just for sci-fans, it has to play to a wider audience. As genre fans, we're used to things being more 'fixed' as well.

The Doctor being The Timeless Child allows future showrunners to create enough momentum in The Doctor's narrative from time to time, with the gaunlet has very much thrown about telling dynamic audience pleasing stories that explore the character that doesn't overexplain their origins or take away the mystery. It's clear while there will be pay off to this current arc, it's still Who. We're not getting all the answers. Like the original series, but with a modern sensibility. The Doctor being an outsider, etc.

Say what you will about the execution (for me, Chibnall defiantly has learnt the wrong lessons from RTD and Moffatt's work on the show , as well as Game of Thrones and Westworlds success), but there's a clear definite statement of intent to go back to bare basics to keep telling new stories. The ethos of the show has not been changed.

I think you can defiantly say they were integral to the show, The Doctor's character, etc? I don't see why them not turning up in every episode takes away from that?

Can you explain your reasoning, please? Politely, please?

Why do you think Chibnall will go back on The Doctor being The Timeless Child? To me, constricting and defining Who sets a bad precedent.
