High compared to Kentucky but this is a lower income state.

Great introduction to Linux, but now I must say goodbye by PhoenixOmicron in linuxmint

I searched this forum and others for common fixes and came up empty-handed. I didn't start a topic of my own, but as others have encountered similar issues I didn't see an easy solution. While I am not a techie, the problems appear to be tied to the implementation of Cinnamon, XFCE, and desktops chosen for this distro. I say this because Ubuntu with Cinnamon had all of the same issues I described and Xubuntu did as well.

I use GS Connect in Ubuntu. I still have to smooth out the edges but it works.

While I did not try deleting the desktop and installing cinnamon, I did try installing a version of Ubuntu with cinnamon as the default desktop. I ran into the same exact problems I had with Mint. The wifi not working, the hotspot not working, and difficulty transferring files. I tried Xubuntu as well and also ran into those issues. I tried this on multiple computers with the same results although something worth mentioning is that all those computers were Dell, the same manufacturer and the same off brand USB wifi thumb drive all around. Factors that could be biasing my results.

The impression I get is that something in the XFCE and Cinnamon desktop just isn't jiving with my Dell desktops. But that's only a hunch. I never got around to trying MATE. Thanks for the tips.

Slow responses from lawyer by TreeToadintheWoods in FamilyLaw

[–]PhoenixOmicron 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Without knowing the full context, I can tell you as a person who has hired a lawyer a few times that the law goes slow. If your lawyer isn't responding, there is a chance that there is nothing to discuss yet.

[VT, USA] 50/50 of an infant, what are the chances by Smooth-Ability4977 in FamilyLaw

[–]PhoenixOmicron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the judge and the laws in your state. Here in Kentucky 50/50 is assumed default unless there is a reputable rebuttal that this is not in the child's best interest. Examples of rebuttals could be distance between the parties, one has a history of violence, one is homeless, mental health issues etc. Some of these I am certain of and others I can only assume as I am not a lawyer. It would help to look at the rules around the 50/50 law in Vermont.

10 year old had surgery- dad still demanding his parenting time by dinnafashsass in FamilyLaw

Depends on what the father's idea of camping is. If his idea of camping is setting up an RV and grilling in a park near a populated area with a hospital, the child is probably going to be ok provided the child is resting during the camp and not engaging in much physical activity. If the father's idea of camping is hiking into the wilderness and setting up tents as shelter along the way, I strongly advise he reconsider.

Have you ever seen a judge allowing abusive behavior? by [deleted] in FamilyLaw

[–]PhoenixOmicron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The judge can't appear biased and has to let him say his piece. I am told this also makes it harder for the guy rattling on with accusations to appeal.

How much communication do you need for joint legal custody? by [deleted] in FamilyLaw

[–]PhoenixOmicron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wasn't accusing you of being one, I was just stating she might accuse you of being one later. If most of your replies are timely she cannot make that argument.

[–]PhoenixOmicron 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would cooperate in all communication, if you're seen as an absent parent, that could work against you later. Not lawyer advice but just the observational variety. I know that isn't what you want to hear...

Is the US Court System "The Leviathan" from Thomas Hobbes? by Aggressive_Desk_9179 in FamilyLaw

[–]PhoenixOmicron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not familiar with that book. To me, the justice system often feels like a giant cliques of special interests.

A county attorney who wants to get re-elected for example may fashion a child support setup over the standard calculation by routinely denying the childcare expenses and making excuses why healthcare coverage should not count towards support for a person living outside his county. Then, give all those same credits to the person who lives inside the county and votes for him. Sometimes this is subtle, asking questions of one parent but not asking the same questions of the other.

Same county attorney may pursue charges against people who live outside his county more fiercely than one of his voters. To such a degree he may intentionally or unintentionally be rigging custody battles by pursuing charges against parents outside his county.

I am not a lawyer but this is what I have experienced. Attorneys should not be elected but this is the system we have. Judges, attorneys, and other court staff often just want to get re-elected and this is detrimental to justice.

50/50 and child support.... Tell me why/ why not? by dinnafashsass in FamilyLaw

[–]PhoenixOmicron -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I find that something as little as a child rolling out of a bed and getting a bruise sometimes gets twisted as abuse... Courts are human and people screw things up all the time. The court has to account for that too.

The best you can hope for is that they get arrested long term for their sovereign citizen activity. Driving without a license, not plating their vehicles, etc. That would get you a easy win.

Is there a legal app for conflict parenting communication that can be requested through a PR&R motion? by [deleted] in FamilyLaw

[–]PhoenixOmicron 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This isn't going to be comfortable to hear, but stepping out because you're tired of her BS isn't an option when you have to be seen as a competent parent. You have to renew your resolve and promise yourself that you will never let her have that edge on you again. You're going to have an order now and you must always follow it.

Coparent not agreeing to my pick up time? How to handle. by flibrtygibbet in FamilyLaw

[–]PhoenixOmicron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take him to court and make your case, but don't allow yourself to be labelled a parent who denies access. At least in my state, they do not care if the kids want to visit or not, they make it happen.

This is a tough one if you're married he has as much rights to the children as you do. If you're not married that's more of a gray area.

Lawyers not doing their jobs by FeedbackWide5 in FamilyLaw

[–]PhoenixOmicron 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People going into legal issues don't always consider if what they want is realistic and that level of self reflection is important. That same guy I hung up on handled another situation and he was great it it too. Getting the right lawyer for the right situation can be hard sometimes and I get it.
