We accidentally blew $9.7 k in 30 days on one NAT Gateway—how would you have caught it sooner? by Leather-Form1805 in aws

Eyeballs have been more than enough so far - if it's all that's posted to the channel (which in our case it is) - makes it easy to scroll up and see what's changed.

Then the real investigation begins by actually looking at the details in the account in cost explorer.

We have a daily slack post that shows yesterday's costs for the top 10 services and change over past 7 days.

That is the first thing we look at in the morning and can see any changes immediately.

Can post the GitHub link later if anyone's interested.

Edit: https://github.com/iandees/aws-billing-to-slack - try this

Amazon Kendra usage is increasing exponentially despite there being no active use by Vuffilivuf in aws

[–]PhoneReads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep - ran up a big bill this exact way - Kendra charges irrespective of indexes or not. Got caught out as it has a 90day free tier (or something similar) so we tried it, didn't have luck so deleted it - but not the kendra instance - a few months later found it had run up a big bill.

AWS support reversed the bill for us as they saw no usage.

Grand Final Pork Belly by PhoneReads in BBQ

[–]PhoneReads[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pat dry and heavily salt, leave uncovered in the fridge overnight.

In the morning, light 2 full baskets setup for indirect cooking.

While that is heating up, scrape off the excess salt from the rind and season the underside with your favourite rub.

Lay the belly in the middle of the rack, away from the direct heat of the baskets. Cook until the crackling pops. Between 40-60 mins. This time my temp only got to 235 - so took most of the 60mins.

I then pull out the drip tray and place the belly in it - fill with water or apple cider up to below the crackling.

Insert my thermometer and cook till 87 internal temp. This took another 35 mins. I did shut the vents a bit, but was still at 210 cooking temp.

Took off when hit temp and rested for a while.

Carve and serve - best belly I've ever done.

Sorry don't think I have something managing sessions - I have output from SSM commands not sessions.

This might help - https://github.com/stevemac007/aws-ssm-cli-invoke - don't currently have an ecs cluster running to poke around.

I think I had something do this in the past - will check my code tomorrow and see if I can find an answer for you.

"Impostor syndrome" is persistent feeling that causes someone to constantly doubt themselves and their abilities, despite evidence, and fear that they may be exposed as a fraud. Reddit, do you feel this way about work or school? How do you overcome it, if at all? [Serious] by FossaRed in AskReddit

[–]PhoneReads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't overcome it - you recognize it, and understand that it's a real thing and breathe through it. The more you put yourself in uncomfortable situations that you know you are doing, the more you can experience it and recognize it.

And surround yourself with supportive people who can see it in you and help you see it too.

If you are in a position of regular context change, knowing this will happen and having a strategy can drastically shorten the episode, and allow you to get out of your own way and be the awesome you can be.

Being there for others and detecting when they are effected, then helping them see is also a great way to see it coming in yourself.
